Chapter Fourteen: Alamogordo
Nearly a year after arriving in this world, Mjölnir, which had been hidden for 13 chapters, was finally remembered by Thor.
Ah, so I'm still a superhero with a hammer!
Forgotten Mjölnir 😭.
"But I don't recommend you search for the hammer right now."
The young lady advised seriously: "At your current stage, encountering enemies you can't fight is almost impossible. Mjölnir would be just an added advantage, but it could make you overly reliant on its power and neglect your own development."
"You're like a novice player in a game. The current suppression is just to help you become stronger when you break through!"
"Moreover, with your current state, there's a high chance you won't be able to lift the hammer even if it's right in front of you. Odin's seal on you is stronger than in the original timeline. Even your memory is not awakened, making it nearly impossible to gain its approval."
"The most important point is that it's not the Internet age yet, so you can't conduct a global search, can you?"
Thor rolled his eyes helplessly.
He had an intuition that even if he traveled around the world, he might not be able to find Mjölnir if he couldn't sense it. Who knows where Odin might have misplaced it?
Even his own son was thrown into the sea, so a hammer might be tossed into the Mariana Trench...
Well, Mjölnir, you can continue to hide for now.
Definitely, he had to remain vigilant. Although he didn't need it now, he couldn't let others find the hammer.
After all, while there are not many people who can lift Mjölnir, there are still a few—current Captain America, future Black Widow, and my on-again off-again girlfriend...
If we disregard the hammer, the other direction is awakening true divine power.
But that is equally challenging. Without the strong pressure brought by Hela, it's hard to stimulate one's potential, and no one on Earth can push themselves to that limit.
He can't go to Kamar-Taj and just work out, can he? That would be suicide. Without divine power and limited to hand-to-hand combat, encountering a group of melee magic users would be disastrous...
"That means I'm stuck here for now?"
Thor said, feeling very frustrated. Life on the European battlefield was too dull for him. If he had known, he might have preferred the Pacific Ocean, where at least killing sharks could be more entertaining...
This is where things stand.
Looking at the twenty or so Marvel movies, Captain America definitely has one of the largest spans of time before and after. Even without counting the seventy years of ice, it's been three or four years...
It simply felt like these days didn't last too long.
In an act of underestimating the enemy, more than 200 men from the 107th Division fought an unequal battle against HYDRA forces. As a result, some were killed, some escaped, and some were captured.
And Bucky was among those two hundred, but he wasn't among the group that returned...
During this period, in front of the red-eyed Germans, there was not much difference between soldiers being captured and killed in battle.
Prisoner treatment? Nonexistent!
…
That afternoon, Steve's tour arrived at the barracks.
In front of soldiers who had truly experienced the horrors of war, the staged performances with the head of state seemed like child's play—a standard anti-war drama...
Moreover, the leading actor wore the face of a young pretty boy, which made the soldiers express their disdain on the spot.
"Get out of here; we want to see the real heroes!"
Steve never imagined that the first time he used his shield to block something would be to deflect rotten eggs from his own soldiers...
"I feel like a joke, really."
Steve looked lonely and complained.
"I used to think I could kill enemies on the battlefield and fight for the country like other soldiers, so I participated in the experiment. But I didn't expect the success of the experiment to only make me taller and stronger—nothing else has changed."
Thor patted him on the shoulder: "Don't be so down; you've still accomplished a lot. For instance, you've helped people on Wall Street make a lot of money. Shopping malls are like battlefields..."
"Um... are you here to comfort me or to mock me?"
Captain America had a wry smile, with black lines on his forehead. "Perhaps this is already a great outcome. You should know that originally, Colonel Phillips planned to send me to Alamogordo, which is rumored to be another testing ground..."
Alamogordo...
Thor frowned thoughtfully. Steve didn't know what research was being conducted there, not even the next president, until he assumed office.
But Miss System reminded him.
The Manhattan Project!
