Chapter 140: Captured

My heart raced with unease as the car hurtled backward in a frenzy. Suddenly, a figure was struck, sent flying over the roof, rolling down in a lifeless heap. The heavy thud reverberated in my ears, filling me with an overwhelming sense of despair.

The car jolted violently, and I couldn't tell how many bodies lay beneath its wheels. Then, out of nowhere, a wooden stick pierced through the rear window. Without a second to spare, I threw myself over Xiaomi, shielding her as we ducked low.

A loud crash shattered the car's glass, and a stick wedged itself across the cabin. The car came to a screeching halt. Within moments, a crowd surrounded us. Zhao Kui struggled to restart the engine, but fate had other plans—the car stalled. "Fei, get out! Run!" he shouted, throwing the door open.

Gun in hand, he fired several shots into the crowd, felling a few men in a pool of blood. I grabbed Xiaomi, pulling her out of the car. But as we stepped out, dread consumed me—dozens of men swarmed us, their sheer numbers blocking any escape.

Wang Gui unsheathed a blade, charging toward the attackers with fearless resolve, cutting down anyone who approached. I leaned against the car, casting a glance at Zhao Kui, who had already broken through the encirclement, his gun terrifying the mob into submission. But we were separated.

"Wang Gui, come here!" Zhao Kui shouted.

Wang Gui cleared a path for me but was soon overwhelmed. His knife fell from his grip as the crowd engulfed him. Though a skilled fighter, he was no match for their numbers. My heart sank. With Xiaomi behind me, I knew I couldn't abandon her.

"Go! Run! If one escapes, it's a victory!" I roared.

Ignoring Zhao Kui's cries, I hurled myself into the fray, determined to buy him time. I charged like a raging bull, but reality struck hard—I was no match for the mob. Their bodies formed an unyielding wall, and I was quickly dragged into the chaos. Rising to my feet, I fought back, punching anyone in my path. My fists connected with bone, the cracking sound reverberating with each strike.

I didn't care—I had to hold them off. Time was all Zhao Kui needed. Just one of us had to escape.

Suddenly, a searing pain shot through my leg. I collapsed to my knees as a wooden stick struck the back of my head. A deafening buzz filled my ears, and darkness consumed me.

I struggled to rise, but my head felt unbearably heavy. Through blurry vision, I saw the crowd parting. Men with guns approached, their presence a harbinger of doom. Desperately, I scanned the scene for Zhao Kui, relieved to see him sprinting away, gunfire echoing in his wake.

The gunfight unfolded like a nightmare, bodies dropping lifelessly to the ground. Zhao Kui, a soldier with impeccable aim, gradually faded from sight. A sigh of relief escaped me—at least one of us was free.

Suddenly, darkness enveloped me. A coarse burlap sack was forced over my head, and I was yanked upright, dragged along with no sense of direction. Xiaomi's panicked screams rang out, piercing my soul. Powerless to protect her, I clung to the faint hope that this was merely a ransom ploy. After all, if they intended to kill us, they could've done so already.

I comforted myself with this thought as they threw me into a vehicle. The faint scent of Xiaomi's perfume reached me; she trembled uncontrollably beside me, her voice muffled as if gagged. I gripped her hand tightly, offering silent reassurance. Any resistance could provoke our captors into committing unspeakable acts.

As long as we were alive, there was still hope. Zhao Kui had escaped—our chances weren't completely gone.

The journey stretched on in eerie silence, the vehicle bumping along uneven terrain. I guessed we were headed toward a remote mountainous area. Myanmar was unfamiliar territory to me, shrouded in mystery and danger. Wei had once warned me about the volatile undercurrents here, with private militias lurking everywhere. I had dismissed his concerns, but now, his words felt hauntingly prescient.

Eventually, the car stopped. The doors swung open, and I was pulled out, disoriented. The musty scent of decay mingled with a chilly breeze, suggesting a vast, empty warehouse.

A sudden kick to my leg sent me sprawling to my knees. Others knelt nearby, their presence palpable in the oppressive silence. I dared not move or speak, surrendering entirely to my captors' whims.

Voices spoke in Burmese, incomprehensible to me. Moments later, I heard the dull thuds of wooden sticks striking flesh, followed by muffled cries of pain. Wang Gui's voice was unmistakable, his agony muted by a gag.

Fear gripped me as I wondered—am I next?

They hoisted me up and tied me to a pillar. Blinded by the sack, I felt the relentless blows land on my abdomen. Pain radiated through me, each strike an unbearable torment. I couldn't fathom their intentions—why abduct me only to beat me senseless?

Minutes dragged on like hours, and when the beating ceased, nausea overwhelmed me. I vomited, my stomach feeling as if it had been torn apart.

The sack was finally removed, and I lifted my head with great effort. Through blurred vision, I discerned a dark-skinned man in a military uniform. His long hair and rugged demeanor suggested years spent roaming the mountains as a guerrilla fighter.

He gripped my jaw, his voice icy and menacing. "Do you want this to be quick or slow?"

"I don't understand what you mean," I replied, forcing myself to remain calm.

His jaw tightened, teeth clenched. "Call your boss. Tell him to prepare fifty million for your ransom."

Relief washed over me—it was money they wanted. But confusion lingered. Why target me? If Wei was their real objective, why not kidnap him directly?

A phone was shoved into my hand, but when I hesitated, he barked a chilling threat. "Play games, and I'll have my men mutilate your brother and violate your woman. I'll make you watch every moment until you beg for death."

His words, crude and venomous, left no room for defiance. I nodded, dialing Wei's number.

No answer.

Despair gnawed at me as the call disconnected. Repeated attempts yielded the same result. My frustration mounted—Wei, you bastard! You'll be the death of me!

They reclaimed the phone, retying the sack over my head. This time, they left me in darkness, their footsteps fading into the distance.

Bound and blind, I tried to steady my breathing, forcing myself to think. Who were these people? What were their true motives? And why, above all, did they leave me alive?

The answers eluded me, buried beneath the shadowy depths of this nightmare.
