After Percy was claimed, he got alienated out of fear only Annabeth and Kurayami's group for company. Kurayami felt it would be easier to poach him for Grigori than he thought if he got lonely enough.
As for Clarise, she still looked like she would break his neck which was better than being alone. He and Kurayami's group were called to Dyonisus and Chiron. The god spoke up without even bothering to look up.
"Well, well, our little celebrity and his hero. The tamer of hellhounds."
With sarcasm all too obvious. It kind of reminded Kurayami of a teenage girl.
"Come closer, And don't expect me to kowtow to you, just because old Barnacle-Beard is your father."
A net of lightning flashed across the clouds. Thunder shook the windows of the house. However, Dionysus cared little what his uncle thought. Chiron feigned interest in his pinochle cards. Grover cowered by the railing, his hooves clopping back and forth.
"If I had my way I would cause your molecules to erupt in flames. We'd sweep up the ashes and be done with a lot of trouble. But Chiron seems to feel this would be against my mission at this cursed camp: to keep you little brats safe from harm."
"Spontaneous combustion is a form of harm, Mr. D," Chiron explained.
"Nonsense, He'd be dead before he knew what happened Nevertheless, I've agreed to restrain myself. I'm thinking of turning you into a dolphin instead, sending you back to your father."
Kurayami nodded as it felt fair.
"Seems fair, his father is the god of the seas so him turning into a dolphin is not too bad."
Percy shivered at the words as it seemed Kurayami was more than ready to let him be turned into a dolphin.
Dionysus nodded.
"At least someone gets it. Still, there's one more option."
Dionysus rose, and the invisible players' cards dropped to the table.
"I'm off to Olympus for the emergency meeting. If the boy is still here when I get back, I'll turn him into an Atlantic bottlenose. Do you understand? And you five go with him. Got enough trouble with the campers knowing about your Pantheon.
Now kids are asking about the Bible, God, and Jesus and if they will go to Heaven or Hell. More headaches for me than are worth."
Dionysus picked up a playing card, twisted it, and it became a security pass. He snapped his fingers. The air seemed to fold and bend around him. He became a hologram, then a wind, then he was gone, leaving only the smell of fresh-pressed grapes lingering behind.
Chiron smiled at them, but he looked tired and strained.
"Sit, Percy, please. You all should hear this as well."
Kurayami and his group sat down as well. The hellhound was being kept watch by Tyrant and Ulrik, so he was left behind.
"Tell me, Percy, what did you make of the hellhound?"
He looked at Kurayami who was training it for a pet, but it didn't change what happened.
"It scared me, If Kurayami hadn't caught it I'd be dead."
Chiron nodded, but he sighed.
"You'll meet worse, Percy. Far worse, before you're done."
Percy was confused.
"Done…with what?"
Chiron explained.
"Your quest, of course. Will you accept it?"
Percy knew not to accept something without knowing.
"Um, sir, you haven't told me what it is yet. What quest?"
Chiron grimaced.
"Well, that's the hard part, the details."
Thunder rumbled across the valley. The storm clouds had now reached the edge of the beach. As far as they could see, the sky and the sea were boiling together. Percy knew what was going on so he said it.
"Poseidon and Zeus, They're fighting over the Master Bolt right?"
Chiron nodded.
"Exactly. Hera and Poseidon were having talks with Grigori for a trade agreement, but this issue caused trouble. Instead, they hired agents to come settle the issue for them.
They do not want to piss off other Pantheons, namely the Hindu Patheon."
The sky rumbled in anger, but it was true. No one wanted to be on the receiving end of the strongest pantheon in this world. Percy also explained his point of view. As he had been having these dreams.
Where he saw a Horse and Eagle fighting like a bunch of kids. Grover spoke up which gave him a bunch of glares.
"It's his destiny."
Hearing that foul word made Kurayami, Akeno, Raynare, Esdeath, and Kuroka all glare at him with looks that could kill. They hated the word destiny as it made it seem that nothing they did was under their control.
