Chapter 23: To The Outside
[Additional Info: Magos is a 9 Star Grand Mage, Level 91 - the strongest mage in history.]
As Vaughn read this additional information, he realized that the task was no longer just difficult; it was next to impossible to fulfill the condition. Killing the granddaughter of a 9 Star Grand Mage at Level 91 was a death sentence waiting to happen.
"Are you an idiot!?" Vaughn raised his voice, standing up from the chair almost instantly after reading the paper.
Garry stammered, "W-what?"
"Magos. He is a 9 Star Grand Mage. He is Level 91! Do you think it makes sense to hunt his granddaughter? Why don't you say it clearly? You want me killed, don't you?" Vaughn raged, his anger reaching its peak because the request was indeed ridiculous.
1000 gold coins? No one would even dream of doing such a dangerous task for such a measly amount of money.
"Listen, boy, calm down. Calm down first," Garry tried to make Vaughn calm, but Vaughn was not willing to listen.
"I don't care about the gold coins. Go and feed them to the dogs. I will not be doing such a task!" Vaughn became stern, opening his inventory and preparing to return the pouches.
"Calm down, kid, listen to us first.
It was then that Vaughn heard another voice, a familiar one.
It was Grren!
Vaughn turned towards Grren, but his expressions remained unchanged. Even if Grren wanted to help, the demand seemed unreasonable. However, since Grren asked him to at least listen, he would do that.
"What is it? Speak. I am listening," Vaughn continued the dominant and cold act as he sat back on the chair.
Garry slowly came closer to Vaughn and revealed something that made him reconsider the offer. "This girl, she has been kicked out of her family."
"What?!" This was a piece of news that caught Vaughn off-guard.
"Yes. Do you really think the main family will even care for a girl whom they had thrown out a year ago?" Garry asked.
Vaughn tapped his chin as he thought about it. The new information made the situation more complicated than he initially perceived. If the girl had already been abandoned by her family, then targeting her might not lead to Magos hunting him down.
Previously, Vaughn had wondered why someone from such a great family would participate in a tournament that was more or less focused on men. He had guessed it might be for fame, and now it was finally revealed that she wanted to earn reputation to get back to her family - his guess was more or less right.
"Alright, now this seems somewhat doable... But as you said, she is a magician, then perhaps I would need time to prepare for that," Vaughn said.
Upon hearing that, Garry only laughed. "Haha, she is just a talentless idiot. Even after reaching the two-star stage, she can't even do a basic spell."
"Hell, she would die on her own while fighting someone else. You don't have to worry about that, haha," Garry laughed, trying to brush the matter aside, but Vaughn remained cautious.
Vaughn couldn't shake off the feeling that something didn't add up. If Delta was truly weak and unable to defend herself, then why would someone go to the lengths of commissioning an assassin to target her? There was more to this matter, and Vaughn was determined to find out the truth.
"I will go and investigate the case," Vaughn declared to Garry, who seemed reluctant upon hearing this. No slaves were allowed to freely roam outside without being bought, and Vaughn was a valuable asset. Garry was against the idea of letting him leave, but before he could voice his objection, Grren intervened.
"That's a nice idea. If you can successfully take a look at her, then you will be able to get an idea of her weakness," Grren said. Garry nodded in agreement, and Vaughn knew he had a chance to explore the situation further.
"Yes, I will leave immediately," Vaughn said, putting the paper containing the information on the desk.
Grren took the lead and guided Vaughn outside after exchanging glances with Garry.
Both Vaughn and Grren exited the office room, heading towards the main gate, leaving Garry alone with his thoughts.
As they walked, Vaughn suddenly paused midway, realizing that Genie and Moon might be worried about him. He turned to Grren and said, "Genie and Moon might be worried. I will inform them and then return. Stay here."
Grren shook his head and said, "The guards are hostile towards you. Let me accompany you."
Vaughn nodded in agreement, and both of them made their way to the cage where Genie and Moon were held. The two girls were standing, trying to peek outside, eagerly looking for any sign of Vaughn as a considerable amount of time had passed since he had left.
As Vaughn approached them, both Genie and Moon called out to him with excitement and joy, expressing their surprise and happiness at the news that he was going outside.
"So, I have to inspect something related to the tournament. I have been given permission to go outside," Vaughn informed them.
Both Genie and Moon's faces lit up at the news of Vaughn being allowed to venture outside.
"Outside, brother!?" "Really?" they asked, their eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Yes, so, I just came to tell you guys. I might come back a little later, don't worry about me," Vaughn assured them.
Moon and Genie wanted to express their desire to accompany him, but they knew it was impossible due to the guards' hostility. Instead, they smiled and agreed to what Vaughn said.
"Okay, brother, take care!" Moon saluted, a gesture wishing him a safe journey.
Genie, on the other hand, pulled Vaughn closer and said in a low voice, "Come closer, Vaughn."
As Vaughn leaned in, expecting to hear something, he was taken by surprise when Genie gave him a small peck on the forehead. Flustered, he was about to ask something, but Genie quickly turned her back to him and said, "Be safe. I... No, we will be waiting! Come back soon!"
Vaughn nodded, trying to collect himself after the unexpected gesture from Genie.
"Don't worry," he reassured them before leaving with Grren, making their way towards the gigantic main gate.
Between him and the outside world, now only stood a gate.
