My Life As The First S-Class Guide

Nine years ago, humankind almost perished the day monsters came out of the Cracks– aka dungeons– that appeared all over the world. When all hope seemed to be lost, a select few awakened as Hunters equipped with a System. Thanks to them, the civilization recovered faster than one would expect after the apocalypse. However, another conflict presented itself later: the more the Hunters used their powers, the quicker they lost their sanity. Fortunately, among the Awakened People, there is a group classified by the System as Guides– and only these Guides have the power to soothe the Hunters and bring them back to their senses. Sounds great, right? But what happens when a Civilian is in a relationship with a Hunter who has a high matching rate with their Guide? “Let’s break up, Wonhee.” Yep, this is what happens when your Hunter boyfriend has a 76% matching rate with his Guide. Wonhee was dumped by her long-time boyfriend because she’s just a Civilian… … or so she thought.

VILLAIN ORIGIN STORY

"IF YOU don't surrender Chu Wonhee to the government, then we'll have no choice but to declare the two of you as state enemies," Kwon Jiwoong warned Yeon Soobin and Jang Semi. "According to President Ma's orders, if you still refuse to cooperate, then the government will declare you as state enemies."

The 'President Ma' that he mentioned would be President Ma Yong-deuk– South Korea's president.

[It's just a shame that the president is currently in the US at the moment.]

Fortunately, President Ma lent Blue Palace to Jiwoong. He was currently using it as a temporary headquarters.

Hence, he had the authority to detain Yeon Soobin and Jang Semi at the Blue Palace.

"Then go ahead and do that," Yeon Soobin said casually. "Can this country afford to turn us into enemies?"

Jiwoong's jaw clenched. "Can you hear yourselves? It's President Ma's orders!"

"We will only cooperate with you once we get the assurance that what happened to our baby sister will be thoroughly investigated," Jang Semi said. "If the government is planning to hide this under the rug, then let's just fight."

[These bastards…]

"Hwang Frost has gone berserk, so the government's priority is to stop and restrain him," Jiwoong said, frustrated. "Once Hwang Frost is calm, then we can start with the investigation. But Hunter Graham, the only Hunter who can fight Hwang Frost at the moment, is having a hard time dealing with Hwang Frost on his own. Other capable fighters like Hunter Moonho and Hunter Seodam are still inside a dungeon, so we don't really have anyone else to ask for help."

"So what?" Yeon Soobin asked. "That's not our problem."

Jiwoong slammed his hands on the table. "Every Awakened Person in the country took an oath to protect the country and the people! Both of you are S-Class Hunters, so you have more responsibilities towards our nation!"

"Then you shouldn't have touched our baby sister," Jang Semi said, her eyes glowing. "Hand over the bastards behind the Forced Awakening drugs, then we'll talk."

"Do you not read the news?" Jiwoong yelled, the veins on his neck almost popping out. "Just so you know, our own people are calling you traitors for refusing to cooperate with the government!"

"Then should we just leave Korea and become real traitors?" Yeon Soobin asked smugly. "Kwon Jiwoong, I'm sure you know any country would welcome both Semi Noona and me with open arms because of our unique abilities."

Jiwoong knew that, so he couldn't really say anything.

[Our small country will be swallowed by other powerful countries if we lose Yeon Soobin and Jang Semi at the same time…]

"President Kwon, please pardon my intrusion."

Kwon Mina, Jiwoong's cousin and personal secretary, entered the conference room and whispered.

It was bad news, of course.

"What?!" Jiwoong asked, surprised. "Hwang Frost said he'll freeze the remaining half of Seoul tonight if we don't bring Chu Wonhee to him? And he'll freeze people to death, too?!"

"Yes, President Kwon," Mina said. "Hunter Graham lost to Hwang Frost-nim again."

Tsk.

[Graham is already our last trump card…]

"President Kwon."

This time, it was Hunter Sung– Jiwoong's driver-slash-bodyguard– who entered the room and gave a report to him.

"What is it?"

"Miss Chu Wonhee is here, President Kwon."

