Melancholy

In a warm room, there is a bed and one window. The room is neat and tidy. However, it is filled with shelves that house books. Sitting on the bed is an elderly man whose name is Keres. Imagining himself in other worlds, while looking out the window. He breathes his last breaths and dies with a book in his hand.

After one minute.

"Didn't I just die? Where is my body? Why is it dark? Why are there two doors? Where am I?"

"Hehehe. Welcome to my domain child." A deep ancient but oddly at the same time young sounding voice spoke.

"I'm eighty-four...."

"I guess you can go ahead and die now."

"Wait!"

"I thought so. Now listen."

Keres would nod if he had a head at the moment.

"I rarely get to handle souls as they are usually handled by the others. However, just like you every now and then they slip by and are cared for by me..."

While the being was speaking. Keres was feeling extremely excited.

("Am I going to be reincarnated?)

"Those under my care went on...." The being continued speaking not aware of Keres lack of paying attention.

(I hope it's not back on Earth.)

"Legendary feats of...."

(Where would I be sent to though?)

"Conquering, bravery, sed....."

(Maybe a cultivating world?)

"Heroism and villainry...."

(Or a magical one?)

"Greatness. No! Awesomeness yes that's the word..."

(No better yet the world of Naruto would be awesome.)

"Becoming unmatched in their brilliance...."

(Although on second thought that would be scary. But dammit it would be awesome!)

Keres remembering what the being said interrupted the speech and asked with a little concern in his tone. "Wait how come you don't get to handle souls often?"

The being stopped in the middle of its speech and became silent. Keres waited for the being for a couple of minutes and was about to apologize for the interruption. When the being spoke.

"Were you not paying attention to what I was informing you about?"

Keres broke out in cold sweat. Or rather felt like he did since he doesn't have a body.

"No!, of course, I was paying attention to your magnificent speech. I was just wondering since every soul that you cared for went on to do such awesome things. How come you don't get to handle more?"

Although Keres wasn't really paying attention to what the being was saying. He was pretty sure he never heard the being give an explanation as to why so little souls end up in his domain.

After what felt like a couple of minutes of silence. The being spoke.

"Hmmmmm. Good question. The reason souls rarely come to me is that I am not a god who handles souls. I preside over beginnings, endings, time, and choice. Do you know who I am?"

Keres pondered for quite a while since he hasn't heard of or at least remember a god that ruled over these aspects. The two doors he saw don't help as well since he doesn't know any god associated with doors. For time itself though he knows Chronos is the Greek god of time. However, he didn't want to get the being identity incorrect in fear that he might get smited.

"If I get your name wrong will you kill me O great one?" Keres asked tentatively.

"That is for you to find out."

"You are Chronos then!" Keres exclaimed.

"No."

(F*ck!) Keres wanted to cry inside.

"Hehehe. What shall your punishment be? How does reincarnating as an insect sound?"

Hearing this Keres actually began to cry inside.

"O great one if I'm an insect. How am I supposed to continue your streak of caring for legendary reincarnators?"

"Hehehe. Why can't you continue the streak as a legendary soldier ant? Yes, I can see it now. You leading an army of billions to spread your queen's empire. Hehehehe. Bringing destruction and ruin to those who dare to impose you and your queen. Doesn't that sound interesting?"

"To be honest O great one. Not really. I would prefer if you sent to a world like those I read in my life. Worlds like Naruto, Super Gene, Release that Witch!, Bleach, Berserk, Skyrim, One Piece, Coiling Dragon, Against the Gods, Genius Doctor: Black Belly Miss, Dual Cultivation ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ..."

Keres went on to list hundreds of novels, books, and games. Giving a little explanation of what each world was like to the being. In hopes that the being would at least catch an interest in one of them and send him there. Now thinking about it though he regrets mentioning Berserk. That world would be too hardcore for him to go to.

When Keres was done with his list the being was strangely quiet.

(Dam! did it not like any of the worlds I described?)

Wondering why the being was quiet a horrifying thought came to Keres.

(Maybe it can't send me to any of those worlds? F*ck!)

"O great one, if you can't send me to any of those worlds can you atleast send me to earth with my memories intact?" Keres asked with as much reverence in his voice he could muster.

"Worried that I can't send you to those worlds, are you? hehehe."

"Well, a little to be honest."

"Don't worry I can send you those worlds but before I do. Don't try to resist me"

"What do you mean-?"

A huge force flowed into Keres's soul forcing making him feel like he was caught underwater by the waves. After a few seconds of being unable to speak the force disappeared allowing Keres to speak again.

"What did you do to me?" Keres asked nervously.

"I just searched through your soul to see where you came from to confirm a suspicion of mine."

"What suspicion was that?"

"That you were from Earth."

"And you why did you want to confirm that?"

"Lately a lot of the souls from your world that gets the chance to reincarnate somewhere else. Usually, ask for the worlds you just listed to me. Its been a strange ongoing phenomenon lately that the other gods have been experiencing."

"Who knew gods were such gossipers" Keres mumbled.

"Hahaha. You may go on your way now child"

"Wait where am I going? Don't I get to choo-"

After Keres was sent to his destination the being appeared. It had two faces, a tall, lean, and muscled body. Waving its hand a chair appeared. Taking its seat the being pulled out two wooden pipes from who knows where and began to puff. After a few puffs, the beings two faces smiled. And spoke to the two doors.

"You already chose child."
