Chapter 21: Triggers

Grey was in danger, and there was nothing I could do to help.

I pushed my plate away and rose from the table. I’d go crazy sitting around waiting for Grey’s safe return.

Going to the sink, I began drawing water to do the dishes. I had to do something, anything to keep my mind from the danger Grey was in.

“I’ll do that, sweetheart,” Aunt Addie said. “You just relax.”

I shook my head. “I’d rather stay busy until Grey gets back.”

My hands shook as I placed dirty plates and cups into the water. Why didn’t Grey wake me and tell me what he was leaving? I didn’t get a last kiss, or even the touch of his hand on mine.

I finished the dishes, wiped down the kitchen, and swept the floor. But Grey still hadn’t returned.

Gathering the full bag from the trash can, I headed for the patio door. I would do the housework today since Lily had her hands full taking care of Ash.

But Uncle Garrett took the bag out of my hands and led me away from the door.
