Merchant Herbert, Tom, and even Joan blinked at the sudden interaction between Master Ryan and Steward Lewis.
Most people would go out of their way to be polite, respectful, and courteous to someone of a higher rank.
Even if Tom was originally doubtful and spiteful of Master Ryan because he thought that the exiled Prince wrongfully took away the position of the Master of the Village from his grandfather, Tom still did his best to be polite, at least on the surface.
Joan herself dealt with a somewhat similar struggle as Tom. She was a maid assassin and knew her place, as well as the fact that her main priority was protecting the former Prince Ryan, even when she thought that his beliefs were outrageous and disconcerting.
The two did their best to communicate better with Master Ryan, so they found themselves in awe that Steward Lewis was able to do just that.