Kurayami and Kuroka did not want to believe that they were destined to suffer. Esdeath did not want to believe her choosing her decisions were not hers, but a game of fate.
Raynare also did not want to believe that her parents died because destiny desired her to kill them. Grover had never felt so much danger as he did in that one moment.
However, they calmed down soon after as it was unbecoming to get mad at a fool. Grover himself fell to his knees, but at the same time, his eyes were bright with excitement.
"Sorry."
Chiron sighed as he looked at him.
"Only the Oracle can determine. Nevertheless, Percy, you are correct. Your father and Zeus are having their worst quarrel in centuries. over the theft of the Master Bolt. It's a two-foot-long cylinder of high-grade celestial bronze, capped on both ends with god-level explosives."
Chiron said, getting worked up now. Thinking of that weapon forged for Zeus himself.
"The symbol of his power, from which he claims all other lightning bolts are patterned. The first weapon made by the Cyclopes for the war against the Titans, the bolt that sheered the top off Mount Etna and hurled Kronos from his throne; The Master Bolt, which packs enough power to make mortal hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers."
Kurayami clapped bringing his bubble down.
"That's good and all, but don't let the other gods hear you saying all lightning comes from it. You know who will not take kindly to his authority being called less than? Even Gunginir is a weapon equal in power to it. Also my Incinerate Anthem is just as powerful."
Chiron sighed but nodded.
"That is all propaganda by the Greek gods, so their children respect them. That thing still packs enough power to level entire countries if the owner desired."
Percy asked the real question.
"By who?"
Chiron looked at Percy and pointed at him.
"By you."
Percy's mouth went slack-jawed.
Chiron held his hand up.
"At least that's what Zeus thinks. During the winter solstice, at the last council of the gods, Zeus and Poseidon argued. The usual nonsense:' 'Air disasters are more spectacular than sea disasters,' et cetera. Afterward, Zeus realized his Master Bolt was missing, taken from the throne room under his very nose. He immediately blamed Poseidon."
Percy heard that and said the obvious realization.
"They act like children."
The sky ripped with lightning and Chiron looked at Percy with a warning look.
"It may be so, but do not disrespect the gods or you may be killed, Kurayami is an exception. He has the power to be confident against them." Now, a god cannot usurp another god's symbol of power directly—that is forbidden by the most ancient of divine laws. But Zeus believes your father convinced a human hero to take it."
Percy knew he didn't do it.
"Then who?"
"That is the question. Zeus has good reason to be suspicious. The forges of the Cyclopes are under the ocean, which gives Poseidon some influence over the makers of his brother's lightning."
Esdeath spoke up as she understood what kind of advantage that gives Poseidon.
"Some of the best forge masters are under the domain of Poseidon which gives him great influence over what is made. That is a big advantage to any fight."
Chiron nodded.
"You are correct, child. He believes that Poseidon is arming his army to topple Zeus from his throne. The only thing Zeus wasn't sure about was which hero Poseidon used to steal the bolt. Now Poseidon has openly claimed you as his son. You were in New York over the winter holidays. You could easily have snuck into Olympus."
Percy knew he didn't as he did not even know where that was.
"But I've never even been to Olympus! Zeus is crazy!"
Everyone who was not Kurayami and his group looked at nearvously at the sky. The clouds didn't seem to be parting around the camp, as Grover had promised. They were rolling straight over the valley.
Kurayami looked at him and nodded in respect.
"Seems you got balls of steel. I agree that Zeus is a prick, but be careful who you insult."
"Perhaps paranoid, Then again, Poseidon has tried to unseat Zeus before."
He looked at Percy as if he expected him to remember. Chiron was waiting for an answer.
"Something about a golden net? Poseidon and Hera and a few other gods…they, like, trapped Zeus and wouldn't let him out until he promised to be a better ruler, right? Made him promise under the River Styx?"
Chiron nodded.
