The Weird Call

It was a busy day at Runa hospital and there were so many specimens to be processed, Balley would normally help me if the work was bulky, but this time it seemed that everyone were on their toes.

'Hey, I saw Jacy on the hallway' Balley says, as he goes out of the lab.

'Okay, thanks for the info.' Back at London, we had placed a prank call on Jacy, asking for her whereabouts, she told us she went on a trip with her family and that she had left a hand written note in the lab for me. Balley was surprised that she preferred to leave a hand written note, rather than place a call directly. Wth this, we set out a plan to find Jacy's room. When we found it, she was shocked to see us at the door, almost banging the door back at us, I then told her that I didn't need her anymore at the lab in Freeda. To my surprise, Jacy did not notice I and Balley all the while, maybe she was so focused on Doc Mac. I made a report to GECA, that I did not need her anymore, but they could not just let her go like that, instead, she was given a one month ultimatum on an agreement that she had to be in her best behavior. Any bad report from me after that, and she was out of the lab, not just that, but GECA project as a whole. Jacy was in her best behavior because she knew I was not going to take it for granted, but I knew sooner or later that she would flop, it was just a matter of time.

I heard footsteps from the hallway and coming ahead was Jacy, she walked into the room with some documents. Finally she had started getting serious. I had told her to bring some documents from the lab at Freeda and to my surprise, she was punctual this time.

'Good day doctor Williams,' she said, as she came into my office.

'Hey Jacy, are the documents complete?' I asked, flipping through the skimpy jackets of the documents.

'they're complete and..... please I want to say I'm sorry'

'Sorry for what?' I asked, waiting to hear what next she would say.

'For my slip ups and my lies. I.. I... promise to do better' she said with watery eyes. Jacy was a drama queen, but somehow she knew I was not going to fall for this one and that this was the last straw, there was no room for more slip ups.

'Yea I know, but this time be careful, cause I'm not gonna spare.' I said as I looked away, trying so hard to be engrossed in what I was doing. I knew if I looked at her, I may give in to her sorry looking face that she always put up anytime she wanted to be pitied. I had spared Jacy's inconsistencies for long and I wasn't ready to do it again. To sum it all up, this time Doc Mac was involved, it made her situation worse. The thought of them together always made cold shivers run down my spine, I never would have thought.

'Okay then, I'll see you back at the lab'

'Okay.' she said, as she left the office. After few minutes, I heard the land line ring, it was coming from the hospital's medical director, Doc Mac. I wondered why he called me, he had never for once contacted me through the landline. Maybe it was because I wasn't with my phone, maybe he tried calling and even if he did, he never used the landline to call me.

'Doc Mac is looking for you bro' Balley said, as he entered into the office.

'Did he tell you anything?' I asked.

'No he didn't'

'Okay.' I said, as I walked out the door, with questions running through my mind, it was kind of out of the normal, cause he always came around to give instructions and to see how things were running. I wondered what brought the new development. I entered into his office to see him with a cup of tea in his hand.

'Come on in, sit down' He said, motioning with open palms. I had never really seen his office this way, it almost looked so relaxing, like a bedroom or something, with soft looking recliners and a mini table in front.

'I know you may be wondering why I called you here' He said, looking directly into my eyes. There was silence for some seconds there, then he spoke up.

'You were at the conference at London right?' he asked, looking blue eyed. At this moment I realized he just wanted to get information out of me. Normally Doc Mac won't look so calm, it was all just a facade.

'Did you notice that I was there?' he asked. 'What?' I asked, raising my brows. I couldn't really tell if I was thinking of what to say or I was surprised at his question, but at that instant, I knew that there was no way I could give him the information he was looking for.

'Did you see me at the conference?' He asked in a louder tone. 'No, not really..... I don't know, were you there?' I said, as I looked at him intensely. At this point, he looked as if he had a great heave of relief, he looked more calm. 'Is there any problem?' I asked, as I adjusted my chair a bit from where I sat. 'No, there's no problem. I just wanted to know, cause I was there too'

'That's nice to know, I didn't know you were interested in GECA, it was a nice trip though'

'Yea, it was. 'He said, as he stood up from where he sat and walking to a shelf near the window. He looked calmer, but uneasy, as if he was itching to say something.

'So I heard you are having issues with your assistant at the lab' he said, glancing at me from the side. I knew it, I smelt a rat somewhere and I definitely knew where it was coming from. Doc Mac was never nice to me, he never talked to me this calmly and I would never step into his office to sit down. He wanted answers and I was not ready to give it to him. 'Yea something like that, we have our personal issues back at the lab, but it's nothing we can't handle'

'Okay, if you say so.' He said as he sat back down, fumbling for his pen cover as he stared down his desk. He looked like he was not satisfied with the answers I gave him. After a while of silence, he told me to go.
