"Well, now they'll have a chance to pay for that," Vol said. "I wonder whether it was Beth or Swallow that dealt the blow? Either way, both shall fall. You," he said, pointing at Penelope. "You stay glued to me now. I don't need Nolan taking advantage of you for a battle plan."

"Okay," Penelope said, her fists clenched in some sort of resolve. Vol noticed that, and commented on it.

"I thought you hated seeing people die."

"I do," Penelope said. "But I think now, I'd hate it more if you were to die."

He snorted at the childish logic, and glanced at Harland, seeing if he shared his amusement. Apparently, the man didn't. He had a forlorn look on his face – he seemed touched, more than anything.

"Damn it. Move, the both of you, you're wasting my battle high," Vol said.
