For the gray whale trapped in the tiny ice hole, surfacing into the ship's path felt like striking it rich; the cramped space it had been confined to suddenly seemed vast and expansive.
Breathing became much easier. Previously, the gray whales had to fluctuate vertically in the ice hole, sticking their whole heads out just for a brief breath.
Now, they only needed a short ascent in the horizontal direction, expose their blowholes to take deep breaths with ease, almost as if they were back in the open sea.
The only thing to watch out for was to keep the whales from getting too close to the stern, as it could injure them.
