Chapter 18: Empyreal River

Alon chatted for a bit longer with everyone.

Hans told him that the old lady had volunteered to tend to Alon's injuries because her grandson had managed to escape unscathed because Alon confronted Herrick by himself.

After a bit longer everyone left except Adam.

"Herrick and the others were arrested by the Knights because their action put the residents in danger. They will not get out easily." Adam summarized the events after Alon had fainted.

"Thank you," Adam added in a low voice.

"Will you tell me what happened to Helena's parents?" Alon asked him with a pleading expression.

"She used to live in a peaceful village with her parents at the very edge of the Sylvester family's territory. But one day, because of our family's arrogance we fell into a trap laid by the Lester family. After that day our family's forces decreased quite a lot, it was enough to make the Sylvester House take on a passive stance." Adam calmly summarized the events of the past, "The Lester house kept on provoking our family by slaughtering the residents that came under our territory, and that Helena's village was one of their victims. Helena was lucky enough to survive."

"I asked you what happened to her parents," Alon asked in a serious tone when Adam emitted the information he asked for.

"There are many who share the same fate as her, it's not that uncommon." Adam rebutted as he got up to leave.

"I don't care for what I have not involved myself in, but I've decided to get involved this time. Tell me." Alon declared his involvement in the matter.

Adam sighed heavily and sat back down.

"When the Lester house attacked the village, Herrick was the leader. Helena's father used to be a soldier for our family, so he fought against the Lester house killing a dozen of their men. But he was soon captured and because he killed Herrick's men, rather than killing him right away, Herrick had his men unite the family. Helena and her mother were dragged to where her father was. Helena's father and mother begged Herrick to spare their daughter." Adam took a brief pause taking a deep breath.

"Her mother was raped in front of Helena, while her father was burned alive. All she could do was sit and watch." Adam's voice was starting to shake as he went on, "She was only ten then, it has been seven years now."

Alon felt a rage build up inside his heart, he was overflowing with emotions. He didn't want to feel such emotions, they were not pleasant in the least, but still, he did not resist them.

He welcomed those emotions while he shut his eyes.

Adam went on about how Herrick left Helena alive because he was in a good mood after toying with her parent's life.

It was like Adam was living those very moments himself. He could not stop speaking, he could not stop ranting. He went on about how his family's troops arrived at the village and 'rescued' Helena; about how broken she was when he first saw her, about how difficult it was for Helena to come to trust him, about how she relives that nightmare every night.

Adam finished 'ranting' and looked up at Alon.

Alon had lain back on the bed with his eyes shut tight, but Adam could see the redness at the edges of his eyes.

Adam sighed once before getting up and leaving the room.

Just as Adam left the room, Alon opened his eyes.

************************

"Mother, father I let him live. I could have killed him but I let him live." Helena said while looking outside the window, at the night sky as tears trickled on her cheeks.

"I'm sorry."

Helena looked at Alon who was standing on the branch right outside her window.

"Adam told you?" Helena asked calmly while wiping away her tears.

"I asked him to," Alon replied looking at Helena's face reflecting the moonlight.

Her childish features seemed so mature for some reason; her black hair, her puppy eyes, her small mouth, everything about her was so beautiful at that moment that Alon was dazed.

He jumped from the branch, landing in her room through the window, and looked her in the eye.

Her eyes widened at Alon's action.

"Are you okay?" Alon asked gently.

Helena looked Alon in the eye as tears began to form in hers.

Alon did not say anything and pulled her into an embrace.

He did so because he felt that he would be devoured by emotions if he looked Helena in her eyes.

He felt his heart melt.

He felt all the walls melting along with his heart itself, as though something was revealing itself for the very first time.

Something was pulling at his consciousness.

Alon felt his heartbeat slowing down before it came to a complete halt.

He felt himself slipping away from himself; like he was falling into darkness but not quite so.

He could no longer feel the warmth from the embrace he was sharing with Helena just a second ago.

He not able to open his eyes or it was that there was only darkness around him. After falling for a bit longer; he felt that there was light outside.

He slowly tried to open his eyes.

In front of him was a huge river, with neither its beginning nor end in sight.

The river had so many colors, that black and white was like what a spider's web was to the human eye; almost not there.

Every time the river flowed, it would give birth to a new color.

He felt as if all the colors he had experienced before were because he was suffering from color blindness, and finally, he had been cured.

He was immersed in the beautiful reality he had been kept from till now.

Alon was enchanted by the Empyreal River's beauty; he started to approach it slowly and slowly began to run towards it.

But the closer he desired to go, the more distant the river seemed to be.

After trying for an unknown amount of time, Alon gave up and sat down atop of darkness itself; in this space, there was only darkness and the empyreal river.

He closed his eyes in resignation.

But he could still see the Empyreal River same as before.

He shut his eyes again, but the River was still in his view.

No matter how many times he tried to close his eyes, the river would not disappear from his view. It was like he was forbidden to not look at this Empyreal River.
