Chapter 12: Conquering The World (Part 2)

( Author's Note: This chapter is full of horror and disturbing stuff. Please don't read it if you cannot stand such things . This is not some challenge. I will not be again writing chapters like this for some time. I will write a note of this kind every time, I post such chapters. So, there is no need to drop this novel.)

O'Connell , " The possibility of presence of mystical items in that tomb."

Alexander, " Why would this require such heavy military presence?"

Eve sighed, " Your majesty, how much you know about our world?"

Alexander thought, "Looks like this world is different from the one shown in movies." Alexander then said, " I don't know much. But I know that a massive war between countries of your world has just ended last year."

Eve continued, " Yes, your majesty. The world war has just ended last year. In this war, mystic items of ancient civilizations were used to cause mass destruction and slaughter by both sides of the war."

Alexander thought, " This world is very different from the one I know. My invasion plan now has to change. I had thought that I am the most powerful person on this planet but the presence of mystic items now changes everything. I would have to revise my plans." Alexander then asked Eve, " How were they found out? Such items are usually hidden in secret places."

O'Connell said, " Because of Hitler. He was the leader of Germany in this war. Hitler was a firm believer that the various mystical items were real and were hidden around the world. Unfortunately, he was right. Hitler after taking over Germany, led the formation of a secret department whose only aim was to find the ancient mystical items. All the officials of Hitler who knew about this, were of the opinion that this department was a lost cause. But this department found a clue to a powerful ancient weapon hidden in Poland. They sent various German spies to search the whole Poland. This large and frantic movement of Germans drew the attention of Polish government. They sent their own men to find the reason for this movement but were unfortunately unsuccessful in uncovering their aims. One thing was common in all the spies,they were unusually loyal to their cause."

Alexander, " What happened next? Did they did it?"

O'Connell, "The artifact they were searching for was below the Poland's capital. Hitler excited that he had finally found a mystical artifact couldn't wait to get his hands on it. But the Polish government was trying their best to interfere and stop the movements of Germans in their country but ultimately failed. Hitler launched an invasion and conquered Poland in only 20 days after getting the artifact."

Alexander, " What was this artifact? How did you came to know about this so much?"

Eve replied, " We don't know about the artifact. But we know that when Britain and France declared war against Germany for invading Poland and send their armies for liberation of Poland, they suffered heavy losses due to plagues, diseases even before reaching the German Armies. When after reaching the now subjugated Polish Land, they found all the villages and towns deserted. The army officials had thought that some people had ran away in the forests to save their lives while others were captured by Germans to use as hostages. But, when they reached the major cities, they found them also empty. The army stopped it's advance and reported the situation their supriors. The orders were to slow down the advance and send a vanguard to examine the situation. They send 50 soldiers in groups of five in different directions as they did not know where the Germans were currently present."

Alexander thought, " The invasion of Poland took 35 days to get completed with the combined efforts of Germany and Russia in my previous life. This world is very different and dangerous. I will not anymore underestimate any worlds even if I remember about them better than my own life."

Eve stopped and took a deep breadth and said, " None of them returned. Another 2 batches were send but didn't got any results. After 5 days of sending the last batch, the scouts found a soldier send in vanguard stumbling towards the campsite, his body was full of bite marks. He was immediately brought back and the story he told was so full of horror that they were never written in official records."

Alexander asked, " What had happened?"

O'Connell continued, " The soldier said that they passed a field covered in bodies at a distance of 50 miles away from the campsite and when they reached the middle, the bodies woke up and attacked them. They were not trying to kill them but were trying to eat them. The soldier died shortly after, maybe he was living only to tell his comrades about the incident. The higher ups did not believe it but the doctors confirmed that the bite marks were of human teeth and it was not of one person. The higher ups were alarmed and as a precaution send fighter planes for surveying the land. They did not find any such field of bodies but in order to flush out any hidden German soldiers, they dropped bombs at a distance of 10 miles from army camp to 60 miles. They did not get any results till they reached the 40 miles mark. When they dropped bombs, they did not find any German soldiers but what they found was worse than that. They founds thousands of corpses in the forest and these corpses were moving. The pilots horrified emptied their entire payload at the corpses but they were too many. They reported to the base and planes were send in all directions, with the camp acting as ground zero."

Alexander, " Did they find something?"

O'Connell continued, " They found similar corpses in all directions. Basically they were slowly surrounding the camp. These corpses moved at night only. The army was ordered to retreat fully during the day with the fighter jets acting as shields for the infantry. It was during the retreat that German fighter plans attacked in large numbers suddenly. They bombed the the retreating army and started a battle in the air. The undead, this is what they were called started moving towards the retreating army in daytime but their speed was very slow. The army managed to retreat without encountering the undead but lost many soldiers due to this. The only silver lining in this was they managed to capture a German pilot. He was not able to suicide because he lost conciousness due to impact."

