The sensation of falling through infinite space was disorienting. Maya's entire being felt suspended, as if she was no longer bound by the constraints of time or matter. She had expected pain, or maybe even an immediate end as the multiverse collapsed around her. But instead, there was just… nothingness.
Maya floated in the void, surrounded by fragments of light and energy, each one a shard of the realities she had just severed. She couldn't tell if moments or centuries were passing as she drifted, her body and mind weightless, untethered. She felt the hum of the multiverse all around her—fragments of herself flickering in and out of existence, slipping between worlds as easily as light bending through a prism.
But amidst the chaos, there was a strange peace. She had stopped the Nexus. She had made the sacrifice. And yet, as she floated through the void, a nagging doubt began to creep into her mind. Was it over? Was this what remained of her existence, an endless drift through fractured possibilities? Or was there more?
Suddenly, the darkness around her shifted, and Maya felt something tug at the edge of her consciousness, pulling her back from the void. She gasped as sensation returned to her body—her limbs were heavy, her lungs burning as they drew in air. She opened her eyes, and the world around her snapped into focus.
She was lying on the forest floor, the smell of damp earth and pine filling her nostrils. Above her, the trees towered like silent sentinels, their branches swaying gently in the wind. For a moment, everything felt normal—like she had just woken from a long, strange dream.
But then she remembered.
She bolted upright, her head spinning from the sudden movement. The Nexus. The doppelgänger. The collapse of realities. It all came flooding back in a rush, and Maya's heart pounded in her chest. She glanced around, her eyes scanning the dense forest for any sign of Leon—or the creature that had once been her reflection.
"Leon?" she called, her voice hoarse. "Leon, where are you?"
There was no response. Panic began to settle in as she stood, her legs trembling beneath her. The Nexus was gone. The Mirror Nexus had collapsed, and she had closed the rift. But where was Leon? Had he been pulled into the collapse along with her?
Maya spun in a slow circle, trying to get her bearings. The forest seemed familiar, but there was something off about it—something she couldn't quite place. The air felt heavier, thicker, as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting for something. The sky above was a dull, grayish hue, as though the colors of the world had been drained ever so slightly.
She took a few unsteady steps forward, scanning the underbrush for any sign of life. "Leon!" she called again, louder this time, but the only response was the rustling of leaves in the wind.
Just when she was about to give up hope, a voice called out from behind her.
"Maya."
She whirled around, her heart leaping with relief, only to freeze when she saw who stood before her.
It wasn't Leon. It wasn't anyone she recognized. But it was her.
Another version of herself, identical in every way, stood in the clearing, staring at her with an expression that was both curious and cautious. Maya's pulse quickened, memories of the doppelgänger's attack flooding her mind. She stepped back instinctively, her eyes narrowing.
"Who are you?" Maya demanded, her voice shaky. "Why do you look like me?"
The other version of herself raised her hands, palms out in a gesture of peace. "I'm not here to hurt you," she said softly. "I'm you. But I'm also not you."
Maya's confusion deepened, but she didn't lower her guard. She remembered what the Nexus had shown her—other versions of herself, twisted reflections that wanted to replace her. Could this be another trick?
"How do I know you're not like the doppelgänger?" Maya asked, taking another step back.
The other Maya's expression softened. "The doppelgänger was a shadow. A corrupted version of you. But I'm not like that. I'm… a fragment, left over from the collapse."
"A fragment?" Maya repeated, trying to make sense of it all.
The other version nodded. "When you severed the Nexus, you didn't just stop the convergence—you fractured it. Pieces of the multiverse still exist, echoes of what could have been. I'm one of those echoes."
Maya's mind reeled. The Nexus had collapsed, yes, but it hadn't been as clean as she'd hoped. There were still remnants of the other realities left behind, fragments of possibility that hadn't fully disappeared. And this… this other version of herself was one of those remnants.
"Does that mean the Nexus isn't really gone?" Maya asked, her voice tight.
The echo shrugged, her expression unreadable. "The Nexus is gone, but the multiverse… it's not something that can be fully destroyed. It's too vast, too complex. You closed the doorway, but you didn't erase the connections completely. There will always be echoes. Fragments."
Maya's stomach twisted. "So… what now? What happens to me? To us?"
The echo smiled faintly. "That's up to you. You closed the Nexus, but you're still connected to it. You have the power to choose your path now. You can let go of the multiverse entirely, live out your life in peace in this reality. Or…"
"Or what?"
"Or you can embrace it," the echo said, her eyes gleaming with a strange light. "You've seen the possibilities. You've felt the threads of reality. You can learn to navigate them, to move between worlds. You can become something more."
Maya felt a cold chill run down her spine. The idea of living a normal life, free from the multiverse's grasp, was tempting. She could go back, find Leon, try to live as if none of this had ever happened. But the other option… the idea of embracing the multiverse, of mastering the ability to travel between realities… it called to her.
"What happens if I choose that?" Maya asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The echo tilted her head, her expression calm. "You become a part of the multiverse. You move beyond the boundaries of this world. But once you make that choice, there's no going back. You'll never be tied to one reality again."
Maya's heart pounded in her chest. The weight of the decision pressed down on her, and she realized that everything she had fought for—everything she had experienced—had led her to this moment. She had seen the chaos and beauty of the multiverse, and now it was offering her a choice.
Live a single life, or embrace the infinite.
She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She could almost hear the hum of the multiverse around her, the echoes of countless realities overlapping in her mind. And in that moment, she knew what she had to do.
When she opened her eyes, the other version of herself was still watching her, waiting.
"I choose," Maya said softly, "to embrace it."
The echo smiled, and for the first time, Maya felt a deep, undeniable connection to the infinite possibilities that stretched out before her. The multiverse was vast, and it was hers to explore.
As the forest around her shimmered and shifted, Maya stepped forward, ready to begin her journey through the infinite.
