The morning sun broke over Rome, casting its golden light across the sprawling city. Streets bustled with activity as the last days of Lupercalia continued to be prepared. But beneath the lively surface, tension hung in the air like a brewing storm. Whispers of uncertainty and discontent passed from ear to ear, though no one dared speak openly against Caesar. Not yet.
Leo stood in the Forum, his eyes sweeping across the crowd. Merchants hawked their goods, philosophers debated animatedly, and the occasional patrician strolled by, exuding an air of superiority. He should have felt at ease in such a vibrant atmosphere, but his mind was consumed with the subtle war he had waged in Brutus's garden the night before.
His system interface materialized before his eyes, semi-transparent to avoid drawing attention. The updated stats caught his attention, and a small smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.

His new allocation of skill points had paid off, and the extra influence in the Senate might just be enough to make the difference for him in the days to come. Yet, so much still lay shrouded to him in this strange system and how it connected with the events unfolding. Was this guiding him? Testing him? Or something else again?
A voice cut through his thoughts as he sat there. "Leo, you look deep in thought. Plotting something grand?"
Leo turned to see Antony walking towards him, confident in every step. The man had a way of commanding attention without effort, each step calculated yet natural.
"Just observing," Leo replied with a shrug. "The streets of Rome tell a thousand stories if you are willing to listen."
Antony chuckled. "Indeed. But I'd wager the most interesting stories are being written in shadows, not in the open." His eyes gleamed, a knowing look that suggested he was well aware of Leo's late-night conversation with Brutus.
A commotion outside the Senate steps drew Leo's attention before he could even respond. A small crowd had assembled, murmurs rippling through them like a restless tide. In the middle stood Cassius, his face red with poorly concealed rage as he barked orders at a young scribe.
Leo's stomach tightened. "What is he doing?"
Antony frowned. "Stirring trouble, most likely. He thrives on chaos, doesn't he?"
As they approached, Cassius saw them and dismissed the scribe at once. His face grew darker still at the sight of Antony, but his expression changed to a false cordiality when he caught sight of Leo.
"Ah, Leo," Cassius said, his voice dripping with insincerity. "How fortunate to see you here. I trust you've been enjoying our fine city?"
Leo smiled. "Rome is nothing short of magnificent."
Cassius's eyes narrowed ever so slightly, suspicion flickering across his gaze. "Yes, magnificent. But even the most magnificent structures can crumble when their foundations are weak."
It was a thinly veiled jab, and Antony bristled beside him. But Leo remained calm, tilting his head as if considering the statement. "True, but weak foundations can be reinforced. It's the unseen termites that pose the greatest threat."
The corner of Cassius's mouth twitched, his smile faltering. "A poetic observation. Perhaps you should consider a career in oration."
Antony stepped forward, his presence immediately shifting the dynamic. "And you, Cassius, might consider a career in subtlety. Your attempts at veiled threats are about as effective as a dull blade."
Cassius's eyes flashed, and for a moment, it seemed as though he might retort. But instead, he forced a laugh, though it held no humor. "Ah, Antony, always the loyalist. But loyalty is a dangerous trait when given to the wrong man."
"Dangerous for whom?" Antony shot back, his voice sharp. "The loyal, or those who would betray them?"
The tension crackled between them, and for a moment, Leo thought Cassius might snap. But then, with a curt nod, Cassius turned and strode away, his movements stiff with barely contained anger.
Leo exhaled, shaking his head. "He's going to make his move soon."
Antony nodded grimly. "And we must be ready. Keep your wits about you, Leo. This is a game where one misstep could cost you everything."
As Antony walked away, Leo's system chimed again; the notification pulled his attention back.
