It took some time to wake her mother up. She was a heavy sleeper, and since the day he came home the following day. She promised herself not to care about anything. So earlier on when her husband told her that he had some business errand to run. She didn't call to ask him when he will be back, whether to be included on supper or not.
Since her husband is an old grown up man. She knows that he clearly know what is wrong and what is right. When she had someone knocking on the door she didn't care to wake up and open because she hand left the door open for him. She didn't want him to disturb her sleep.
The persistent knock on the door made her realise that maybe he was not the one knocking. She was still half sleep when she woke up. Her voice made her to wake up fully " Mother you need to wake up, dad has passed out"
She pulled the door open as she run past her daughter downstairs out to the house. When she reached outside she didn't like what she saw. Mrs Mukhongo wished that she didn't waste her time to come outside.
Mr Mukhongo was lying on the ground as he had puked to himself all over his shirt. Strong of foul smell of whiskey was lingering in the air around him. She closed her nose and mouth with the palm of her hand. Mrs Mukhongo was a devoted Christian and a teetotaller. 'So these was the errands you toldd me about, you have started being dishonest with me' she thought.
"Mother we need to bring him to the house and perhaps call the doctor, who knows it might be alcohol poisoning" she said as she leaned down ready to help her dad stand."
"He had too much of drinking Mish he will be okay after a good cold shower" she said. She didn't want to look directly into her daughter's eyes. She looked sideways as she sniffed to avoid the tears from falling down. She remembered when Mr Mukhongo promised her never to drink,he wanted to be a devoted Christian just like her. She was very happy when he had told her that. Here he is braking the promise.
'Since that board of members meeting, you uprabtly changed. You always come home drunk, no spark of love in your eyes. Always avoiding conversation with me. Late night talk, what is happening'
Her head was full of different thoughts, thoughts she didn't understand what just happened in her marriage in a blink of an eye. She leaned down and helped Mish in lifting him up.
Since he was drunk beyond realization and already passed out, he was as good as a sack of maize all weight was upon them, the two fragile women. They struggled lifting him until they reached the bathroom. They opted to use the bathroom on downstairs they didn't have energy left to bring him upstairs in their bedroom.
Mish helped her mother and sat him down . She left the bathroom leaving her parents in the bathroom. Mrs Mukhongo undressed her husband after making his back lean on the wall she opened the shower with the cold water.
She closed the door and left him inside, if not for the love she had for him, she could have left him in the shower for the rest of the night. Her love surpassed the hatred. After five minutes she opened the shower and saw him trying to wipe away the cold water that was running in his face. So the magic worked he was sombre after the cold shower.
