08: The Magical Prowess Test (1)

Evelyn left her room, and her footsteps echoed through the empty corridor as she made her way towards the Grand Hall, also known as Rylinth Stadium, where the Magical Prowess Test was set to take place. The Grand Hall was located far from the main academy buildings and quarters, towards the second gate on the east side of the first humongous gate. The anticipation of the Magical Prowess Test hung in the air, and Evelyn's heart was beating with both excitement and nervousness.

Today, she woke up earlier than usual to practice her mana control and reconnect with her elemental powers. Her mother had only taught her and her brother the basics of mana control, fearing that she might teach them incorrectly if she were to teach them more. She had never used magic before herself. That's why she secured special admissions for them, so they could learn magic from the best academy in Humaldor.

Since she didn't know the specifics of the test, Evelyn focused on practicing her mana control when she woke up. With the amulet, she had high hopes of at least passing the test and achieving a high rank.

Walking nervously, she noticed that the academy was abuzz with activity. Students and parents alike hurried toward the Grand Hall, creating a bustling crowd. Evelyn marveled at the sheer number of people and wondered if the vast hall could accommodate them all.

Despite the mounting pressure in her chest, she maintained her pace, inhaling and exhaling, seeking solace in the rhythm of her breathing. Yet, she couldn't help but worry about the outcome of the test.

Recalling Griff's words about how the academy operated, she grew even more anxious. As she made her way through the crowd and left the main academy quarters, she finally caught sight of the expansive Grand Hall. The hall stretched out into the distance, seemingly endless, much like the sea of people that filled it. Evelyn couldn't help but wonder if even a single speck of powder would reach the ground if she were to throw it in the air.

'Won't it all fall on the heads of countless people?'

Her eyes strained to catch a glimpse of her brother amidst the bustling crowd, scanning the countless heads that filled the Grand Hall. The sea of students seemed infinite, and finding a single familiar face felt like searching for a needle in a haystack.

'If only we had a magical communication device or the telepathic abilities of the witches my mother spoke of,' she lamented, admitting defeat in her search among the throngs of people.

Giving up, she observed as the once-noisy field fell into silence. On an elevated platform, the headmaster emerged, commanding attention with his imposing presence. Though standing far away, Evelyn could feel his presence permeating the entire field, instilling a sense of quiet respect among the attendees.

"Greetings to all present today: parents, aspiring students, students, guests, and our esteemed staff members. Today marks another wonderful day where we get to witness the awakening of the magical potential in our younger generation. Today, we separate the sheep from the lions," resounded the headmaster's voice, reaching every corner of the academy. His ability to amplify his voice was truly impressive. Sure, that was just a mere glimpse of what a Lord is capable of.

"Failing this test, whether you were specially recruited or not yet admitted, means that you do not belong here. Keep that in mind, aspiring students. And let it be known, to any witches or demons who may be disguised as humans to gain entry to the academy, that we have methods in place to detect such malevolent beings. I won't prolong this speech, given the vast number of aspiring students present. Time is of the essence," announced the headmaster. His mention of witches and demons evoked a tinge of fear among the crowd.

"Now, all aspiring students should move to the designated area... Additionally, cheating will not be tolerated. Please refrain from bringing any artifacts, pills, crystals, cores, or weapons. We have surveillance in place, and any violation will result in instant disqualification," he pointed to his left, where teachers were waiting to assign students for the test. "You will be assigned to a teacher who will test you in groups. The tests are simple. Don't be nervous. Just show us what you've got," he concluded before leaving the stage, perhaps returning to his office to continue his paperwork.

Evelyn pushed through the crowd, heading towards the designated area for aspiring students. The final instruction hit her hard, shattering her hopes of achieving a high rank. She had foolishly relied too much on the amulet, neglecting to train her powers without its aid all this time. This was indeed a lesson she learned today. Relying on external factors or other people to achieve your goals may not always work out for you.

But what could she do? She had no idea what was restricting her from fully controlling her absorption and circulation of mana. She still doesn't understand why her mana core appears to be incomplete. It was all a mystery to her, but she is determined to unravel it as soon as possible.

She is afraid that if the amulet is detected and people find out about it, it will bring more trouble for her. Or maybe that was just what she thought. If she had known that the amulet had escaped the detection of Griff, a Master Mage, her thoughts might have been different. She would have cheated in front of these guys without fearing anything.

There was nowhere to hide it. She can't just give it to anyone here. If it remained with her, it would be detected and attract the troubles she despised. She felt stranded.

Uncertain of what to do, she noticed students placing their belongings in a small vault provided before entering the area for aspiring students.

Concerned about the safety of the amulet, she hesitated. 'What if the mage who is guarding the vault stole this eye-catching amulet from it?' She mused, plagued by doubts. Even if it remained untouched, there was no guarantee that she would complete her test before others, leaving her amulet vulnerable to the covetous hands of a fellow student.

Driven by her unwavering determination to protect her precious treasure, Evelyn swiftly turned around and ran back towards her dormitory, ignoring the confused gazes of those who saw her initially heading towards the aspiring student area. She didn't worry about missing the test because there were so many students taking it. She believed she would make it back in time to participate.

The academy was so vast that she kept running as far as she could until her legs wobbled and she felt her lungs burning from exhaustion. However, she was determined to keep the amulet safe, just as she had been instructed by the mysterious woman in her dream.

After running for a while, she stopped when she caught sight of the dormitory up ahead. Now the tiredness had gotten to her even more. She sat down to replenish her lost energy by absorbing mana from her surroundings before channeling her spiritual energy to her legs to enhance her running speed. She sprang up and ran towards her dormitory.

It seems that her mana control has greatly improved with the aid of the amulet. After realizing the disadvantage of relying too much on the amulet, she could only hope that luck would be on her side today so she could pass the test.

Evelyn arrived at her dormitory and headed straight to her room. As she reached for the doorknob, it unexpectedly swung open, narrowly missing her head.

"Unexpected indeed," she exclaimed, facing a graceful figure whose icy eyes sent chills down her spine. It was evident that this individual was an experienced ice elemental mage, unlike herself, a mere novice.
