Avery yawned as she got out of her car. She saw Detective Gid rushing towards her and her face creased with confusion.
''Detective Sandas, how could you be so heartless? How could you go so far as to cross the line between morality and sheer wickedness?'' Detective Gid said as he stopped in front of Avery.
''Good morning to you too, Detective Gid. How was my night? Not too good, but its daybreak so we move.'' Avery said sarcastically and looked at Detective Gid with a mocking gaze.
''What? Hey! How could you?'' Detective Gid sounded disappointed.
''What are you talking about? What did I do?'' Avery yawned again and saw Suleiman walking towards her.
''The victim called this morning saying she wished to settle.'' Suleiman walked over and explained.
''Oh, really?'' Avery's face brightened with a relieved smile.
''You smiled. Did you just smile? Detective Sandas, you have crossed the line. Now I know you are just a money crazed obsessed bitch.'' Detective Gid spat out.
Avery looked at Detective Gid and let out a sarcastic chuckled. ''A money crazed obsessed bitch? Well, at least I am that and I don't pretend about my obsession with money. Detective Gid, let this be the last time you will insult me because of a case. Don't let me interpret it as incompetency on your part.''
''Incompetency?'' Detective Gid couldn't believe what he was hearing. He felt absolutely wronged because the case was his to begin with.
''Yes!'' Avery replied sharply and stepped closer to him adding, ''if you were capable enough then, you wouldn't have lost your case to me. Instead of attacking me, you should be working hard least I take more of your cases away.''
Avery turned to walk away and heard Detective Gid speak.
''This is why women shouldn't be in the police force. All they do is wagging their tails at their superiors.''
Avery stopped in her strides and turned. 'What did you just say?''
''Senior…'' Suleiman held Avery's hand.
''Let go, Suleiman!'' Avery said as she glared at Detective Gid.
''What are you going to do? Fight me?'' Detective Gid asked mockingly.
A lot of the police officers were looking at them from the entrance.
''You lost your case to me because of your incompetency and now you are attacking me based on my gender, right? Detective Gid, I think that you are the low one right now. You can't stand the fact that a woman solved a case you couldn't, right?''
''Hey!'' Detective Gid yelled.
''Hey? Did you just hey me? You think you are superior because I am a woman? What a cheapskate.'' Avery said and walked away.
''With all that money, your character isn't refined. I think that you should work on your character first because no matter how much money you try to amass, it still won't hide the fact that you are just an orphan who lacked home training.'' Detective Gid said out loudly.
Avery chuckled and turned. With swift steps, she was about to punch Detective Gid when someone else did. Avery was taken aback when she saw another person beating Detective Gid up.
''I knew there was something fishy about you the first time I saw you. Attacking a woman because you think she can't do anything to you is cheap.'' The woman said before turning to face Avery.
''Who are you…?'' Avery asked the woman.
''Hi, I am Detective Mariah Sanchez from the City Police Service. I was transferred here last week but I only got time to come here today after closing my work at the city.'' The woman called Mariah introduced herself.
''Hi, I am…''
''Avery Sandas, I know. Nice to finally meet you Detective Sandas. My uncle told me a lot about you.'' Mariah extended a handshake before turning to Detective Gid who had stood up with the help of the other officers.
''Detective Constable Sanchez?'' Detective Gid asked nervously.
''Yes, and you, Detective Gid has being suspended for violation of the police ethics and harassing a female officer. Spend a month at home with a pay cut and learn from it.'' Mariah said indifferently.
''But…'' Detective Gid tried to argue.
''Are you going against my orders?'' Mariah asked.
''No, I will do that right away.'' Detective Gid replied and walked away.
''I'm sorry you had to go through that, Detective Sandas.'' Mariah apologized to Avery.
''Huh? No, you don't have to apologize for anything.'' Avery said.
Mariah smiled and turned towards the building. ''Mind taking me to the Chief's office, Detective Sandas?'' Mariah asked.
''Sure, let's go, Detective Constable Sanchez.''
''I prefer being called Detective Sanchez or Mariah. Feel free to refer to me as any of those. I will call you Avery, since I'm older than you.'' Mariah said with a refreshing smile. She looked more relaxed interacting with Avery.
''Then, I will call you Detective Sanchez.''
''Alright, let's go.'' Mariah said as she walked inside.
Avery walked behind Mariah, trying to process what had just happened. She didn't know why but she felt some reservations towards the woman who had just appeared out of nowhere. She didn't even know about the transfer.
A while later….
''Mariah, you are welcome to the district. I didn't think you would be able to get here so soon.'' Chief Johnson said as he welcomed Mariah.
''I had to come and report first. I apologize for taking too much time.'' Mariah said with a smile.
''No trouble at all. Everyone, gather around. I need to introduce someone to all of you.'' Chief Johnson announced.
The officers in the working area all gathered. Avery stood beside Suleiman watching Chief Johnson suspiciously.
''Everyone, this is Detective Constable Mariah Sanchez. She will be the new team leader of the Violence Crime Unit which will be formed soon. Actually, Mariah is here to get her own team. She will be in charge of recruiting the officers to join her team. Her team will be provided with a lot of incentives so good luck to those who want to join her.'' Chief Johnson said with a chuckle.
''Senior, wasn't that the team the Chief promised to help you lead? How come there is someone from the City here to lead that team?'' Suleiman whispered to Avery.
Avery clenched her fists tightly and maintained a professional smile. She looked at the Chief and noticed he was avoiding her gaze.
''Mariah, let's go to my office.'' Chief Johnson said after introducing Mariah.
''Alright, everyone I hope we get along!'' Mariah said and looked at Avery before going into the Chief's office.
