Sighing slightly Roxy Migurdia looked at the house in front of her. It was the home she would be staying at for the foreseeable future in order to train a child in the arts of magic. Honestly, she didn't have high hopes.
She had heard many times that parents will request magic tutors for their little 'genius' without any reasonable proof that they could even use magic let alone be called a genius in the art. Even worse was that the child she was meant to tutor was merely two and a half years old.
The only reason she accepted the job in the first place was to secure funds for her travels. She doubted she would do anything substantial here and was of the opinion that it would be a waste of time entirely.
Sighing once again she went to knock on the door however the door swung open before she could even make contact with it. Looking down she noticed a child dangling from the door handle with an emotionless look on his face.
She couldn't understand how the child had known she was here and truth be told she was extremely off put by his lack of expression. For a child, he was quite cute and seemed to be fairly thin compared to the usually chubby children but his expression made him seem… mysterious? Hard to get along with? It was hard to describe.
"Come inside." The boy told her and turned around without hesitation leaving a stunned Roxy behind. Roxy had seen and met many nobles who enjoyed acting as though they were emotionless for no reason but this was the first time she felt it was natural which was odd.
"Ah! You must be Rudy's teacher. It's nice to meet you I'm Zenith." A beautiful blond woman said with a smile on her face as she came from the kitchen while drying her hands with a towel. She seemed to be kind and loving however that only enforced the conclusion that she hired her due to her blind faith in her child.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am. I am Roxy Migurdia. Thank you for entrusting your child with me." Roxy greeted the lady of the home she'll be living at for the duration of her job with a soft smile on her young face.
"Oh, it's no problem at all. Well, I'll leave you two alone now. You be good Rudy." Zenith said with a soft smile, gently patting her child's head only for him to lean into her touch. For such an emotionless child it was oddly adorable.
Looking at her the child called Rudy motioned for her to follow him only stopping at a nearby hill where there was a fairly wide space where they could see anyone around them and avoid damaging the house or accidentally hit a passerby.
"Since we'll be together for a while why don't we introduce ourselves? As you heard I am Roxy Migurdia, a wandering adventurer and mage." She introduced herself briefly while searching for any potential targets.
"Rudeus Greyrat." Her student briefly introduced himself while looking at her seriously. His eyes seemed unnaturally intelligent and seemed like they were trying to peer into her soul, it was incredibly off putting.
"It's nice to meet you Rudeus. Then before our first lesson, I'll tell you about the seven ranks." She began as paced back and forth absnemindedly. She had quite a few students before but none were so difficult to read. It would surely be challenging.
"I already know that and how to use basic magic." Rudeus explained before she could even begin making her look at him in doubt. A two and a half year old child knew how to use basic grade magic? That was something she would never believe.
As if noticing her doubt the child named Rudeus raised his hand, a small blue sphere appearing out of thin air a moment later. Looking at the sphere of water she couldn't help but freeze. There was no chant, it just… appeared.
"It seems you're worth teaching." Turning around Roxy muttered with a faintly excited smile on her face mixed with disbelief. Chantless magic was something that was researched extensively yet never accomplished and yet a two year old child had done just that?!
"Mhm." Nodding his head her student hummed in acknowledgment. Looking at her student she couldn't help but feel like he didn't understand what he had just done. This was one of the rare times a parent who calls their child a genius was correct and he didn't even know it?
"Do you know what you just did? Chantless magic is something that has been studied for centuries and never truly had a decent result that could be compared to what you just did." She explained to her student who didn't seem to understand what he had just done.
"Why? All that it needs is a firm mental image." Her student explained with a tilt of his head making Roxy freeze. She expected him to say something along the lines of it just working instead of him actually understanding how it worked.
"Then what did you imagine to activate the spell?" Roxy questioned curiously, mentally preparing herself to memorize every word he said. It didn't matter if he was decades younger than her, she needed to know.
"How does magic function? What are its rules?" Her student questioned her lightly, no emotion visible in his expression yet his voice was full of curiosity. The question caught her off guard since it was never something people generally thought of.
Magic was studied but not the specifics that she could tell her student was asking about. For example, when somebody uses the spell [Water Ball] they don't think 'How did that happen?' they think 'How can I make that happen better?' because people assumed it happened because magic is magic and no further thought was necessary.
"That's what I want to figure out. Will you help me?" Her student questioned her lightly with a cute tilt of his head. She couldn't tell what he was thinking with his face being the way it was but she could tell that he was being sincere.
"Gladly." She agreed without hesitation. Not only was it her job in the first place but she was also interested as a mage. Being written down in history seemed impossible in the past but with her disciple, it seemed more realistic.
"So far all I know is that magic spells have three requirements, knowledge, belief, and energy." Her disciple explained to her while she memorized every single word he said as though it was from Saint Milis himself.
The three requirements were fairly easy to understand but she couldn't understand why knowledge or belief would be important. Energy was obvious but the other two were extremely random.
"Each spell requires all three to work and-" Her disciple explained to her while she listened seriously. Her goal had been to find a job in the capital but maybe she didn't need to go there any more.
Her disciple, no, her teacher was opening a doorway to the new path of magic and she could not be more excited to see where it ends.
