Chapter 15, The Soviet Connection

Feel water on my skin felt great I almost forgot what a shower truly felt like, the water burned my skin which help loosen my tight joints.

I scrubbed myself roughly to get the smell of smoke, iron and the stains of blood off. After finishing I stepped out grabbing my uniform and headed out to my unit.

After the event I went through, Sarge wanted to get me discharged with honors and all but I refused stating my service isn't over yet. After I told him what me and Bucky saw which we believe to be a Soviet C.O, me and Sarge have to report to Command.

We stood in front of high ranking Officials, me and Gillan were in parade rest as one of the Officials spoke.

"At ease, Corporal Anthony Tobias you said during the retaking of the city you and a Private Bucky Wells killed a Soviet Tank Commander?"

"Yes Sir, he didn't look to be Vietnamese or any form of Asian but full bloodied European I even doubt if he was American" I said.

"Hmm even with the Department of Defense we're unclear whether Soviet Troops are among the North Vietnamese...So Sergeant Gillan" Gillian stepped forward.

"Your unit of MACVSOG Golf 1 have done greater then I've seen through my eighteen years of service I'm promoting you to Staff Sergeant congratulations...Gentleman we are issuing a highly classified mission your mission is still the same in Vietnam however this will also be apart of your current objectives this mission is to learn of any Soviet involvement we know their supplying NVA with weapons and training but we need to learn of any troops"

"Rules of engagement upon any Soviet Troops?" I asked, "Have you been doing when you face Charlie?" He asked.

"Sir" I saluted which Gillian did the same as Command dismissed us.

We went back to the rest of our group as I gave the news of Gillan new rank, we celebrate I actually take in some alcohol for a bit before returning to water and cola.

I was still a Corporal but I knew eventually my buddies Paul, Kyle, Bucky, Marshall and Scully would be promoted to higher ranks.

Paul gain the rank of an E-4 Specialist, Scully was a Corporal like me, Bucky an E-4, Bucky a Specialist, Kyle Private First Class and Marshall a normal Private.

We were being sent on a covert operation in North Vietnam, our mission was to kill a high ranking Officer and search for any Soviet involvement in Vietnam.

We were getting ready til Chau came up to me I looked at her, "I'm Pregnant" She says I just stared at her "I..I'm becoming a dad..."

"Well done there Corporal you done dug yourself a hole" Gillan said jokingly, I held Chau as I spin as she started laughing.

I took out some money and a letter address to my family as I handed it to Chau, "Chau take this and go to America okay this letter is address to my family tell them I sent you they'll take care of you til I come back"

"Anthony" She said looking at me as we shared one final kiss before I stepped on the portal boat. As the boat leaves the base I wave to her and shout "Write to me when you reach America Chau! I will come back!"

"Congrats on your baby" Scully said as I simply nodded and sat down and close my eyes with a smile.

We drove up to the Gulf of Token under the cover of night til we hit a shore, using leaves and tree branches to hide our boat.

Our faces were painted dark green and our uniforms were nearly the same color as our faces, Bucky since he was a sniper he was wearing a Ghillie Suit.

Stepping into North Vietnam felt like we're stepping into a dog house a very angry dog house. The NVA or Charlie will kill us or even torture us.

"Corporal" Gillan called for me then asked "Back in the city you were surrounded by dead NVA do you remember anything?"

"No sir my vision went dark then I remember seeing you guys staring at me" I said, Gillan said nothing after that as we kept moving through the jungle.

"Hold" Gillan stopped us as we slowly crept up to a small base camp, looking through binoculars it had a group of NVA and some other Non Vietnamese men.

Gillan looked through then said "Speztnaz" "Spetsnaz?" Kyle questioned.

"Russian Special Forces their the answer to our Green Berets...Men we're about to fighting our Russian counterparts...Bucky get your rifle ready on the officer he maybe our target"

"Paul get your Machine Gun ready to spray some hurt, everyone else with me" Gillan said as we slowly snuck up onto the camp.

We hide behind some trees as I held my rifle ready then once I heard Bucky's rifle crack and the Officer dropped we open fire.

NVA and Spetsnaz were taken by surprise, I actually dropped one Spetsnaz it was different from killing a NVA.

One of the Spetsnaz ran for his rifle til Kyle unloaded a clip into him. The firefight went on for a couple minutes before Gillan order for a cease fire.

We walked up checking for any stragglers, I entered a tent and grabbed some papers which I couldn't read.

It clearly wasn't Vietnamese it was Russian I believe, Gillian flipped the Officer over and checked a picture "Not him just some unlucky bastard...Radio" He grabbed the Radio from Marshall.

"Command this is Golf 1, we countered a camp which had Russian Special Forces we taken out a Officer whose not the target but we found some papers that look to be important"

"Copy that Golf 1 keep the mission up and return to base when finished, happy hunting" Command said as Marshall took the radio back.

"Sir what happens if United States learned about actual about Soviet troops in Nam?" Kyle asked, "Then we could be facing a full fledge war so boys if we encounter anymore Spetsnaz or whatever take them out we can't risk being discover here" Gillan said as we nodded and continue our search into the jungle while the moon shined above us.
