Chapter 7: I Want to Do Something
"Damn it! Doc, are you really going to pick that boy, Steve Rogers?"
"Yes, I've thought about it seriously. He's irreplaceable."
Colonel Phillips rubbed his head in frustration. "Well, I didn't protest when you added this little man to our team. I assumed you planned to use him as a test subject or something. I didn't expect you to actually pick him."
He glanced at Steve on the training ground, who seemed out of sync with the other soldiers. Disgust was evident in Phillips' eyes. "Look at him—he's so thin. He doesn't have what it takes to be an ordinary soldier. I really don't understand why you chose him."
Pointing to a nearby gun, Thor, who was training with a crawling march, said, "Donald Blake should be the choice. He is the best soldier in this battalion. His physique is the strongest I've ever seen. He's extremely agile and can even climb a smooth flagpole with his bare hands. I have no doubt he could handle a wild leopard."
Dr. Abraham shook his head regretfully. "If Steve weren't here, I might have chosen him. He's certainly impressive, but he's not the person I'm looking for. I'm looking for a good man, not just a good soldier."
He turned to Steve. "What I value more is character beyond physical fitness."
Phillips disagreed. "You don't win wars with kindness. You win wars with courage."
As he spoke, he took a grenade model from a pile of props, pulled the pin, and threw it toward the crowd, shouting, "Watch out for the grenade!"
…
"Colonel Phillips is optimistic about you and wants to recommend you as the top candidate for the Super Soldier Project."
Miss System's voice echoed in Thor's mind.
"That's expected. He's a real soldier; it's strange to see Steve in this light."
Thor replied while crawling forward with his rifle on his shoulder.
"Normal, but it's not good news."
Miss System's tone turned serious. "The Super Soldier Serum will have almost no effect on you. Although your current physical limits are unknown, they are definitely far beyond Captain America's after the experiment. If you are chosen as a test subject, your extraordinary strength will attract attention."
There was a hint of teasing in her voice. "Not to mention, the syringe used for the injection won't even pierce your skin. Or are you planning to keep a low profile?"
Thor responded indifferently. "If Colonel Phillips is optimistic about me, as long as the doctor supports Steve, there's no problem."
The voice in his head became stern. "If you don't want to repeat the mistakes of the original history and end up with nothing, you must understand one thing: Don't assume that the plot you know will be the inevitable future! This timeline has changed since you arrived, and many things will not unfold as you expect. Otherwise, why are you here in 1942 and not in 2011?"
Thor was momentarily speechless, feeling a chill down his spine.
If he relied too much on the familiarity of the plot, wouldn't he be left out in the cold if things changed?
For example, according to the plot, Thanos would snap his fingers in the future. If he were part of the half that disappeared, wouldn't there be no chance for a comeback?
"Perhaps you think that even if things go wrong, you can handle it because they are just mortals. Even if something goes awry, Odin won't let his son perish on Earth. But if you think like that, you'll suffer sooner or later!"
Thor remained silent. Despite the harshness of Miss System's words, he had to admit they were accurate.
He had been treating everything around him as just a novice game.
In this stage of Earth, even with his divine powers sealed, only the Sorcerer Supreme would never attack him. Few others could pose a threat.
And he believed that if his life were in danger, the power of Thor within him would awaken instantly, even against something as powerful as a nuclear bomb.
Captain Marvel's threat wouldn't emerge for another half a century...
But Odin didn't send him to Earth for a vacation.
"Colonel Phillips was convinced by Dr. Abraham not only because of Steve's qualities and the doctor's insistence but also because Hodge, whom he favored, had many bad habits."
Miss System continued. "It's not an exaggeration to say he's a soldier, but you are different. You have none of the unacceptable flaws that Abraham detests, and your physique is far superior to Hodge's. If Phillips is persuaded, what will you do?"
"So, I need to do something to make them think I'm unsuitable?" Thor muttered.
Not far away, a grenade flew...
