“Maggie, we’ve been over and over this for, what, ten…twelve years? Every time it looks like we’re getting closer, something comes up with Cameron Andrews and off you go!”

“I was…I amher supervisor, Douglas,” Maggie said defensively.

“Her supervisor, her next of kin, her advisor. What other names should we give it? Her.…Herwife?”

Maggie stared at him. His frustration had finally run over. What could she say to him?

“I was never her lover,” was all she could think to say. Come on, Maggie, she thought, say the right thing. Smooth this down. Don’t let it get out of hand.

“You sure had a lot of people fooled. I always marveled at how well you looked after her, as though you were her wife…or lover. You played that role very well. But it wasn’t just a role, was it?” There, he’d said it.

There was silence.
