A step further
The night was dark and silent, except for the occasional sound of gunshots, momentary painful cries and sirens. The Russo crime family had been under attack for close to an hour by the combined forced of a the Martinez cartel and the NYPD, and they had lost many of their men and territory. They were desperate for a way out, or a way to fight back.
That's when the Underworld leader came to them. He was a mysterious figure, who is rumored to have access to a source of power beyond their imagination. If one thought about the events of the night carefully they may be able to realize that his timing was far to impeccable but they were desperate, wounded and angry.
Those are the emotions he has been banking on for a while now and it seemed to have worked.
