27 Chapter 27: Back on Track

Jack thought that by saving Erskin, he would be alright.

But it turns out he still died.

However, according to Peggy, who brought the news, Erskin was found dead in his home office three days ago. The autopsy and investigation results indicate that he committed suicide!

Why did he commit suicide?

No one knew why he would do such a thing, but Jack had some guesses. It was probably due to the Super Soldier Serum, which was Dr. Erskine's greatest invention and pride.

The flaw in the serum gave birth to the monster known as Red Skull. Erskine knew that the serum strengthened their negative emotions, making them more ruthless.

However, this man was still a super soldier, and ordinary people couldn't do anything against him. After spending some time with him, Jack learned that Erskine was a very pure person; he was just a scientist and a peace-loving one. The original intention of inventing the super soldier serum was to end the continuous years of war.

However, Erskine was caught off guard by the birth of Red Skull and realized the flaw in the super soldier serum. The world would be plunged into an endless war if it couldn't be killed.

Therefore, he had to stop Red Skull, and the best way was to create an equally excellent super soldier! But only one.

He had never thought of creating an army of super soldiers because he knew there were many people like Red Skull. People who suddenly gained power beyond that of ordinary humans rarely had control over their desires.

So, when Erskine learned about Steve's existence, he placed his hope in him. He wanted to create a kind-hearted super soldier to stop the Red Skull!

After that, he would never manufacture any super soldier serum again! Jack knew all of this. He was good at reading people and saw that Erskine was a pure scholar who constantly felt guilty and uneasy about the birth of the Red Skull.

Now, things were different. Captain America was finally born, and Erskine had accomplished his goal. However, he didn't expect that Erskine would use suicide to put an end to the increase of the super soldier serum. Moreover, he had already destroyed all the serum data before his death.

This unexpected result shocked everyone, especially some people in the White House who were reportedly so angry that they were about to flip the table.

Peggy's purpose in coming was simple: to draw blood from Steve. As the only super soldier, he was key to scientists' reverse-engineering of the super soldier serum.

She also planned to take him away from the base. This made Colonel Phillips very angry. He wanted an army, not just one super soldier. However, at this moment, Senator Brandt appeared and requested to borrow Steve.

Phillips didn't object since he thought one super soldier wouldn't make much difference, and Brandt had a presidential order.

That night, Jack returned to the training base after a week of training. The base was now the temporary headquarters of the Strategic Scientific Reserve.

As soon as Jack returned to the training camp without a chance to rest, Colonel Phillips called him.

"Sir, you requested to see me?" Jack knocked on the door and entered Colonel Phillips' office.

Phillips was leisurely drinking coffee, with a hint of anger still noticeable on his face.

"Ah, Captain Wayne, I was wondering when you'd show up." Phillips' expression softened upon seeing Jack, and he looked pleased. "I called you here to let you know that tomorrow, the Strategic Scientific Reserve is heading to London to go head-to-head with those damn nazis! Are you ready, Captain Wayne?"

"Ready and available for duty, sir!" Jack replied without hesitation.

...…

Three months later.

He followed the Strategic Science Corps from London to different European battlefields for three months. He had basically left his mark all over half of Europe.

During this time, he made a name for himself on the battlefield. The Germans knew of a ghost active in battle, specializing in killing their military commanders. Even those who were protected by thousands of soldiers could not escape his deadly grasp.

And every death was the same, a bullet to the forehead, a swift and fatal shot.

What made it even weird was that they never saw him. If it weren't for the bullet casings found at the scene and confirmation from captured enemy soldiers, they would have thought he was a ghost.

As a result, Jack was given the nickname "Ghost of the Battlefield." He didn't particularly like the name, but he didn't have a choice when others called him that.

During the three months, Jack had killed at least ten Green Army officers and even more lower-ranking soldiers. It was said that after learning about Jack's actions, Hitler angrily smashed several of his favorite antiques.

On the other hand, Colonel Phillip was feeling very pleased, as he felt that having Jack on his side gave him a lot of faces. He looked at Jack with kind eyes as if he was his own son.

With his impressive military achievements, he became the second most important person in the Strategic Science Corps, right after Colonel Phillip.

However, there was one thing that bothered him. With his accomplishments, he was eligible to be promoted to a higher rank. Still, despite Phillip's efforts to recommend him, there was no response from the authorities.

Phillip was also aware of this, but there was little he could do. To make up for it, he gave Jack a lot of authority, allowing him to exert the same level of power as a major, even though he still needed to be promoted to that rank.

On one side, things were going great for Jack, while on the other side, Steve was also having a great time.

As a big star promoting war bonds, under the operation of Congressman Brent, he was so popular that he became a well-known American boy in just three months!

Everything related to his comics, movies, toys, and advertisements was selling like crazy. Even on the front lines, Jack could occasionally see Captain America comics.

He traveled all over the United States for three months promoting bonds and did very well. Today, as a goodwill ambassador, he came to the front line in Italy to reward the frontline soldiers. He originally thought he would be warmly welcomed like in the previous three months, but the situation caught him off guard.

Before he could say a few words, the soldiers below stared at him and started shouting.

"Who wants to see you! Get down!"

"Bring up the dancing girls!"

"Hey, Captain America! How about signing here!"

"Hahaha..."

Steve was a bit at a loss. The soldiers mocked him, and even one soldier took off his pants and asked him to sign on his buttocks.

This was different from what he had in mind.
