The Start

The blaring alarm clock pulled Alexander from the depths of slumber, its insistent wail jarring him into a bleary-eyed state. Groaning, he groped for his phone on the cluttered nightstand, fingers fumbling until he managed to silence the blaring noise. The digital display showed 7:00 AM, just like any other day—or so he thought.

"Honestly, who needs an alarm on a weekend?" he muttered to himself, rubbing his eyes as he pushed himself into a sitting position. The early morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over his modest apartment.

With a heavy sigh, he swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stifled a yawn. "Time to start the day, I guess."

His phone buzzed again, not content with just one attempt to wake him. He glanced at the screen, eyebrows furrowing at the barrage of notifications. Text messages, missed calls, news alerts—the sheer volume made his heart race.

"What's going on?" he wondered aloud as he tapped on a news app, his eyes widening as he read the headlines.

"Zombie Outbreak Spreads Rapidly Worldwide," the words stared back at him in stark black letters. He blinked, certain he was still half-asleep and trapped in some bizarre dream.

Scanning the article, his heart sank. The impossible had happened. Zombies weren't confined to movies or video games anymore; they were real, and they were tearing through cities around the world.

"No way…" he muttered, pinching himself to make sure he wasn't hallucinating.

His thoughts were interrupted by a low, guttural growl that seemed to come from outside his apartment door. His heart pounded in his chest as fear gripped him. Slowly, he approached the door, hand trembling as he turned the doorknob.

And then, it was there—a zombie. Its pallid skin hung loosely on its frame, tattered clothing clinging to its emaciated body. Its milky eyes locked onto Alexander, a primal hunger burning within them.

Time seemed to slow as panic surged through him. He stumbled backward, his heart racing as he fumbled for something—anything—to defend himself. His gaze landed on a nearby umbrella, and he seized it, holding it like a makeshift weapon.

"Stay back!" he shouted, his voice wavering with fear.

The zombie continued its slow, relentless advance, seemingly undeterred by his warning. Alexander's breath caught in his throat as he took another step back, his hands shaking violently.

In an instant, the zombie lunged at him, its rotten fingers clawing at the air as it closed the distance between them. Alexander's survival instincts kicked in, and he swung the umbrella with all his might, the improvised weapon colliding with the side of the zombie's head with a sickening thud. The impact sent the creature sprawling to the ground, and it writhed for a moment before falling still.

Alexander's breath came in ragged gasps as he stared down at the unmoving zombie. His thoughts were racing, his mind trying to process what had just happened.

As the initial shock wore off, the weight of his situation sank in. His safe, comfortable world had been shattered, and now, he was left alone, fighting for his life.

"I have to get out of here," he murmured, his eyes scanning the room for anything that might help him.

His phone buzzed again, this time with a message notification.

Well done, Alexander. You fought for your life. But there's more you can do.

The words were cryptic, and he stared at the screen in disbelief. Who was this sender? And what did they mean by "more you can do"?

The weight of the situation bore down on Alexander as he stood amidst the remnants of the zombie's attack. Breathing heavily, he clutched the shattered umbrella, his knuckles white from the force of his grip. The reality of the world outside had become a nightmare, and he was struggling to comprehend the magnitude of the chaos that had engulfed everything he knew.

With trembling hands, he pulled out his phone and dialed his parents' number. Each ring felt like an eternity as his heart clenched in his chest. His mother's voice finally crackled through the line, filled with a mixture of relief and anxiety.

"Alexander, oh thank goodness you're alright! We've been trying to reach you!"

His voice shook as he struggled to hold back tears. "Mom, Dad, I'm safe. I don't know what's happening, but I promise I'm going to find a way to get to you. I won't let anything happen to you."

There was a moment of heavy silence on the other end. Alexander could almost hear the worry in their voices, the unspoken fears of a parent who wanted to shield their child from the horrors of the world.

"Alex," his father's voice broke through, strong and yet laden with emotion, "we're okay for now. We've barricaded ourselves at home. But it's chaos out here. People are scared, and the news... It's like something out of a nightmare."

Tears welled in Alexander's eyes as he clung to the phone, his grip tightening as if he could physically bridge the distance between them.

"Dad, I promise I'll come for you. Just stay safe. We'll get through this together."

His mother's voice trembled with a mixture of gratitude and worry. "We love you, Alexander. Please be careful."

Hanging up the call, Alexander stared at his phone, a fierce determination burning in his eyes. He wouldn't let fear cripple him. He wouldn't be paralyzed by the chaos around him. He had to take action, for his own sake and for the people he cared about.

As he wiped away a tear, his phone buzzed again, this time with a different notification. He swiped the screen absentmindedly, expecting another message, but instead, a series of strange symbols and icons filled the display. Before he could react, a brilliant light engulfed him, blinding him momentarily.

He stared in shock and disbelief, his eyes darting across the bizarre display.

"What the hell is this?"

Alexander's eyes remained fixated on the screen, his heart pounding in his chest. It felt as though he had been suddenly transported into the pages of a fantastical web novel or an animated anime. The surreal nature of the situation was almost too much to comprehend, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he had become a character in a story beyond his wildest imagination.

The strange notification remained at the forefront of his thoughts, and he hesitantly swiped it away, hoping to clear the screen.

It seemed as though his actions were being acknowledged, and the display shifted, revealing a new set of options.

"I can't even tell what's real anymore."

As he was about to touch the holographic screen a Notification appeared.

Alex looked at the list in awe This was like some type of bizarre game, He was still trying to rap his head around all of it.

A loud thump and footsteps snapped him out of his trance. The familiar snarl of the undead grew louder, the putrid scent of decay invading his senses. He glanced around his room, looking for a means of escape.

Summoning was his only option. It was the only thing standing between him and the gruesome fate that awaited him outside.

He tapped the Summon tab on the system screen.

A list of available options materialized, and he carefully perused the choices. There were various categories, each with their own sub-classes and unique characteristics. He quickly scanned through the options, noting each summon's different abilities and attributes.

"This is amazing," he whispered, his excitement building.

[Congratulations for completing the quest: Kill your first zombie!-]

[Open Inventory To claim your first reward!]

Alexander quickly navigated to the inventory tab, on the screen a small gift-bag was shown.

He touched the bag, and a system notification appeared.

"Very good, based on the novels I've read these rewards are above average," Alexander said

[Would you like to summon the troops you've received?"]

A bright light filled the room, and a group of soldiers materialized in front of him.

He couldn't help but stare in awe. They were real people he had the idea that they were going to be robots are aliens.
