Chapter 24: Progress

I'd decided to tell Valen about Bethany. I'd decided several days ago when it had happened, but then...I'd stalled.

The truth was, the last couple of days have been…blissful. After my jealous tantrum—I'd finally admitted I'd been jealous—Valen had seemed to soften toward me a lot. Well, maybe soften wasn't the right word. But he'd stopped avoiding me.

Whenever he didn’t leave town on pack business, he rarely left the house. We had dinner together every night. And talked. Mostly I talked, but he didn't once try to stop me. And he even managed to respond to my questions about the pack without me having to carve all the answers out of him.

See? Progress.

Both yesterday and this morning, he'd joined Snow and me on our walks. He was always quiet, but I caught him watching me with a peculiar expression on his face several times. Like I was a puzzle he was trying to solve.

And I knew… I just knew telling him about Bethany would ruin this unspoken truce we'd developed.
