Chapter 53

“You’re in love with her, aren’t you?” he asked.

Maggie looked at him sadly and nodded. “And I feel like I’ve deserted her,” she said softly. “I once told her that if I ever decided I was a lesbian, she’d be the first to know, but she’s not here now. Douglas figured it out before I did.”

Pauly nodded. It made sense.

“I wondered what had happened with Douglas. He was a sweet guy,” Pauly acknowledged.

“Yes, he was,” Maggie agreed. “I failed in that relationship, too, just like I did with my marriage. My marriage only lasted four years. The relationship with Douglas lasted over ten, so I must have learned something.”

They sat in silence for a moment, both lost in their own thoughts.

Finally, Maggie broke the silence. “This isn’t getting us anywhere. If we don’t come up with something soon, I’m going to have to pull both of us off this case. We’re both too emotionally involved. We may be too close to see what’s there.”
