Mr Norris has an idea

"Look, my girl, I didn't mean to upset you," Mr Norris began. "Perhaps, I was too harsh on you."

"No, grandad, you were right." Steph said, wiping away the tears. "A boy said something like that today after I accidentally tried to poison his cat-"

"His cat?" He asked.

"—that trying to help someone that doesn't need it will do more harm than good." Steph quickly continued. "Recently, I've tried to help a lot of people – I encouraged the student council president to make changes to the school that she had been afraid to make before, I tried to make friends with a girl that didn't have any, and I tried to help a girl that was being bullied."

Mr Norris wondered what could have gone wrong, as Steph paused for breath.

"But it all went wrong, grandad." Steph said. "The student council is falling apart because the girl I tried to make friends didn't want to make friends and she turned out to be the vice president, and she left the council because of me and the girl who was getting bullied had a crush on the ex-vice, and they were caught kissing by the ex-vice's girlfriend's childhood friend."

"Good lord." Exclaimed Mr Norris. "What an unfortunate girl our ex-vice is."

"But it gets worse, later she saw her girlfriend and her childhood friend kissing." Steph added and began to cry again. "She hates me now. I don't know what to do."

"Well, you could apologize to her for a start." Said Mr Norris. "You tried to solve too many problems at once. Take care of one problem at a time – these are human beings you're dealing with – starting with the ex-vice. She needs you the most, and it sounds like she would be a useful addition to your cause."

"But she's not very good at talking to people, grandad."

"So, who says you need to talk." Mr Norris led Steph over to a small cupboard, slid it open, and moved aside some tins. "It's a bit old, but it should still work."

"Do you think that she will like it, grandad?" said Steph, bouncing with excitement.

"Well, we can always think of something else if she doesn't."
