Night approached the world as she stared out her window at the road leading to her house. Her eyes had a longing in them, hoping he would show up. She had been waiting since she got back. She was eager, her father Gilbert Royce, however, was not. He had heard from the locals what transpired in the town. He was furious. 'A man dared to attempt to court his daughter? Ha! Let's see who has the fucking guts!'
Finally, a figure showed itself in the middle of the road, like a shadow. Slowly, it approached the house, with a steady but strong pace. The person reached the front door and knocked.
Gilbert grabbed the handle to the door in a rage, full of killing intent, he wanted to skin the bastard who was after his daughter alive. Right before he opened the door, a pressure pressed down on his body. It felt like the sky was falling down on him. He was scared shitless, then he noticed his daughter running downstairs, and tried to warn her that there might be an assassin nearby, but then the pressure faded as fast as it came. He flung the door open to reveal a man who appeared to be in his early twenties with a handsome and playful face. However, his gut told him, this man was incompatible dangerous. One wrong move would mean his death, and there was nothing he could do about it. Then, the man spoke,
"Hello, sir. I'm sorry about earlier, your killing intent sparked my body's reaction. I beg you, please don't do that again or I might accidentally kill you. Please, don't make me do that."
He said it nonchalantly, but if anybody heard who he was talking to, they would be shocked. Even the king would talk politely to this man, but some nobody dared to say he right accidentally kill him? Ridiculous! While Gilbert wanted to retort, he knew this man was not lying. Reluctantly, he said,
"I'm sorry as well, but could I ask you, what are you doing here?" as he kept glancing at his daughter, trying to urge her to return upstairs.
The man gazed back at him like he was incompetent as if to say 'Are you dumb?'
He replied while lightly smiling, "Your daughter invited me here, I was just fulfilling my words, I said I would visit. You should ask her why she wanted to see me, actually."
Gilbert turned towards his daughter, who had her head down in embarrassment, and questioned, "Is that true, Sera?"
Sera looked down, embarrassed, and spoke softly, "Yes, Father. I asked him to visit so I could get to know him more." The longer the sentence, the quieter she spoke.
This angered Gilbert again, 'MY Sera, asked a man to come to the house?! Well, this man doesn't seem like a bastard, but, my girl can't be with just anyone, let's give him a test.' So he looked at the man and asked, "Might I ask you to come in? It is quite cold, and I would like to ask you some questions if that's okay with you?"
"Of course, thank you very much," the man replied politely.
He walked in and proceeded to the living room where he took a seat on the couch and waited for Gilberts' questions.
Gilbert sat down across the man and asked first, "How old are you, sir?"
The man had a contemplating look on his face, then replied, "I should be about 22, sir."
Gilbert was dazed, 'Should be? What the hell?'
The man noticed Gilberts' expression and continued, "I don't actually know my birthday, so I can only guess, but I should be around 22."
Gilbert sighed, "I see, what about your family?"
Once again, the man contemplated, "I don't have a family, for as long as I can remember, I have been by myself."
Gilbert was shocked, while orphans are not rare, them growing up was, most orphans would die early, that meant this man was capable either academically, or fighting wise.
He then asked, "What do you do for a living, if I might ask?"
Gilbert looked at the man and made eye contact, when he did, he shuddered, 'How could someone so young have such a gaze? How much death had this young man seen?' His eyes gleamed with the indifference of life.
While still in shock, a voice shook him back to reality, "I am a handyman, I would say. I do anything I can to make money." A mercenary? Not great, but also not the worst. He needed to ask one more question.
"What do you want from my daughter?" he asked with seriousness, this was the most important question he asked. Depending on the man's answer, he would decide how to proceed.
The man looked at Sera, when most men would do this, their eyes would either reveal lust or desire to possess, however, this man's gaze only had admiration, nothing else. That was the only answer Gilbert needed, he said, "Don't answer, I can see you don't want her to possess her nor are you lustful."
With that, Gilbert left the room and headed upstairs, leaving the two by themselves, one who was smiling and one who was incredibly embarrassed.
