46 Crimson double-headed bear
A few minutes after the Hunters closed the gate of the city, a loud sound came from over the forest which broke Aurus from his thoughts. All of the Hunters had climbed up and Aurus could tell there were about two thousand of them. Climbing up on the city wall himself, he saw the first wave. The number of monsters was outstanding as there were almost three thousand of them. According to previous beast waves, the first wave was always the smallest one.
The Hunters with long-ranged weapons started to attack from the top of the wall while every Hunter with a flying contracted beast summoned them to attack the enemies. Aurus had Zaya and Attra go and attack but since he worries about his little dragon, he told her to follow his first contracted beast.
As the fight started, the beasts started to be exterminated and after a while, Hunters started to jump down from the wall to join the fight. Aurus joined them as he jumped down and his two contracted beasts came closer to him as the Hunters started to push back the monsters.
Concentrating on the feeling he had before he went back inside the walls, Aurus started to kill the monsters at a good speed. Thankfully, the first beast wave mostly had monsters from the silver rank and under with around a dozen or two of gold rank beasts. The dark-gold rank beasts would only attack in the last wave along with the superbeast.
Aurus swung his sword and he was pretty excited as he could feel himself improving. With Zaya and Attra taking out the beast on both sides of Aurus, he was able to focus on the beasts in front of himself. With long-ranged attacks from the Hunters on the top of the wall, the fight was going pretty well.
Of course, while Aurus was indeed very concentrated on his sword and his combat with the beasts in front of him, he never stopped being careful. After all, he didn't want to die and he didn't want his contracted beasts to die. He had grown attached to the little two.
From time to time, he could hear screams from the other Hunters. Hearing their tragic screams, he could easily tell that they had either been hurt or they were killed a moment later by the monsters. However, Aurus just like the other Hunters had no time to take care of them. After all, there were monsters threatening to kill them at the slightest inattention and none of them wanted to die. Anyway, there were some people specialized for this kind of thing who would come out to help those poor Hunters.
As Aurus fought, he noticed his improvement and whenever there were some flying monsters, Aurus sent Attra to take care of them. After all, its mutation task was to kill one thousand flying monsters. He would obviously send Attra to take care of them.
Ever since she stopped closing her eyes while spewing her flame, she had been a lot more effective in fights. Thanks to that she could now easily kill any silver rank monsters and she could kill with some difficulty gold rank stage 1 and 2 monsters while it would be a big fight against those at the third stage.
Aurus held his shortsword in his hand as he continued to hack down the monsters. However, at some points, he noticed that he wasn't able to improve himself with those weak opponents. Shaking his head while feeling annoyed at only fighting weaker monsters he noticed that the first wave was already almost done.
Currently what he was fighting were mostly iron rank beasts with a small number of silver rank beasts. He couldn't wait for the next wave. He had more or less become addicted to fighting at this moment as he loved the feeling of improving himself and improving his skills.
With less than five hundred monsters left, Aurus continued to advance against the monsters and seeing how easily he dispatched them, they too tried to advance only to be blocked by the monsters. Since it was the first wave, most of the Hunters fighting were bronze rank, iron rank or silver ranks with a few gold rank to take care of the beasts gold rank.
However, this time they certainly would not have to do anything as Aurus had already found the gold-ranked beasts in the monster crowd.
With Zaya and Attra killing the weaker beasts around Aurus, he went straight for the gold rank beasts and started to fight them immediately. The first wave had annoyed him a little and now he was really eager to fight the stronger opponents.
Amongst the ten gold rank monsters, nine of them were on the first and second stage while a crimson double-headed bear was at the third stage. Aurus obviously didn't stand there dumbly and went straight for the weakest of them.
After all, he wanted to fight them and not send himself to death. If he went directly to the bear and couldn't end it fast, he would be surrounded. As such, when Attra and Zaya finished killing the weaker monsters in the surroundings, they came and helped Aurus to take care of the weakest gold rank monsters as he went to the crimson double-headed bear.
The bear had a crimson coloured fur and its eyes were a deep black. Not only the iris but the entire eye was completely black. It stood easily at seven feet tall and had sharp claws which were all as big as Aurus's hand.
Seeing this monster in front of himself, Aurus was confident in killing it. As if understanding the confidence of Aurus from the unblinking focused eye contact, both of the bear's heads growled and they charged at Aurus.
On the walls, the Hunters were looking at Aurus in amazement. In the beginning, they thought he would be killed by the gold rank beasts. However, after seeing him take care of all of them with his contracted beasts, they were both shocked and curious about what would happen next.
With his shortsword in hand, Aurus evaded the first head of the bear and ducked to evade the second head. At the same time, he stabbed his sword in the bear's leg. A moment later, Aurus rolled to the side, evading the swipe of the bear's leg.
Getting up rapidly he grinned happily and he attacked the bear once again. This time, when the first bear head attacked, the bear's left head went down a little to try and eat him from the side. However, as if he had seen this coming, Aurus retreated by one step and since the second head missed, he managed to close in on the bear's body. Stabbing directly in the neck of the bear, it growled in pain as it lifted both heads and charged once again at Aurus.
Although Aurus was confident in killing the beast, he was still attentive as he furrowed his brows. Blocking the sharp teeth with his sword, Aurus retreated a step back and plunged his sword in the left eye of the left head. The second head was bleeding quite heavily as Aurus continued to fight with it.
A few minutes later, Aurus has received a small cut from one of its claws. However, Aurus had managed to behead the right head of the crimson double-headed bear and the left head only had a single eye left.
Seeing the bear getting weaker and weaker, Aurus approached for the kill. He sidestepped, avoiding the bear's attack and slashed directly at its neck. With blood pouring down from its neck, the bear fell heavily on the ground and seeing that there were no monsters left in the surroundings, Aurus sat down on the bear's body. He was currently quite fatigued but kept a straight posture in case a monster was hidden in the surroundings.
A few minutes later, most of the Hunters came closer and upon confirming that Aurus was fine, they congratulated him. Most of them had recognized Aurus as the owner of the resource shop and obviously, they would be respectful.
A few Hunters offered to bring back the bear's corpse due to how fatigued Aurus was. After nodding and giving his thanks, Aurus went back inside the city and sat down on a random chair in the surroundings.
As he looked around, he could hear the shout of pain and the cries of some people. Those people were either those who had been injured or the family members of the fallen Hunters. Aurus felt sad for those people who had lost a family member as he could remember when he had lost his own family.
Closing his eyes while yawning a little bit, Aurus simply stayed there along with Zaya and Attra who kept surveillance around him. With his two contracted beasts, he felt secure and dozed off a little bit. However, when someone approached him, he instantly awoke and looked at the coming person. Seeing it was one of the butlers of the four families, he looked at him and waited for them to speak.
"Hello, sir. I was just here to inform you that the first wave has been completely decimated thanks to your help. We have received information from the scouts that the second wave is still far away and would only arrive tomorrow afternoon." The butler lowered his head slightly when talking to Aurus.
If previously he had only been cordial due to their master order, now he was truly in awe of Aurus. After all, he could sense that Aurus's cultivation was at the silver rank stage 3. Anyone at this rank at 18 years old was considered a genius. Not to mention that he had managed to kill a monster a rank higher than his own and it was also amongst the strongest of the gold rank stage three.
As for the strength demonstrated in the shop previously, the butler simply believed someone was protecting Aurus and he didn't investigate anymore than that. After all, the fact that they could buy resources from him was more than enough for them.
