The Love of My Life

Andrew and I have been dating for the past four years. It all started when he bumped into me during the last year of high school, which made my books fall off. We fell in love and started dating before we graduated from high school. We both then told our parents about it, as we were both planning to stay together till the very end. The reactions of our parents were unexpected. The meeting was going well until they asked for our surnames. Both sides insisted we broke up. We both did not agree and acted like we had broken up in their presence and dated in secret.

It went on for months. We luckily gained admission to the same university. Of course, without our parents knowing. Our love continued to grow each day. We tried our luck again by telling our parents during our second year at the university. We got even worse reactions that time, as my parents ensured I got transferred to another university and stayed off campus to prevent every means of meeting physically. You will figure out ways to make things work when you're in love. It was the case for Andrew and me. We continued dating till our fourth year when we decided I should get pregnant so our parents would end up with no choice but to let us get married to each other.

We graduated from our respective universities. I was one month gone at that moment. A week after our graduation, we met our parents again. This time, they gave us the shocker of our lives. They insisted I aborted the pregnancy. We then knew that the mutual hatred between both families was not because our fathers were business rivals, nor because our mothers were never thinking the same way. There was another reason aside from those two that we knew. We pestered them till they told us it was a generational curse; the families wouldn't end up well if they ever got together.

To hell with the superstition, Andrew and I eloped to another city, cutting off all ties with our families. We were happily in love and everything was going well for us. Four months into the marriage, I became uncomfortable with Andrew and could swear that he felt the same. I lost the pregnancy, which was five months old, while trying to avoid sleeping too close to Andrew on the bed as my irritation for him grew. I rolled off the bed, falling on my tummy. It then became glaring that our parents were right. We both figured out we were both not compatible. Every one of his acts annoyed me and vice versa. We both went our separate ways after realising we were both never really meant to be.

"Nahhhhh!" I laughed out loud. If Daniel hadn't messed up. We wouldn't have ended up that way. Our parents were great friends, which makes this whole breakup thing sort of messy.

A lesson from that story, though. If you are getting warnings from your parents. Take your time and check if you're being warned out of love. You can never be too sure. Andrew and his love might not have had to waste those years they spent together if they had listened to their parents.

"Well, it's over now," I said, thinking about Daniel. I picked up the picture frame on my reading table. It was a picture of my junior high classmates and me.

Oh! Isn't that Kelvin?! We all referred to Kelvin as the dumbest kid in the class. It is funny how I feel I should I write a story related to this.
