Just Focus On Me

Set in the late 1950s, Just Focus On Me is a poignant queer tale inspired by beloved titles such as Nana, Banana Fish, Heartstopper, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Fellow Travelers. Through the journals of Victoria Payne and Jane Myers, we follow their journey alongside their friends as they navigate the complexities of love and self-acceptance.
Amid societal expectations and the weight of religious trauma, Victoria and Jane must confront their feelings for each other while grappling with the pressures of conformity. As they explore the true meaning of love, they learn to embrace their identities and support one another in a world that often feels hostile, discovering that that love is not just about romance; it's about friendship, acceptance, and the courage to be true to oneself.

Chapter 8: The Day I Fell in Love with Jane Myers

September 26th, 1956, the day I fell in love. A day I would never regret yet a day I took for granted. I wish I could relive this day, although it's too late now.

Class began. It was math. Why did math have to be our first period? I mean... it's SO annoying! ...Jane is sitting behind me... I couldn't help but steal a few glances. Ugh! Snap out of it, Victoria Payne!✦•······················•🪻•······················•✦Finally, lunch time!

"Tori, Tori, let's go ask Jane to sit with us before Tom snatches her!" Priscilla said, full of enthusiasm like always. Before I could say more, she grabbed my hand and ran off towards Jane with me.

"Jane! Janeee!!! Oh, do come sit with us! Pleaseee?"Jane looked a bit surprised and smiled gently. "Sure... let's go then, Priscilla... and I don't believe I caught your name before?"My cheeks heated up very slightly. "Victoria, Victoria Payne," I said."You can just call her 'Tori,' though!!!" Priscilla butted in. Embarrassing...Jane chuckled. "I'm Jane, Jane Myers. Nice to meet you, 'Tori.'" She smiled warmly at me.I nodded, "Yes... nice to meet you too..."

Priscilla, Jane, and I went outside to eat lunch.

"Hey... I know a good place to eat," Jane spoke up.

"Oh, oh, do show us!!!" Priscilla responded enthusiastically.

Jane brought us to a beautiful field filled with lavender, lilac, and violets. I had no idea we even had this at our school.

"Woah... it's like so beautiful! Isn't it, Tori!?" Priscilla said, full of enthusiasm.

"Mn... it's really pretty..." I agreed.

Jane smiled. "It's very pretty, isn't it? Hey, Victoria... you sort of give me the same vibe as a violet."My face turned red, and my heart began to beat. This is the same exact feeling I felt for Mary all those years ago... that moment she drew me in that wedding dress. I hate this feeling... it's one I shouldn't feel. It'll only lead me to more trouble...Jane must've noticed my expression. "Ah—I'm sorry! I didn't mean to offend you! I meant it as a compliment! You see—violets give off a different aura than other flowers... in a good way! They're almost serious and bold... yet, the center looks so... kind. Aside from that, violets are very bold and beautiful!"That only made my heart beat faster. That was the best compliment someone's ever said to me. I think I'm in love again... "Oh... no, I didn't take it as an offense. Thank you, Jane, you're quite beautiful yourself."Jane's cheeks turned slightly red, and she smiled. "Thank you."Priscilla stood there watching, with a small smirk. Ugh. What was she so cocky for?The three of us sat down for lunch and talked about random things. It was really fun. Maybe having lunch with Jane today wasn't so bad after all...What was I even scared for?
