Regardless of how many allies he had, Megumi would still die alone.
That's what Gojo told him, and it was with that in mind that he developed something to help him.
He couldn't just rely on his companions or even his Shikigamis to save him when facing a powerful adversary. He needed to act for himself.
Weeks of practice went by, and still, he hadn't been able to progress with the technique in question.
The ability to take on traits of his Shikigamis for himself.
But the growth of a Jujutsu sorcerer never comes easily.
And confronted with a life-or-death situation, in a desperate act, he finally achieved what he wanted.
'It's just a cheap imitation for now.' Blinking as he adjusted to his new vision, Megumi stood up. 'But it should be enough.'
Naoya, who had been watching the boy with a strange expression, let a scowl form on his face.
It wasn't just Megumi's eyes—Naoya could see that something else had changed in the sorcerer.
He seemed more confident, more determined. Very different from the beginning of the battle, where Naoya could see uncertainty in every move the boy made.
Naoya was irritated by this. Having someone use him to improve themselves made him want to vomit.
At this point, he just wanted to kill Megumi already.
!
Disappearing in a flash step, Naoya charged toward Megumi, determined to end the sorcerer with a thrust to his heart.
The game was over—these sorcerers had already irritated him enough. He wouldn't waste any more time testing them.
Just as he was about to reach the boy, Naoya narrowed his eyes as he drew back his fist in anticipation.
Boom!
But widening his eyes as a fist struck his stomach, Naoya urgently turned to Megumi, noticing the sorcerer glaring at him with a deadly gleam in his eyes.
'He reacted?!'
'I can react!' Megumi smiled, and pulling his fist back, he prepared to continue his attack. 'The divine dog's eyes let me see his movements, but...'
Taking a punch to the face, Megumi gritted his teeth as he quickly stepped back, swiftly joining his hands and summoning a few toads that lashed out their tongues toward the adversary, the Zenin easily dodging the attempt to restrain him. 'That punch was a lucky hit, my body still can't react properly.'
"You trash!" Naoya cursed, the veins on his forehead bulging as a sign of his growing anger. "A cheap trick won't save you!"
And with those words, he exploded toward Megumi, who was preparing to sink into a pool of shadows.
Clap!
But freezing when the vision before him changed, Naoya went on alert and turned as he raised his defense, his attempt ineffective as a fist struck him square in the face, pushing him back.
"Don't forget about me, Aoi Todo!" Todo exclaimed, a bit of blood staining his teeth.
"You son of a bitch." Naoya spat blood, an irritated smile forming. "I'm going to kill you all!"
!
Rushing toward the sorcerer, Naoya widened his eyes as numerous tongues restrained his movements, Todo propelling himself forward and taking the opportunity to land a solid punch to his stomach.
"Ugh!" Naoya spat, and adjusting his trajectory to move away, he let his technique guide him.
But when he was at frame 20/24, his eyes widened as his body was abruptly struck, terror spreading across his face as he felt his muscles freeze due to the penalty for not respecting the 24-frame movement.
"24 frames per second." Hearing that statement, Naoya noticed Megumi glaring at him with a venomous smile. "I could see it just now."
'Son of a bitch-'
Boom!
Taking a punch charged with cursed energy to the chest, Naoya flew backward, blood escaping from his mouth, the vein on his forehead becoming more prominent as he stopped his momentum with his feet.
"You bastards!" Naoya vomited a mouthful of blood, the damage to his body proving more than he could bear. "Do you think this is over? No one's going to accept a piece of shit like you as the clan leader!"
Pointing at Megumi with a trembling hand, Naoya screamed with hatred embedded in every word. "Mark my words, boy! I'm going to kill you! I'm going to-"
!
But as he seemed determined to continue his villainous declaration, his eyes widened when he felt something pierce his thigh, his eyes moving downward to see a nail embedded in his flesh.
"Hey!" And in the distance, a bloodied Nobara flashed a malicious smile as the hammer in her hands glowed with cursed energy. "Why don't you repeat what you said, you piece of shit?"
Speaking with disdain, Nobara surprised everyone as numerous nails began floating around her, the woman's smile widening. "Men like you deserve to be put down like a dog."
Naoya gritted his teeth as the nails exploded in his direction, his eyes narrowing before he used his technique to avoid the attacks, moving away.
Megumi tried to follow him, but the adrenaline wasn't enough to keep him on his feet much longer, the blood loss from the wound in his stomach causing him to collapse to his knees. "Damn it..."
"Don't run, you bastard!" Nobara roared as she realized Naoya had disappeared, the frustration evident on her face. "You coward!"
"Are you okay?" Todo approached Megumi.
Even though he was the first to be struck by Naoya, his resilience left him in a better state than the other two.
"We need to get back to the school." Megumi said, as Todo helped him to his feet.
Nobara huffed when she noticed that the Zenin wouldn't return, and rubbing her abdomen with a dejected expression, she turned to the two. "Damn, I need a massage."
"This isn't the time for that." Megumi complained, but Nobara just shrugged.
"..."
A little farther away, Naoya could be seen running from the battlefield, a murderous gleam in his eyes as he appeared quite indifferent.
Defeated by Megumi and Todo, he couldn't help but feel frustrated and humiliated. None of them should have been difficult to deal with.
But his arrogance ended up affecting him. Because of that, he was unable to kill them.
He wouldn't make that mistake again.
The next time he encountered Megumi Fushiguro, he would shatter his heart with a single strike, whether he was clan leader or not.
That was a promise...
"..."
From the top of a building, Itadori watched Naoya leave in silence, his eyebrows raising as he noticed a scowl forming on the Zenin's face before he increased his speed.
"That was interesting."
He decided to let Naoya go. The Zenin had a purpose, and that was something he didn't want to change. Having him serve as a way for Maki to evolve was crucial for her strengthening.
He didn't want to take that from her.
Turning to see his companions preparing to leave, a sincere smile spread across his lips. "It seems like things are changing too much... That's good."
Nodding in satisfaction, he stood on the edge of the building, his eyes wandering over the view of the city that had once been so bustling.
"The preparations are complete."
