Chapter 40: Back Home

ABIGAIL’S POV

My knee wouldn’t stop bouncing and I couldn’t stop picking at my nails, as John drove us back to Heber. I didn’t want to go home, and I had already gone through two breakdowns before we had gotten me into the car.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe, and my throat felt like it was swollen shut. My stomach was doing somersaults and my heart was hitting against my ribs so hard that I couldn’t even focus. Everything around me was fuzzy and all I could see what the road in front of us, as my thoughts looped and swirled through my head.

What was he going to do when he found me? Would he find me fast? Would I have to talk to him? I didn’t WANT to talk to him. What if he hurt my family? What if he hurt John? What if—what if—what if—

My mind was a wasteland of negative thoughts and endless questions, and I was wandering through it and getting scratched and grabbed by whispering willow branches. Roots jutted up out of the ground to grab my ankles so that I couldn’t run.