Alexander, " What did he revealed?"

O'Connell, " The German was not talking but after some truly extreme measures, he revealed shocking news. This plan was personally made by Hitler. The artifact he had uncovered was truly evil. Hitler did not knew how to activate it but Hitler had read that some artifacts required sacrifices. He sacrificed his opposers and the death row criminals in German jails but it was not enough. Then a truly evil plan came in his mind, he started sacrificing the Polish citizens. First, he started with remote villages.

After sacrificing about 15 villages, the artifact showed reaction. The pilot was not some big shot in the army but he had heard that from his brother-in-law who was high up in the chain of command when he was drunk, about it. The artifact had the power to change people into undead. The undead were able to sense any living being in a 80 miles radius and were able to travel 10 miles on flat terrain during the night but remained motionless during the day."

Alexander, " What was the artifact? How so much was known about these undead?"

Eve continued, " The artifact was a disc which was filled with strange symbols. When the artifact had enough sacrifices, the symbols would change to red. The artifact had drawbacks also. The raised undead didn't differentiated between friend and foe, all the living things were a food to them. The artifact needed more sacrifices after every use. The undead were unnatural, they were rotting so they had become a breeding ground for plagues and diseases. The places they had travelled through would be infected for at least 2 weeks."

O'Connell snorted in morbid amusement and continued, " The Germans also paid for their deeds. When the undead were first raised, they had raised a large number of people more than they could handle. The camp was destroyed and the undead moved towards different places of human settlement. The Germans send teams to know about what happened. What they found was the remains of their soldiers and that accursed artifact buried under ruins. All the information about the undead were collected by paying in exchange thousands of innocent lives. When the allied forces reached Poland, the Germans formed suicide squads whose aim was to lead the undead towards their enemies. They completed their missions but died in the process. Now, that the undead had new preys, the Germans fortified their bases and started planning about their next step."

Alexander asked in very serious tone, " What were the casualties?"

O'Connell continued, " The Germans lost about 20 percent of their invading force and Poland lost more than half of it's population. The allies lost 15 percent of their soldiers."

Alexander thought, " This war was far more destructive than my world's war. The opening salvo was so destructive then what about the overall casualties of this war?"

Alexander, " How many people died in this war ?"

O'Connell, " About 300 million people died in this war. About 210 million were civilians."

Alexander was shocked, " In my world, 70 million people died which was so shocking but in this world the death troll is so unbelieveable." Alexander asked, " Do the common citizens know about this? You said that there were more than one of these items."

O'Connell replied, " No, they don't know. The public was told that the deaths of people were due to genocidal approach of the Nazis. Yes, there were more than one mystical items used in war."

Alexander, " What happened next?"

Eve, " This war brought out the hidden monsters out of everyone. The allied powers sent out hundreds of fighter planes to destroy the undead and the German forces in Poland. The war was brutal as the Germans gave their all to defend themselves. After 2 weeks, Poland was liberated. But while allied powers were concentrating in Poland, axis powers launched simultaneous invasion on all the countries surrounding them and quickly conquered them. The hold of axis powers were too tight and the allied powers were concerned with something else. The allied powers also wanted to acquire mystical items. They started the search across the entire globe but focussed their main attention on China, India, Egypt and Europe. All these countries had ancient legends about many mystical items. They did not find anything in China, India and Egypt as the local people strongly opposed the digging of their ancient historic sites. The allied powers were worried that this would attract the attention of Germans and could potentially lead another mystical weapon in German hands. They finally found an ancient weapon in the hidden catacombs beneath a Greek city. It worked similar to the bolt of Zeus mentioned in legends. It did not brought down thunder on people but it did influenced the sky to create massive thunder storms. This weapon also required human sacrifice to activate but it could be charged with electricity. The German weapon was fully dependent on human sacrifices. They did not mention the name of the city in records. Eve thinks that there may be clues to other weapons in there. Now, the allied had air supremacy so they launched fast air attacks against the axis powers. Meanwhile, Russia and Japan were also searching for mystical items. This search continued for 6 years while the war was being fought. Hitler used the Jewish people as sacrifices and unreleased massive hordes of undead while the axis powers bombed them. The war continued to be in a stalemate but the balance was slowly shifting towards the allied as they had aerial supremacy. Then many things happened simultaneously, which changed the whole war and the allied won. "

Alexander, " What happened?"
