MEANWHILE IN MAYSVILLE

Angie just put the phone down after speaking to you. It's clear to her that you want to end things with John but she can't help feel that you might break John in the meantime. She understands that you can't keep a relationship alive with you being who knows where. She takes a deep breath and then goes and share the news with your mom. Your mom immediately understand.

"I knew she was going to do it. She just waited for him to have some distance from her. I knew her heart wasn't in the relationship anymore but it was with the Navy Seals. It will be better for him to move on"

"But how do I break the news to him, mom? You know he'll be devastated"

"I know honey but the sooner you let him know, the sooner he can move on with his life"

"Yeah, I know but it will be hard to see him like that"

"I know, honey. Why don't you go and see if you can't break it to him softly?"

"Okay, please tell dad-"

"It's okay, go, I'll tell him"

"Thanks, mom"

Angie gets in her truck and goes straight to his house. She stops in the driveway and John walks out the door. They hug each other.

"How are you doing, baby?" He smiles at her.

"I'm doing so much better than I did yesterday with feeling all guilty and stuff"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean she finally did it"

"Did what? Who?"

"Kim…she finally called to break up with you"

He staggers backward and releases her hands he once held so fondly. She moves closer to embrace him but he walks further back.

"What's wrong baby? Isn't this what we've wanted for as long as we could remember?"

"Yeah, yeah it is but you know, she broke up with me"

"I know but didn't you always say that you wanted her to break up with you and when that happens we can be together without hiding away anymore?"

"Yeah, I said that, didn't I? This is what we've been waiting for?"

John then proceeds to pull Angie closer to him and they kiss each other like they've done so many times before but this time it's different, it's much more intense and almost final. They kiss like there won't be another kiss again.

"Baby, you are okay with all of this, right?" She caresses his cheek, taking off his hat and wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Of course I am baby, this is what I wanted for five years now" He pulls her in for another passionate kiss then he hugs her saying "Do you think she's got someone other there?"

Angie pulls back to look into his eyes. "What do you mean?"

"Nothing, just wondering if you think she'll be okay over there?"

"Yeah, I'm sure she'll be fine. After all, she's the one that broke up with you, not the other way around. Speaking of which, you're going to have to look completely devastated after losing your girlfriend of ten years when you're around town"

"Of course, yeah…yeah I'll look miserable"

John can't describe the feeling that he's feeling at the moment. He's supposed to feel relieved and happy to now move on with Angie but for some reason, he can't get over the fact that he won't see you anymore or that you wouldn't be the one longing for him anymore. He feels empty but also satisfied at the same time. When he thinks of another man in your life, anger fills his being.

He finds that his heart is bleeding for you.

BACK AT THE BASE

KIM'S POINT OF VIEW

Nick turns around and walks toward his bed and you walk behind him, following him. You walk in silence because both of you know what you're about to do. The tension is so thick in the air that you won't be surprised if the other patients can't feel it too. Suddenly Nick's leg gives in and you jump just in time under his arm where he could grab on to you.

"You okay?"

"Ahh…I'm so sorry…dammit"

"What are you sorry about? Why do you keep on apologizing if something happens to you?"

"I don't do that"

"Yes you do, Nick. Let's get you into bed. Please tell me how's your pain?"

"I'm okay really"

"Nick, this isn't some game or a brave moment for you. This could be you losing your leg. Please tell me how severe is your pain? Ten being really bad?"

"Uhm…a five I guess" You lift his leg on the bed and you see him wince.

"Nick, I've known you for a little while now and you never show pain. You just wince, are you sure you're pain aren't more like an eight?"

He coughs to the side and you see him struggling to show you his pain. "Yeah, okay…probably more like an eight"

You move close to him and say "Nick, I promise to keep your pain between us. I won't share it with anyone. You're secret is safe with me"

You wink and smile at him. He smiles and knows that you're only teasing him for not telling you in how much pain he actually are in. You walk away and quickly adjust the morphine dosage.

"This should help you feel much better and give you a good nights rest too"

"Thank you, Kim, you always look after me…I just want you to know…"

You watch as his eyes fall close. It must be the morphine that's kicking in. He must've been in a lot of pain.

"….I want you to know…I…I…like you so…"

You smile as you see him drift off into dreamland. It's better this way, otherwise, you might have done something you'll regret and the voice of reason would be very disappointed. You cover him with a blanket and stare for a little while. You look around you to make sure no one sees you and you kiss him on his cheek and whisper.

"Me too, Nick. Me too"

His eyes flutter in response and you turn away falling on your bed.

(It's better this way, Kim. You better get some sleep. You have a big day waiting for you tomorrow)

You turn around and fall asleep with a smile on your face.

NICK'S POINT OF VIEW

He wakes up just as the sun peaks its head out and sees you laying next to him. He feels confused as he remembered that you were walking back and he was ready to step over the line with you and now he's waking up in the morning light. He remembers that he felt something so soft like a snowflake falling on his cheek just before he finally drifted off to sleep.

(What happened? Was I going to finally break my bond with Helena and create a new one with Kim last night? Am I then turning into my father? Breaking every girl's heart, like he did my mother so many times before? I can't be that man, I just can't. I won't be him)

He stands up and walks to Helena's bed. The pain in his leg isn't so severe as it was yesterday and that morphine you gave him, really did the trick. He stops at the curtain that separates the ICU part of the tent. Then he sees Helena laying there lifeless. He's heart feels like breaking, not for seeing her laying there but by the mere fact that he would've crossed the line with you yesterday while she's in here fighting for her life. He walks over to her side and holds her hand.

"I'm so sorry, Helena…I'm so very sorry"

Suddenly the machine next to her starts to light up and a long beeping sound screams from the machine. Tracy comes running up to her.

"Shit! Get Dr. McPherson! Code blue! Code blue!"
