Chapter 38: The Verdict

Cyrus banged the cane on the floor several times. “Sit down!” he demanded. “Yes, I said John’s name, but I believe a great miscarriage of justice occurred sixteen years ago.”

“Only if you believe this female who craves the Morgan boy,” Burton said. “John Morgan was caught licking the blood from Layla’s wounds. He’s guilty and always has been.”

“Perhaps not,” Uncle Garrett said. He slowly looked around the room at the others as he spoke. “John Morgan once told me and Cyrus that he found Layla unconscious on the ground.”

“Why must we listen to this fairy tale?” Burton hissed and crossed his arms over his scrawny chest.

Garrett shook his head in disgust before he continued. “John said the sight was horrible, Layla’s face was all but gone. She was bleeding from her many wounds, and the sweet scent of her blood drew him to her side. To his shame, he couldn’t refrain from tasting her blood. But he swore he didn’t harm her.”
