Monstrous Ascension: Endless Monster Evolution

The entire solar system was destroyed before anyone could notice or even understand what had happened. A massive comet changed its course and ended up hitting the sun, causing a chain reaction that made our biggest star expand and then become a supernova. Five hundred seconds later, Earth started to get hotter, and in five seconds, all the life on the planet burned and died. That was supposed to be the end of the human race, but for some reason, all the humans began to reincarnate as monsters in another world. Those who wanted to struggle and live for a while longer could fight and evolve, even reincarnate in other forms if they tried hard... Kane was one of them, he wouldn’t let himself be hunted without reason, and he was determined to climb up the food chain of that new world that had many fantasy races and monsters, gods and demons, hunters and overlords.

Kane thought that something like that might really happen, but to think he wouldn't fight a single monster all the way to the east side of the dungeon was… disheartening, to say the least.

"I'm not a battle freak, but I do need the reincarnation points…."

(Congratulations! You survived for one hour. You received one reincarnation point.") (x16)

In any case, He obtained a few while he walked to the other side, so the situation wasn't that bad. Regardless, that dungeon was really immense despite the fact that only insect-like monsters could be found there.

In the end, Kane confirmed the hypothesis that monsters were avoiding his presence after seeing some bats dead on the ground. Some of them had teeth marks, and their bodies seemed fresh. So, it was like that some monster left them behind. Probably a spider because the corpse was quickly becoming purple thanks to the poison. It was a pity to ignore a free meal, but Kane didn't want to risk and eat something poisoned.

After those sixteen hours, Kane found the first dead-end on the east side of the dungeon, but nothing more than that. After investigating that area, he found a few spiders' nests abandoned but no sign of the spiders.

"It looks like they spawn on this side too… but man, I never thought I would miss the fights against monsters. I guess I'm becoming one of them much faster than I imagined…"

Kane was bored since he had stored too much energy but didn't do anything aside from walking for several hours. The only things he could do were, fight, eat, and sleep. He couldn't sleep because he still had energy after eating several bats, he couldn't eat because he wasn't finding any enemies, and he couldn't fight because the monsters were running away from him… at that rate, he would starve to death.

"Well, if the monsters here are scared of me, that only means one thing… that I'm not supposed to be here."

Usually, in fantasy stories, the equivalent of the human race would hunt down monsters to decrease their population. If an unusually powerful monster appears, they will create a group to kill it. However, Kane didn't find a single human in that dungeon… so he couldn't understand fully what was going on. However, the thing that he had to do didn't change, and that was to get the hell out of that dungeon.

It would be a real pain in the ass if that dungeon had several floors, and the entrance to the next floor would be in the middle of that one, but Kane decided to explore the extremities of the east side of the dungeon first. If he doesn't find the exit of that place there, Kane would be forced to continue his search only he finds his next meal because he is starting to feel hungry.

"I know I have the power to hunt down the monsters with relative ease; as long as I don't mess up, I can defeat even evolved spiders. However, waiting for another evolved spider look for me will be a pain… So, I have to hunt the monsters without letting them know about my presence. It will take time to be able to do that with ease, and most likely, I won't be able to do it in the middle of a battle."

Kane tried to do until now several times, but now he was a bit more confident in succeeding because he was hungry. That kind of thing would force him to do things better… hopefully. If he fails again, he will probably starve to death. After coming that far, dying in that manner would be quite annoying, even though Kane had more than enough coins to start over. That being said, he didn't want to experiment, actually dying of hunger or thirst.

"If the monsters can do it… then I should be able to feel their presence as well."

There wasn't a single thing that confirmed that, but at least that kind of thought made Kane feel motivated. Again, in fantasy stories, people would focus their senses or use magic to locate other beings around them. However, Kane had no idea how to use his mana like that… Although he could use magic, it was just a knowledge that popped into his head that he couldn't fully understand. It was simple enough that he could create a Water Ball only by thinking, but it was complicated enough that he couldn't just create some water for him to drink.

Also, even though Kane was once a college student, he wasn't incredibly smart or someone who could concentrate on doing certain things that easily. The moment he closed his eyes to concentrate on every single thing around him, he began to hear something very annoying, his own voice inside his head.

"I'm hungry. I'm hungry. I'm hungry…"

Trying to ignore his inner voice, Kane continued to concentrate. As expected, he couldn't even hear his heart beating despite the fact that he couldn't hear a single thing nearby. Little by little, he was confirming that he was really deep underground; thanks to that, the wind couldn't make the sound of things spread that easily. However, that also means that the wind couldn't suppress the sound of the same things.

It took him quite a while, but Kane eventually heard some shrieks in the distance… as well as the sound of something being wrapped in spider threads. A blue window didn't pop out, telling him that he had learned a new skill, but Kane felt satisfied in achieving something thanks to his own efforts.

"It isn't all that practical… but at least this tells me that I have some animalistic instincts, probably thanks to this body of mine. I guess weirdly enough, I should thank my own hunger for forcing me to do this."

Kane was still hearing his own voice telling him that he was hungry, so he couldn't get carried away. Unless he learns to focus his senses much faster, he wouldn't be able to find his prey or enemies more quickly before they find him. It was evident that he had to improve that because the monsters were still able to run away from him. After playing tag with it for half an hour, Kane only found his next meal.
