Mother's Support

Lena Grace

New York

The nightmares never ended, those men in the elevator. The beautiful blonde who'd sent me flying across the room, blood in my eye and poor Sophia how she screamed and cried. Her hand of my face and the sound of glass shattering. No! Enough!

I could allow myself to dwell on the memory of that night. Not even of the strange I'd met in the dark.  He haunted me. The man, I saw in the underground parking lot of Sophia's Apartment building, everything was shaking but he appeared unmovable. Grounded amongst the chaos around us. Beautiful and deadly!

I really shouldn't be thinking about this or Sophia's apartment and the horrible things that happened there.  An apartment she was now selling, it was completely unlike her to give into fear but she wasn't alone anymore and just thought of someone coming into her home in the middle of the night once the baby was born, filled me with terror.

And it was that same fear that had kept me in bed these last two days. Rolling over, I snuggle deeper into my pillows when my phone buzz on the night stand.

The text from Sophia had me sitting up.

'I told my mother. You should have seen her face!'

Oh my God! She actually did it.

'I take it, that conversation went as well as can be expected.' I replied back.

'Yes. But it was worth it to see the look on her face.' Sophia said but I knew she was probably really upset.

'I miss you, Lena. How have you been doing lately?' What I really wanted to say was; Horrible, I can seem to get out of bed.

What I texted back was: 'You know me, nothing gets down. Heading off to a yoga class now in fact. Call you later. Love you.'

Coward!

'I'm glad. Have fun! Love you more.'

Sophia Anderson

Beverly Hills

Los Angeles

"Mom, you didn't have to come with me. " My mother did not reply. Charlotte Anderson had never felt the need to explain herself to anyone, not even to me, her pregnant daughter she'd dragged out of bed this morning.

Though she had absolutely no problem with letting me sit and stew in the fact that she had decided to come with me to the doctors appointment she had made. God, only knows when she did that.

It was so out of character for the woman, I was beginning to think she had been replaced by some sort of shape shifting alien. An alien who study my mother's mannerisms and attitude at length and quite well apparently.

Everything about her was exactly the way I remembered it right down to the way she carried herself. Like some kind of Queen!

But this woman could not possibly be my mother. She'd taken the news of my sudden pregnancy way too well. Albeit the look of immense shock on her face was something to behold but that was it, she didn't yell, say hurtful things or judge me. Didn't demand I tell her who the father was. Looking back the whole affair was very strange.

She'd caught me coming out of the kitchen a couple of hours after her so called friends had left. The lecture started the second I put my foot on the stairs, something about my attitude and appropriate dinner educate. The whole experience just made my head hurt even more, so fired back with the one thing I knew would make her shut up. "I'm pregnant."

She froze! Went shock still.

"What?" The confusion and shock on her face was almost hilarious and I would have laughed but I wasn't able to muster the energy for it.

"You heard me, I'm pregnant." I repeated slowly.

It felt good to have that off my chest. I might even sleep better, now.

"Sophia." She whispered into the dimly light space. "You-" Charlotte pressed her fingers to her lips, shook her head and rearranged her facial expression. "We'll talk about this in the morning. You should get some rest." Then she walked away.

Very strange indeed. Maybe she's on drugs?

No, unlikely! Charlotte Anderson was religious in her belief that your body is your temple.

"Stop gaping at me like a fish, Sophia. Is it really so hard to believe I'd accompany you to a doctor's appointment?" She flicked her perfectly curled ash blonde hair over her shoulder and tilted her head to looked at me with those cold blue eyes.

"Are you being serious? You were never there when I got hurt or sick. I don't even think you came to the hospital when I broke by arm in high school." I said turning away in my righteous fury and hoping she didn't see the wounds her neglect had cause.

"Oh, Sophia," She started softly placing a hand on my forearm. "I- "

"Sophia Anderson? Doctor Clark is ready for you now, you can head on in." The nurse at the reception desk called to us. "I'll go with you." She was trying, I could see that but was ready to accept the support she suddenly decided to offer? The answer was no, I still believed that I could do this alone, I would do this alone!

"It fine, you wait here." I said brushing her hand off and ignoring the hurt that pasted through her blue eyes, I stood and followed another nurse into the exam room, where she handed me a red and white hospital gown to change in to before she quietly left the room.

It took a lot to get me to relax, considering my last experience with a medical practitioner. Talia haunted me, with her otherworldly face and cold dead eyes. I seriously wondered if she was even a real doctor. No, don't think about it? Not her and not him!

"Are you feeling alright Sophia, your heart rate just accelerated?" Doctor Clark questioned, she soft smile was comforting. In fact everything about her was, from her dark brown hair to her soft caramel skin, her aura was calming as Lena would say.

"Just a little nervous." I breathed, flinching at the coldness of the liquid base she poured on my stomach.

"All new parent are. Will the father be joining us?" She asked, looking my straight in the eye.

"No, it's just me." Just saying that brought on feelings of resentment and bitterness along with the memory of the stunned stupid look on Lucifer face as we stood in front of that elevator.

"Every well then. You ready to hear your baby's heart beat?" I nodded impatiently. Glad she hadn't pressed me about the Lucifer. From now on I would only think about the health and safety of this baby.

Thump, thump. The that next the sound filled the room was magical. Soft yet loud and fast too, it was completely captivating. So much so that it brought tears to my eyes.

Wow!

"That's amazing." I choked out, Dr Clark smiled widen even more and in her eyes I'm sure she must have seen the kind of mother I could only hope I became.
