1.43 I already have a reason

I gasp a laugh at David’s letter, seamlessly turning it into a cough as I spot Ms. Robbins (my Math teacher) glowering at me. A freshman had scurried inside our classroom earlier in the class, handing me an elegant envelope. I thought it was just a prank at first, so I was debating whether to open it or not. But now I’m glad I did. It turns out to be an invitation to my first date, after all. I can’t help but grin like an idiot.

“From David?” a voice comes from the girl beside me. I don’t know her name. I don’t know most people in this school, actually, despite coming here for almost three months now. But then again, I came here wanting to get out and didn’t pay attention to anything. Until now.

“Yes,” I answer cautiously.

“You know a lot of girls would kill to have that, right?” the girl said. She’s not even looking at me. Her eyes are looking straight in front. “And I heard you would kill for money.”