"Correct, and Zeus has never trusted Poseidon since. Of course, Poseidon denies stealing the master bolt. He took great offense at the accusation. The two have been arguing back and forth for months, threatening war. And now, you've come along."
Percy still didn't accept he was responsible.
"My dad didn't have this master bolt stolen, did he?"
Chiron sighed.
"Most thinking observers would agree that thievery is not Poseidon's style. But the Sea God is too proud to try convincing Zeus of that. Why would the victim bother when he is innocent."
"As such Zeus has demanded that Poseidon return the bolt by the summer solstice. That's June twenty-first, 12 days from now. Poseidon wants an apology for being called a thief by the same date. I hoped that diplomacy might prevail, that Hera or Demeter or Hestia would make the two brothers see sense. But your arrival has inflamed Zeus's temper. Now neither god will back down."
Esdeath popped her knuckles as she was actually considering letting the war break out. It brought out her inner battle drive, but it was not time. She scoffed as she looked at Percy.
"The only way is the master bolt is found and returned to Zeus before the solstice, there will be war. And do you know what a full-fledged war would look like, Percy?"
"Bad?"
Kurayami's eyes glowed in a small bit of excitement as he explained further.
"If something goes wrong it won't just be the Greeks. You will drag in all Pantheons and it will be Ragnarock, Armageddon, Doomsday all in one. The world turned into a battleground so big it would make World War 2 look like a bar fight. How much fun it would be."
Chiron looked at Percy with pity.
"And you, Percy Jackson, would be the first to feel Zeus's wrath. He will stop at nothing to get it back."
Percy smashed his fist on the table as he was truly mad.
"So I have to find the stupid bolt, and return it to Zeus."
Chiron scoffed at the idea.
"What better peace offering, than to have the son of Poseidon return Zeus's property?"
Raynare asked the important question.
"If Poseidon doesn't have it, where is the thing? Unless old king of rapists gets it back, things will turn into Kurayami's soul buffet."
Percy and Grover turned to Kurayami, more importantly, the two living swords he had. Both of them were soul-devouring and within had hungry souls.
"Let's avoid that, shall we? Part of a prophecy I had years ago…well, some of the lines make sense to me, now. You must seek the counsel of the Oracle before I can say more go upstairs, Percy Jackson, to the attic. When you come back down, assuming you're still sane, we will talk more."
Kurayami waved him off.
"Go already."
Percy went up the stairs into the attic. When he entered, he saw sitting on a wooden tripod stool by the window a mummy. Not the wrapped-in-cloth kind, but a human female body shriveled to a husk. She wore a headband over her long black hair. The skin of her face was thin and leathery over her skull, and her eyes were glassy white slits as if the real eyes had been replaced by marbles.
Looking at her sent chills through his back and that was before she sat up on her stool and opened her mouth. A green mist poured from the mummy's mouth, coiling over the floor in thick tendrils, hissing like thousands of snakes. Percy nearly ran out, but the trapdoor closed on him. Inside his head, he heard a voice, slithering into one ear and coiling around his brain.
"I am the spirit of Delphi, speaker of the prophecies of Phoebus Apollo, slayer of the mighty Python. Approach, seeker, and ask."
He just wanted to run, but he had to know. The green mist was scary but its presence didn't feel evil. It felt more like the Three Fates he saw knitting the yarn outside the highway fruit stand: ancient, powerful, and not human.
"What is my destiny?"
The mist swirled more thickly, collecting right in front of him and around the table with the pickled monster-part jars. Suddenly four men were sitting around the table, playing cards. Their faces became clearer. It was his stepfather and his buddies.
He turned toward Percy and spoke in the rasping voice of the Oracle
"You shall go west, and face the god who has turned."
His buddy on the right looked up and said in the same voice
"You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned."
The guy on the left threw in two poker chips, then said
"You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend."
The mist retreated, coiling into a huge green serpent and slithering back into the mouth of the mummy.
"Wait! What do you mean? What friend?"
The tail of the mist snake disappeared into the mummy's mouth and the ordinance with the Oracle was over
