A Jealous Heart Cinder’s All

Senya's POV:

Ever since we left the hotel to search for the missing person, something had been bothering my demonic senses. A flurry of emotions was shooting out of my vampiric aid, and yet she displayed no visible signs of them on her face. As cold as steel as we strode along the forest path–she remained unbothered with no guard against malevolent monsters potentially lurking around us.

"Why are you carrying an umbrella?" Trying to pry into her thoughts, I probed into an inconspicuous topic.

"Vampire, sun, do you need me to put two and two together?" She replied in her usual condescending voice.

Keeping hush for a few seconds, I kept my eyes on her from the side as we ventured deeper into the forest. As a streak of blood trailed into my nose, however, I broke the silence once more.

"Do you smell that?" I asked, locking my eyes on her to capture any changes in her expression.

"Smell what?" She replied, but this time I knew she was lying.

'A vampire that can't smell blood? Something's wrong with this idiot.' As far as I knew vampires were partial undead incapable of catching a cold or any other diseases, so either she was lying or this was one hell of a sickness to affect a vampire's nose. 'Should I call her out though? There's no doubt something's wrong, but what if she turns violent?'

Capable as I was, there was absolutely no way I could restrain her if the situation called for it. Not only was she older, which translated to more experience and power as a monster, but she also had those gnarly fangs capable of tearing even the toughest dragon hide.

"Follow me then," deciding against testing my luck, I started leading Rin in the direction of the foul odor.

Before long we arrived at a trail of blood that stretched inside a terribly abhorrent-smelling cave. At first, I wanted to go back to the hotel to get Ken and the others with us before venturing in, but then watching Rin making her way inside on her own, I figured it was best to follow her lead for now instead.

'She'd been following me so far, so what came over her to take the lead all of a sudden?' As my mind struggled to find an answer, my shoes were caught in a thick gooey liquid. Looking down at the ground, my senses were heightened at the sight of partially dried blood.

"Blood…" I muttered unintentionally.

"There's more blood deeper inside, but–" her eyes glaring at something in the corner, she beckoned me closer for me to get a better look. "I think we found who we were looking for."

Following her gaze, I found who we were looking for. Misses Marloon, gutted and skinned in a dark corner of the cave. Her shifty eyes as well as loose skin, suggested a skin-crawler's involvement in her death.

"You seem calmer than I thought you'd be after seeing a dead body." Perhaps noticing my indifference, Rin stared at me from the edge of her eyes. Carrying a hint of musing, her words seemed to be an instrument to trap me in some verbal trap.

"I've seen my fair share of the dead in hell," brushing past the topic, I began moving closer to the dead body. "And sure, I was somewhat more shocked when Ophelia attacked us, but that was different."

"Why?" She asked, her voice growing ever so commanding with every word.

Squatting by the dead body, I poked around on the corpse's dead skin before giving Rin an answer.

"How long are we going to keep playing this game?" Having had enough of this pretense, I wanted some answers. "Just tell me why you killed her."

Her hand folded with the umbrella still looming above her head, Rin kept glaring at me as though still expecting me to answer her question first. Our eyes remained locked in a stalemate for a few seconds until I blurted an answer for her first.

"Because I like him, that's why it was different. The others look at me like I'm a feral monster who would devour them, yet they somehow have the courage to insult me, humiliate me, even bark threats in my face," the last day with the guests arriving was more than enough for me to be reminded why I hated humans just as much as they hated me.

Lost in my thought for a moment, I was pulled right out by Rin's approaching steps echoing through the cave. Looking back up, I noticed her hand extended towards me to help me get up. For a spell, I wondered if this was yet another trick of her, but deciding against my better judgment I took her help and stood up.

"Fine, I did kill her but she deserved it," Rin hissed with deep contempt for the woman.

"And why is that exactly?" I asked, but her squinting brows suggested that I dare not question her judgment.

"So, what happens the next time someone crosses a line that you don't want them to?" Pointing to the corpse, I tried pushing her further for an answer. "Which one of us would you kill first? Me for knowing what you've done or someone else?"

"She tried to take him from me, I share a soul with him, damn it!" Her fury grew over my agitation.

"You share a what?" Hearing about it for the first time, I had no clue what she meant. "A soul, as in your soul? How did you even–"

"You're not the only one who deals in soul, demon. My mistress had plenty of your kind groveling at her feet for something or the other!" Having grown into insults, I knew this was as far as I could push her. "Besides, I learned a few things from them here and I'll show you exactly what if you keep pushing me!"

"Fine, I don't care enough for this woman to risk my own hide," judging by her tone, any word of rebuttal could possibly lead to another pile of bodies being added to this cave. "But before we leave, I want you to tell me why you did this, and make a soul pact to never lay a finger on any of us."

Although I was an imp, the lowest kind of demon, the fact remained that I could bind anyone's soul so long as I had something to offer in return. For now, that thing was my discretion, and in return, she'll hand me her soul dare she break the terms of our pact.

"So?" Holding my hand upside down, an infernal pact appeared in my hand. Soaked in the blood of the tortured, it reeked of the lowest scum of the scum. "Bind me, and you'll have your silence."

Keeping her eyes locked on me for a while, it was clear that she was contemplating her choices. But at last, taking the pack from my hand she went with the more sensible one.

"What do you plan to tell Ken and the others by the way?" I asked while she skimmed through the lines of our soul pact.

"The skin-crawlers got her before we arrived," she answered, her razor glance peering back up at me from over the parchment.

Nodding in response, I waited for her to read the pact thoroughly and sign it soon after.
