There was no justification for the jealousy I felt toward Nicole. I’d never seen her or Donovan behave inappropriately toward each other. They truly acted like friends, but that never stopped me from imagining them fucking every single time I saw them together.

“Nicole’s going to Hawaii with her sisters next August to celebrate her fortieth birthday,” Donovan had announced when I walked in on them.

“That’s great.”

We’d talked about her trip and she asked when Donovan and I were planning to take a vacation. “You two should go somewhere fun.”

I’d fought to keep myself from saying something sarcastic in response. Donovan and I had never gone on vacation together. Hell, it had been a struggle sometimes to get him to go out in public with me in Chicago. Heaven forbid we’d travel out of state.

“Maybe next year,” he’d told Nicole.
