There was a long stretch of silence.

Alora was an obstetrician and she was used to women finding themselves rather unexpectedly pregnant.

It seemed today, though that it was the doctor who was more surprised.

She was.

Kylie had spent the past five weeks fighting the idea and then getting used it it. A private person, she revealed only when she was ready.

And tonight she was.

'How long have you known?' Alora asked.

'A couple of weeks after the twins were Christened,' Kylie said. 'I tried to put it out of mind, what with my exams and everything. I decided to work out how I felt when I was leave.'

'And how do you feel?' Alora asked, struggling to put back on her obstetrician's hat.

'Well, I'm going to be terrified until I have tests and get all the results back...'

'The chances of it happening again are minimal,' Alora said.

'I know they are.'

'But you shan't relax till they're in.' Alora smiled gently and kylie nodded. 'Apart from that, how do you feel?'

'I still don't know,' Kylie admitted. 'I don't know if I'm happy or worried or anything really.'

'You know that I'm here for you, whatever you decide.'

'I do and even if I haven't been ready to speak about it till now, it helped a lot to know that.'

Alora opened the champagne.

For herself.

She didn't even bother with a glass!

'What about ? How did it take it?'

'it isn't his.'

'Then who—

'I don't want to discuss that.'

'Now, hold on a minute,' Alora said. 'You're not my patient yet—you're my friend so we are going to discuss that. 'What happened in Spain?

'How do you know that it was in Spain?'

'Because you've been different since then, and also you don't top up your tan by sitting in a hotel room.'

'Yes it was then,' Kylie admitted. 'I met someone but it was never going to be going anywhere. it was supposed to be a bit of fun, a weekend of no consequence...' She gave a wry smile. 'We were careful...'

'You have no idea how many times I hear that in a day,' Alora said.

'We used condoms,'

'Note the plural,' Alora said. 'Was it a sex-fest, then?'

'I guess.'

'You dirty girl.'

'Okay, I can tell you what happened now.' She told Alora about the hair appointment that hadn't happened and the missing luggage. "I ended up wearing your dress for the presentation,' Kylie explained. "I felt like a person out of a cave breathing fresh air at first but then I started to enjoy myself. I felt a bit like my old self. Anyway, he made it very clear from the start that he was only interested in the weekend and nothing more...' Kylie thought the time she met him and thought about the moment when he asked her to stay a little longer and was being nice to her. But she shoved that aside. It didn't matter now, it was all in the past and she has to forget about it. "At first, I was going to tell him to get lost, he's not my usual type after all, but then...' She shrugged. "I decided that a weekend of no strings attached was better. At least, it was better than those six months of being all hopeful and then slowly finding out that the relationship wasn't working, not met for each other and realising that you made a big stupid mistake.'

"And, was it?'

"For a while,' Kylie said.

"So, what's his name?'

"Ken,' she replied.

"And, have you told him about the baby?' Alora asked.

"No need for that. He's married.' Kylie made herself say it. They stood in the spare room that will soon be a nursery in silence. it was Kylie who broke it. "I'm sorry, Alora...'

"You don't have to apologise to me,' Alora said. "After all, it wasn't your ex or my husband you slept with.'

"I know, but even so. fuck this.' There were tears welling up in Kylie's eyes. She still couldn't quite believe how careless she'd been. "I didn't know that he was married right until the end...the motherfucker had taken off his ring and tucked it in his wallet. I was such an idiot. I probably didn't even ask enough questions,' she admitted. "He seemed very direct and honest to me. He didn't seem like the sort of person who would cheat, which says a lot about my gauge for guys...

"Well, whether he's married or not,' Alora said, and Kylie knew that her friend's doctor's hat was firmly on now, which meant she was talking to her as a doctor. "He still have every right to know and it's his responsibility towards the baby...'

Kylie shook her head and wiped away her tears. "He doesn't need to know, it's my baby and I will raise it with my sweat and hands. This baby is my own flesh and blood and I will not give it to anyone. And, it might be a little bit late to be thinking of it but I'm not tearing a family apart. I'm not doing or going to contact him. Besides I don't even know his surname, I don't even know where he works, everything he told me, could have been a lie...'

"Come off it, Kylie.'

"Okay, I looked the conference attendees and I do know his surname but I can manage. He doesn't need to...'

"It's actually not about you and whether or not you can manage,' Alora said. "And, it's not about his wife and how she will react. it's about his baby, Kylie.' Alora was as firm as Kylie had known she would be. The very questions that she had been wrestling with for weeks were now being voiced out by her friend. "It's about your baby, who will grow up and will want to know, and has a right to know, who his or her father is. Whether or not you want him to be, he has a right to be involved, or not, in his baby's life.'

"So, what the fuck are you trying to say now,' she asked.

"Don't pretend, Kylie. You know, what I'm talking about,' Alora stated and sighed.

"I fucking know all of that,' Kylie said. I don't ever want him to know, he doesn't deserve to know, he is nothing but a bastard. I'm twelve weeks pregnant now. I'm doing my very best to simply get used to that fact. I'm not going to upend his life while I'm still in my first trimester...'

"Oh, you will upend yours. Why the hell should he get away with a few weeks of stress...'

"I'm not stressed,' Kylie said.
