I was holding her for a few seconds, but I couldn't touch her the way Crash's voice does in a heartbeat. When she froze, I went still. We stayed in that awkward position for several seconds while Crash introduced a song. She couldn't take her eyes off him. Eventually, I didn't even need her to say it. I started pulling away because it was so obvious she was still in love with him. I couldn't believe I'd ever even considered that it might be any other way.

By the end of the song—the new song he's never played publicly, that he wrote for her, that she's never heard, but that she knows is for her…the tears have made tracks down Kelly's cheeks, and she's got her face in her hands.
