The old man opened the back door and politely held it for Lan. He passed through and gave a small bow as he thanked him.
It turned out that it was a small terrace in the backyard. A few tables were laid around on the smooth, freshly cut grass, and surrounded by cushions on dark red mats. Lanterns and candles were lit all around, so it was as bright as it was inside.
They went to sit at the table farther away from the building, and when a waiter approached, the man simply ordered tea for the both of them.
He didn't talk, so Lan didn't either. He wasn't even sure if he was supposed to start the conversation or wait, so he opted for the second option.
When the waiter came back with the tea, Lan reached the pot to serve the two of them. Once he was done, he leaned back and continued to wait.
"Now we can talk !" the old man laughed. "No conversation is a good one if there is no tea to drink !"
Lan gave an awkward small chuckle. "Ah, yes."
