Chapter 48: Proud of You

Seven o'clock in the evening.

Daisy's house.

Daisy was busy in the kitchen, her graceful figure still apparent even in her pink apron.

"Ding Dong…"

The doorbell rang.

Daisy walked to the door, checked the access control video, breathed a sigh of relief, and opened the door.

Luke stood at the door and took out a bouquet of roses from behind his back. "For you."

"Wow..." Daisy took the roses and inhaled their fragrance. "Thank you, I didn't know you had a romantic side."

"As long as you don't find it old-fashioned."

"No, women always like flowers." Daisy stepped aside. "Come in, dinner will be ready soon."

"Do you need my help?"

"Can you help me set the table?"

"Of course." Luke washed his hands and helped Daisy prepare dinner.

Grilled steak, grilled tuna, vegetable salad, mashed potatoes, mushroom soup, black bread, and red wine.

The two sat on opposite sides of the dining table. Daisy picked up the red wine and said, "Here's to you."

"I should be the one to toast you for preparing such a sumptuous dinner."

They clinked glasses, and Daisy said, "I haven't cooked for a long time. How about trying it?"

Luke cut a piece of steak and took a bite. "It's very tender and tastes good. I like it very much."

While eating, the two chatted about their ideals, hobbies, and some interesting things.

After dinner, Luke took the initiative to wash the dishes. This thoughtful gesture earned him more points in Daisy's heart.

Luke finished the dishes and walked out of the kitchen. Daisy had already prepared a fruit plate and more red wine.

Luke took a wine glass, clinked glasses with Daisy, and took a sip. "Want to talk about the case?"

"Can we talk? I know you have a confidentiality agreement."

Luke quipped, "Not as strict as you lawyers."

Daisy chuckled, "Any progress in the investigation?"

"We re-examined the robber Tim, and he denied his confession and refused to admit that he had any accomplices."

"Why? He doesn't want to turn into a tainted witness?"

"It's hard to say right now, but his attitude is very firm. We can only investigate from other directions."

Daisy pursed her red lips, "Do you need my help?"

"Tomorrow we will go to the hospital where Lawn is staying to investigate and talk to his family. It would be best if we could call the beneficiaries of the will to the hospital."

Daisy nodded. "I'll try my best."

Ome Hospital.

This is a private hospital located in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The environment is beautiful. There are no collective wards, only double rooms, single rooms, and deluxe rooms.

Daisy led Luke and David into the inpatient building.

David looked at the hospital's facilities and said with emotion, "The environment here is better than the hotel I stayed in on vacation."

"Maybe this is the happiness of rich people." Luke smiled and asked Daisy beside him, "Have Lawn's family members arrived?"

"I contacted Lawn's wife and asked her to bring her children to the hospital. I want to talk to them about the will. I believe they will come."

David asked, "How many beneficiaries are there in total?"

"I don't know the specific content of the video will." Daisy led the two to the third floor and stopped at the door of ward 302. "Lawn is in this ward."

Luke whispered to David, "Try to talk less for a while."

David, whose temper could cause trouble, replied, "You don't seem to be a detective yet?"

"It will be soon." Luke followed Daisy into the ward.

The ward is an open room of more than 30 square meters. There is a bathroom on the right side. There are a bed, cupboards, tables, and a TV inside. There is a faint smell of medicine in the ward.

Lying on the hospital bed was a man in his fifties with brown hair, medium build, wearing a light blue spotted hospital gown and an oxygen mask on his face.

A middle-aged woman wearing jewels sat on the left side of the bed, and a woman in her twenties stood on the right side.

A young doctor in a white coat and a stethoscope was standing next to the bed.

Luke read Lawn Bull's profile and learned about his family situation.

Lawn's wife is Caroline Bull, and the two are a remarried couple.

Lawn brought a daughter, Sophia, and Caroline brought a son, Brooke Pierce.

Lawn and Caroline remarried and had a little daughter, Emma.

The jeweled middle-aged woman asked, "Lawyer Daisy, what do you want to talk to us about?"

"Sorry, I didn't explain it clearly on the phone. I'm actually in some trouble and I want to ask you for help." Daisy apologized and pointed to Luke and David.

"This is Detective Luke, and that's Inspector David."

The middle-aged woman frowned slightly and asked, "Daisy, what do you mean by calling the detectives over? You'd better give me a reasonable explanation."

Daisy walked to the bedside and asked with concern, "How is Mr. Lawn's condition? Is he getting better?"

The middle-aged woman answered irrelevantly, "Please don't change the subject."

Daisy sighed softly, "Since Mr. Lawn was hospitalized, I have also encountered some bad things during this period of time. On March 2, someone broke into my office and stole documents. On March 3, I was robbed on the street. On March 15, someone broke into my home and installed surveillance cameras in the study to take secret photos. I called the police, and they think it might be related to Mr. Lawn's will, so they'd like you to come over and have a chat."

The young woman showed a surprised look, "Oh my god, are you serious? This is too scary."

"Ms. Sophia, these two are detectives from the Robbery and Murder Division. They can prove what I said."

Luke asked, "Miss Sophia, are you Mr. Lawn's eldest daughter?"

"Yes." Sophia responded and pointed to the middle-aged woman and the man in the white coat and said, "This is my stepmother Caroline, and Brooke."

Luke looked at Brooke, "Are you a doctor in this hospital?"

Before Brooke could answer, her mother Caroline said proudly, "My son is a resident doctor at this hospital and my husband's attending physician. Thanks to him...Lawn's condition has improved."

Luke asked, "How is Mr. Lawn? What's wrong with him?"

Brooke replied, "The lack of oxygen to the brain caused the coma. After fainting, he fell and injured his head. The brain stem was damaged to a certain extent and he is in a coma. The situation is quite tricky."

Luke offered, "Can I see the diagnostic report?"

Brooke was stunned for a moment, "Sorry, this concerns the patient's privacy."

Luke looked at Sophia beside him and said, "I heard that your father left a video will. Can I see it?"

Without waiting for Sophia to answer, stepmother Caroline refused, "No, that is a very private thing. It is Lawn's farewell to his family. What right do you have to ask for that?"

Luke said, "It's not a request, just a chat."

"We have nothing to talk about." Caroline said to Daisy beside her, "Lawyer, please take these two detectives away. Also, please respect your profession. If you reveal my husband's other will to the police, I will sue you."

"I won't show it to anyone without Mr. Lawn's permission. I'm sorry that I've caused you trouble because of my personal reasons." Daisy said, looking at Luke beside her. "Let's go."

After leaving the ward, David said calmly, "I didn't say anything."

Luke put his arm around David's shoulders, "I'm proud of you."

David raised his middle finger and said, "Are you planning to leave like this?"

"So what's your idea?"

"Come with me." David walked to the triage desk and asked a female nurse, "Excuse me, which floor is the dean's office on?"

The nurse asked, "What can I do for you?"

David flashed his badge.

"The easternmost side of the 5th floor."

"Thank you." David said and took the elevator to the fifth floor.

Daisy stood beside Luke and asked softly, "Does your colleague know the dean?"

Luke had mixed feelings, "We got to know each other pretty quickly."
