Meeting the in-Laws

Gu Yuzhen simply smiled without answering her question.

The Gu family indeed traced its roots back to Tong City.

However, as Gu Yuzhen had grown up in France, he himself was a stranger to the city.

The pair took the elevator all the way up to the chairman's office on the top floor.

The staff they passed on the way would nod in greeting to Ming Qu.

She, in turn, also acknowledged them one by one.

However, as soon as they had passed by, they would stop, realizing Gu Yuzhen's presence.

Previously, it had been rumored online that Ming Qu was now Mrs. Gu. Now that Mr. Gu himself had shown up at the Ming Group building, the rumors were all but confirmed.

"You're very fast."

Gu Yuzhen held open the heavy doors as Ming Qu followed him in.

"How could I not be? I wouldn't even realise it before I was dead, otherwise."

"Let's see who'll dare to touch my woman."

Ming Qu's lighthearted words were met with Gu Yuzhen's ruthlessness.

She turned her head, smiling wantonly.

She passed a document across the mahogany desk to Gu Yuzhen.

"The Ming family is too large. I suspect that the circumstances of Old Master Ming's death were not so simple."

In the document was information that she had found while digging through the chairman's office. It recorded all the contributions that Old Master Ming had made while he was alive. A few of them had directly affected uncles from the side branches of the Ming family.

Gu Yuzhen flipped through them roughly, swallowing down words that were clamoring to come up.

She had said that she didn't want him to interfere.

"So, what do you plan to do?"

After holding back for a while, he finally decided upon these words.

Ming Qu paced a few steps before leaning against the desk, and looked at him lazily.

"Investigate."

"How can a young lady like you investigate such a chaotic family alone? Aren't you tired? My heart aches for you."

Gu Yuzhen's sudden concern had caught Ming Qu off guard.

She lowered her eyebrows and chuckled. Her reaction was obvious, her shoulders twitching.

Seeing her wide smile, the corners of Gu Yuzhen's lips also curled up.

In the short time that the two shared, the atmosphere was calm, warm, and comforting.

Just as it was about time to get off work, there was a knock on the office door coming from outside.

Gu Yuzhen, who had been standing before the French windows overlooking the entire city, turned around first and saw the door open. A woman dressed in a black uniform entered, holding a document in her hand.

She didn't look at Gu Yuzhen. Placing the document directly on the desk in front of Ming Qu, she said, "President Ming, this is the document that was not signed when the chairman was in office."

Gu Yuzhen walked over, picked up the document, and flipped through it.

The woman looked at him somewhat defensively until Ming Qu spoke up. "You may take your leave now."

Only then did she exit the office with ease.

Once the door was closed behind her, Gu Yuzhen returned the document, cautioning her, "These are all people who used to work for Ming Zhicheng. They may not be reliable if you use them. On another day, I will switch up a new batch for you."

"No need. A large part of the Ming Group was left behind by my grandfather. Some of them can almost be considered as elders of three dynasties of the Ming family. Even as chairman over the last two years, Ming Zhicheng has been unable to buy these people off."

"Oh? In that case, your grandfather must've been a good leader."

"Of course."

Following his praise, Ming Qu, who had been flipping through the document, once again revealed a smile.

The two of them stayed in the office until the sun had set and were just about to leave.

Ming Qu's phone suddenly rang.

She glanced at it. Realising that it was Ming Lai, she had wanted to hang up. However, afraid of missing out on important matters, she hurriedly answered the call behind Gu Yuzhen's back.

Gu Yuzhen, who was waiting at the elevator, had both hands in his pockets as he looked back at her from time to time.

Seeing that she had not finished speaking after quite a while, he walked over directly. As he did, he overheard Ming Qu saying in an irritated tone, "From now on, none of you are allowed to interfere in my matters. I won't just let you all do as you please!"

Gu Yuzhen's footsteps faltered, and his dark brows furrowed unconsciously.

After a long time, Ming Qu finally hung up the phone. Turning around, she found a man full of hostility.

"I need to go back. I'm afraid I won't be able to eat with you today."

Without considering his feelings, she spoke her thoughts.

However, Gu Yuzhen was displeased and refused her promptly. "Since you're going back to the Ming family, I'll go with you. It just so happens that I can meet my in-laws."

"But..."

"Unless you're deliberately hiding something?"

He didn't give her any chance to reject him. Ming Qu had been suppressed by his words, and was unable to counter. She could only reluctantly agree.