Jiwoong was about to say something when, suddenly, Yeon Soobin and Jang Semi stood up with a shocked look on their faces.

Ah.

[They also didn't expect their sister to come here.]

WONHEE snuck out of her brother's mansion using the door that only members of the Yeon Family knew.

Ahyeon left the mansion using the main door since she couldn't share the family's secret door with him. But her bodyguard waited for her with a car. When the Hunters guarding the mansion noticed that they were running away, it was too late.

And now Wonhee had finally arrived at the Blue Palace where her siblings were.

Fortunately, the Hunters guarding the Blue Palace politely escorted her inside.

[Here I am now.]

"Hee-ya!"

Wonhee smiled when the door of the drawing room where she was burst open, then Soobin and Semi entered the room while running towards her. "Oppa, Unnie."

"Hee-ya, why did you come here?" Soobin scolded her. "I asked my guards to keep an eye on you, so how…?"

"I used the secret door that only our family knows about, Oppa," Wonhee confessed. "So please don't scold your guards. I escaped because I knew they wouldn't let me leave the house, but I know I should be here."

Semi gave Ahyeon a scolding look, causing Wonhee's bodyguard to lower her gaze.

"Unnie, Ahyeon told me what's going on because I asked," Wonhee said, defending her friend and bodyguard. "Please don't scold him for doing his job."

Semi let out a sigh before facing Wonhee, scowling. "Hee-ya, if you know what's happening, then why did you come here? We won't hand you to Hwang Frost. He's dangerous."

Wonhee was about to tell her sister her plan when, suddenly, the door burst open again.

This time, Kwon Jiwoong entered with his pretty secretary and the Hunter-slash-bodyguard that brought Wonhee and Ahyeon to the drawing room earlier.

[The minor villain is here.]

"Miss Chu, I'm glad you're here," Kwon Jiwoong, the APA President, said as if he was relieved to see her. "I'm sure you already know, but Hwang Frost is on berserk and we need you to appease him."

"Then why are you standing on your feet, President Kwon?" Wonhee said, smiling "sweetly" at the APA President. "Shouldn't you be on your knees while begging me?"

Kwon Jiwoong and his cohorts looked shocked by what she said.

Soobin and Semi, who genuinely believed that their baby sister was the sweetest and the most kind-hearted person in the entire world, were especially shocked.

But Wonhee didn't change her attitude.

[I already made up my mind before I came here.]

"President Kwon, you haven't forgotten that I almost died when APA arrested me unjustly, have you?" Wonhee said, putting her hands on her back while tilting her head to one side. "You almost killed me, and yet I haven't received a single apology from you."

President Kwon's face hardened. "An apology would be sent if the investigation concludes that APA did make a mistake when handling your drug case, Miss Chu."

"Now that I'm awake, why don't you begin the investigation?"

"That can wait," the APA President insisted. "The entire country is on high alert because of Hwang Frost's berserk mode. You've awakened, Miss Chu. Granted that you haven't officially registered as an Awakened Person yet, it doesn't change the fact that you have a duty to fulfill for this country."

Ah, so the APA President resorted to threat when cornered.

[Well, I can do the same.]

"Oppa, Unnie, if I say I don't wish to cooperate with the association that almost killed me, will you scold me?"

"Of course not," Soobin said, patting her head gently. "We will protect you, even if it means betraying the country."

Semi wrapped an arm around Wonhee's shoulders. "Don't worry about it, Hee-ya. Just do what you want to do."

Wonhee then looked at President Kwon with a smug smile on her face.

[See?]

"The fact that you showed up here means you're open for negotiations," Kwon Jiwoong said, his jaw clenched. "What do you want, Miss Chu?"

"Three things," Wonhee said confidently. "I will bring Hwang Yejun back to his senses if you give me three things in return."

It was the moment Wonhee decided to say goodbye to her "nice girl" persona.

[This is my villain origin story.]

sola_cola's thoughts on this chapter: I'm telling you, Chu Wonhee's revenge would be as refreshing as drinking cider (this is a Korean slang which means feeling refreshed after reading something frustrating).
