Chapter 2

Yeah, I’ve got a new cellmate. Eddie Byrnes. Armed robbery. Weedy kid with tatts. He talks tough, but I reckon it’s all for show. He was mouthing off to Taylor in the showers, so Taylor got one of his heavies to distract the screw on duty while he got Byrnes up against the wall. Gave him something to think about. He’s as quiet as a mouse now.

What are you going to do to Gregson? I don’t want you getting into any trouble. If we keep our noses clean we can be out of here in a couple of years. Be together all the time, the way we used to talk about. I tell you what, sometimes the thought of us being together on the outside, waking up with you in bed next to me, is the one thing that gets me through the day.

What do you reckon about Lanky? Is he reading our letters? I asked him straight out and he swore he wasn’t. I was watching his face the whole time and I think he’s cool. What do you reckon?

You’ll find out what I’ve got planned for Gregson, if you haven’t already. He should’ve thought about what he was doing when he transferred me. He knew we were together. What we were doing. He was just being a prick and now he’s going to pay. But don’t worry, babe. I’m keeping right out of it. I called in a couple of favours and threw in a few packets of smokes to sweeten the deal. I plan to get out exactly when they say I can get out. I want to be with you more than anything.

As for Lanky. I agree with you. I don’t think he’s reading anything. Don’t think he knows how. Hahaha. I told him what would happen if I even suspected he was reading our letters. I reckon he can be trusted.

Kids like that Byrnes bloke you’ve got in with you either learn fast or go down. He doesn’t sound like your sort so that makes me feel better. I know you wouldn’t do anything, but sometimes my mind can really mess me around. It would kill me if I found out you were fooling around with anyone else. You’re so much in my head and in my heart.

Remember I told you about my cellmate, Henderson? Well, he made a move on me last night. McDonald was already in bed. I was getting undressed and Henderson reached down and grabbed my cock. He wrapped his other arm around me and asked me to fuck him. He tried to kiss me, but I pushed him away before his lips got anywhere near mine. I told him if he tried anything like that again, he’d end up in the infirmary. Poor bastard didn’t stand a chance. Not least because he’s hung like a fucking field mouse. After lights-out I took advantage of McDonald’s nightly party-for-one to have one of my own. I was thinking about the last time we were together and I blew almost straight away.

Man, Gregson got it really good. It happened so fast that none of us are even sure who did it. But there was blood everywhere and we’re all in lockdown here. They’ve been going through our cells, looking for the weapon. They haven’t found anything. Don’t know if Gregson is alive or dead. It’s hard to say, but I’ve never seen so much blood. It took three blokes forever to clean it up.

Byrnes has settled down a lot. He won’t go anywhere near Taylor. Poor kid. I guess lockdown is a blessing of sorts for him. He’s had a shit life. His dad was a bit of a boozer. He used to come home drunk as a bastard and lay into him. Or his mother. Then one day, he got home from school and his mother had taken off. All her stuff was gone. No note or anything. He never heard from her again. So he didn’t have anyone to look after him. Took care of himself. One night his dad really laid into him, beating him black and blue. That was it. He ran away and never went back again. He was living on the streets, fell in with the wrong crowd and, blah blah blah, ended up here. No different to a lot of people, I know. It’s just sad, that’s all.

Anyway, I couldn’t sleep last night, so I got up and, for some reason, I went to the window. I looked at the full moon. Just stared at it. I wondered who else was looking at the moon at that exact time. I wondered where they were and what their lives were like. I wondered if you could see the moon through your window. Then I got to thinking about the first time we met. Remember? The screws brought me in and you were lying on your bunk. You had your sleeves rolled up as high as they’d go over your muscles. You hadn’t shaved and you looked so fucking sexy with your black hair slicked back over your head. And when you got off your bunk and I could see your eyes properly, they were the bluest eyes I’d ever seen. I got a hard-on.
