3 Adventurer's task

Having completed the system's task, he moved away from prying eyes before taking out the short sword from the system and at the same time, the skill icon appeared on the system screen.

The system icons were more and more numerous and it gave Aurus a feeling of accomplishment. Opening the skill icon, it was completely empty. Having no way to actually understand how to gain skills, he figured he would learn eventually. Turning back to the task icon, he noticed that two new tasks had appeared on the task list.

[Task: Become an E rank adventurer.

Reward: Increase of the system space used for bringing back monster cultivation resources.]

[Task: Complete your first adventurer's task.

Reward: Identification skill.]

'Wait. There is a limit to the number of resources I can bring back per travel? Obviously, it also means that there is a limit of travel I can use or a limit of time. If not, there is no point in upgrading the system space. I also have a feeling that I can only stay a certain amount of time in this world as well.'

Faced with this realization, he turned to the second task and immediately realized that he could gain skills through completing the system's tasks.

With an excited smile, Aurus turned to the task board of the adventurer's guild and found himself extremely familiar with it. It was exactly like a task board in any novels and mangas he had read. Looking at the tasks, he took a slime slaying task. There were a few tasks like killing goblins and collecting certain herbs. However, they took too much time and Aurus was more excited about getting his identification skill than to slay goblins.

Furthermore, there was a saying back on Earth that goblins were stronger than they were portrayed as. Well, anyway, he just wanted to do his system tasks before anything else. It was said that one had to complete a total of ten F rank tasks before being promoted to E rank.

Having chosen the quest, he saw that he had to slay ten slimes and that he would receive fifty bronze coins or 5 bronze coins per slime killed. Taking the quest paper and submitting it to the counter, he immediately left the city to go to the forest at the left of the city.

Slimes was an extremely weak monster. However, they ate anything they were next to and they reproduced extremely fast. As such, it was necessary to slay them every day in order to protect humans. Not to mention the slimes who destroyed nature, when there was an extremely large amount of slime in an area, they would agglomerate and evolve into a mega slime. Those were dangerous even to humans and could easily pose a threat to the C ranked adventurers.

While C ranked adventurers were said to not be really special in this world, in this small city, there was only a single C ranked adventurer which was the guild master. As such, a mega slime was extremely dangerous in small cities with a few amount of adventurers.

While Goran had been processing his adventurer's license, he had explained a little about the adventurers in the town and he explained that the adventurers were only working to supply themselves and their families without really giving their all to become stronger and increase their ranks.

The tasks starting from C rank we're obviously more dangerous and they posed a deadly threat to the adventurer. As such, those adventurers were not very interested, they only wanted to survive and come back before nighttime to their house with their children and wife.

Due to this, C ranked tasks in Coblue city were numerous and the guild master had to be the one to take care of most of them since it would be dangerous to the town otherwise.

Goran after explaining this to Aurus back then had tapped his shoulder and said "I'm sure you'll become a great adventurer in the future so work hard.".

Aurus hearing this was oblivious that the receptionists of the guild were tasked by the guild master to say this in order to increase the morale of new adventurers. Nonetheless, everything worked out as Aurus was indeed interested in being a great adventurer.

While thinking of this, Aurus finally arrived next to the forest and started to look for the slimes. Those monsters were said to be either blue or green and they were slimy. They were said to have a higher resistance to physical attack but as long as the adventurer could hit the core supplying its energy, they could easily kill them. They were after all said to be the weakest monster. Except for their core in the center of their slimy body, they were said to be weak to fire magic but for Aurus who didn't possess any magic, it didn't matter much.

In the small city of Coblue, slimes were said to be at the outskirt of the forest on the side of the city and indeed, as Aurus approached the forest, he could see masses of blue and green moving up and down while slowly taking all the vegetation wherever their bodies passed.

The forest was made of sparse trees and he could easily see deep into the forest. Along with the little slimes and a small lake a little further inside the forest, it was actually a normal forest one could see everywhere.

Seeing those slime who looked extremely cute, Aurus calmly and stealthily approached the slime and when he was at arm's length, he tried to stab the slime. Missing the core and inserting his sword in the sticky blue mass, the slime rolled away and he felt that the slime turned around to look at him even though a slime's body had no eyes. Actually, it didn't have any facial features.

Rapidly approaching the slime, Aurus managed to one again insert his sword in the slime's body and this time, he managed to actually attack the core. The core being hit, it immediately stopped supplying energy and the body of the slime melted while the core fell on the ground. Picking up the core in his hands, Aurus was dumbfounded about the way the slime was killed. He had expected it to be this way after having remembered a few scenes from a manga he had read in the past. However, he was still shocked by the way the slime was killed.

Inserting the slime core in a small bag he had received from the adventurer's guild when submitting the quest, he went to the next slime in his field of view. There were around six slimes remaining from what he could see but he could see a few slimes in the forest. In that case, he figured he might be able to complete and submit the quest approximately an hour later.

Approaching the second slime, this time he made sure to aim properly and inserted the sword in the slime's body. Unsurprisingly, the slime was killed in a single hit. Of course, he wouldn't get his ego inflated from killing a slime. He couldn't forget how he missed the first time and how they were known as the weakest monster.

Making his way to the next slime, he continued to kill slimes until he managed to kill all ten of them for his task. Not wanting to wait any longer to complete the system's task in order to get the identification skill, he made his way back at a rapid pace.

Obviously, he wasn't that far from the city. As such, ten minutes later, he found himself in front of the adventurer's building once again. Pushing the door to enter, what welcomed him was an empty building. Figuring that the other adventurers had gone on a task themselves, he made his way to the counter and after handing over his adventurer's card, and the slimes cores, he waited for a while. The attendants at the counter had an item to verify that the core had indeed been killed recently and that the adventurer hadn't just bought the core in order to promote his rank rapidly.

Of course, small tricks still happened such as the nobles sending some of their men to hunt monsters for them to complete their task. In this way, they could upgrade rapidly. However, starting from being promoted to C rank, one had to pass a fighting test to be sure they had the fighting strength of C rank adventurers or they could easily die and bring with them a lot of people. C rank adventurers' tasks were fundamentally different as they were more crucial tasks that could involve the lives of a lot of normal civilians. As such, they were carefully tested and only then were they promoted to C rank.

After a short while, the lady at the counter came back with the remuneration, 50 bronze coins and handed him his adventurer's card back. Seeing the quest completed he said goodbye at the lady and immediately opened the system tasks and indeed, the quest had been completed and he had received the identification skill.

Closing the task screen, and opening the skill screen a new skill had appeared.

[Skill: Identification. (F rank 0/100)

This skill can identify the basic characteristics of any item or person.]

As always, the system gave a very brief explanation. However, he totally understood how to use this skill and he was surprised to see that he could grow his skill only by using it. He didn't know how people upgrade their skills back in this world but he knew full well that the skill wouldn't stay at the F rank for very long.

Closing the icon and opening the task icon again, he knew that he had received a new task. This system never let him do nothing and always found a way for him to grow as fast as possible. Looking at the tasks in the icon, he was surprised by this task.

[Task: Buy a skill.

Hint: People in this world are naturally born with skills and cannot develop them. For those less fortunate, people found a way to sell their skills and for others to buy them.

Reward: Information about the time the user can stay in this world and related information about the materials the user can bring back.

'Wow, the system is getting lazier and lazier. I bet next time, he's just gonna offer me points so that I can buy what I want instead of rewarding me with items and new functions,'

Without any other system tasks, he went back to the counter to ask about buying skills.
