Repentance Cliff was an independent peak, steep and about a thousand meters high.
Whenever a disciple made a mistake, the Sect Leader would punish the offender by sending them to face the wall at Repentance Cliff to reflect on their wrongdoings, for a short period of a few days, or as long as several years, depending mainly on the disciple's performance. A good attitude in admitting fault could shorten the punishment duration, while a bad attitude would extend it.
Of course, not all disciples were qualified to face the wall at Repentance Cliff, as one had to have a certain status and position, like an elite disciple or an elder. Ordinary disciples and Inner Sect Disciples had no right to ascend Repentance Cliff.
