Redundancy: Chapter 12 - Timelapse (I)

The cacophonous detonation of spells and swords colliding and discharging filled the air, followed by a series of scintillating sparks. In a tranquil training ground bathed in the soft hues of the rising sun, a silver-haired boy stood before two spirited seven-year-olds.

One of them wielded a small wooden sword, and the other, with eyes gleaming in concentration, harnessed elements of magic. Adam's eyes were bright with anticipation as he weaved across the wide lawn, within the confines of the barrier.

For a slight moment, they came to a standstill, looking at each other as Adam smiled at them. "Again."

The next moment, the wooden sword whistled through the air, aiming to strike at his abdomen while the other one stood a few paces away, his small hands shimmering with a faint magical glow.

The battle was on. Once again.

Adam moved fluidly, deflecting the enthusiastic attacks with a wooden sword of his own. His movements were almost like a dance, a mixture of calculated parries and counterstrikes, never missing a beat. The one on the other hand, who had swung the sword was a girl, her long green hair swaying in the air as she tried to push her sword down, but the sheer difference in size and age was too much for her to overcome.

Swatting her sword away, Adam swung his sword in a downward slash. Pushing the ground with force, Luna jumped back, the tip of Adam's sword avoiding her eye by a mere inch.

Meanwhile, the boy---Elijah, focused on his magic, conjuring small orbs of light that he launched at Adam. His aim was precise to a deadly extent, and the magical projectiles sailed towards him, requiring quick reflexes to evade.

However, instead of evading it, Adam swatted the spell away with a flick of his sword, making the shimmering balls of flames to deflect and fall on the ground, burning the battered ground below even more.

"To be fair, it is not an honest match up." Elijah spoke up as he glanced in the direction of his twin little sister.

"What does that mean? You are just too slow and weak." Luna replied with scorn as she looked down at her brother.

"Not wrong there. But it is supposed to be a teamwork. You don't coordinate. At all." Elijah shrugged his shoulders.

Before they could talk further, Adam closed in, his appearing like a diagonal blur, making almost no sound. Luna pushed Elijah and backflipped into the air, twisting her body midair as she almost coiled around the sword, before falling down and landing on her two feet.

Adam's left foot pressed the ground once more, blitzing Luna's perception as he arrived in front of her. However, her perception was not entirely off the marks. Bringing her sword up in a defensive stance, she waited for a contact with the sword. In order to execute a Water God Style maneuver.

It wouldn't matter to Adam, but it was still better than nothing.

However, Adam placed his foot to the side and brushed past her. He was never aiming for her. Bringing his sword up, he aimed at Elijah's shoulder.

"Knew you'd come for me." He smirked as he stomped the ground as the whole ground rippled, forming waves. It wasn't the force but a spell. With his footing compromised, Adam jumped up in the air. A small icicle formed on the tip of Elijah's finger. "I noticed. You aren't very good when you don't have solid ground under your feet."

The icicle shot like a bullet from a sniper, causing a loud sound. However, Adam disappeared as if he was never there. Elijah looked to the right. But before he could look, a green blur bolted forward like a sonic boom, already catching up with Adam. Twisting her torso, he swung her sword in a cyclone motion as Adam lightly tapped it.

However, the force made him almost lose grip on his sword.

'They sure are master's kids.'

Adam happily thought to himself. Luna didn't stop there as she spun around again and again, like a hurricane, landing on strike after another.

'Her body constitution is stronger than mine. Is this the blessing that comes with green hair what master was talking about?'

Adam firmed his foothold on the ground and instead of just blocking, started counterattacking. The sword touched her arm, legs and shoulders multiple times, the augmentation with meek amounts of touki forming small cuts all over her.

But she brushed it off, swinging her sword with the usual stoic face, her eyes glimmering with an ominous blue shade.

"Now."

Elijah's voice ringed out as she jumped up, paving way for a huge Stone Canon hurtling at him.

As the spar reached its crescendo, another boy yawned in the corner, his sword leaning against him.

"Not practicing?"

The boy, Xavier looked back as he saw Julian standing right behind him, arms crossed.

"Good morning, father."

"Good morning."

Julian walked towards him and sat down, leaving a few inches distance between them.

"So?"

Xavier let out an awkward laugh, scratching the back of his ear. "Well, Luna doesn't really like me. And she's too strong to keep up with. Elijah is a mage so I can't really work with them." He explained, fiddling with the hilt of his sword.

"Is that so?" Julian asked, skeptical.

"Yep."

"Not because you came home a few months ago?"

Xavier looked down at the floor. After the last Christmas, Ariel and Xavier never stepped foot inside the City of Sharia. Which meant the last time he was here was when he was 10 months old. He was now 7 years old.

Although Julian wasn't a foreign person to him due to him visiting them multiple times, every week, the same can't be said for everyone else. Of course, the elders accepted him as soon as he came, since everyone wanted him to live with them.

The siblings, however, were a different story.

"I don't think so, no. It's more of their characters and goals, I guess, which isn't letting me, or them, to properly get along. Nothing that I mind though." Xavier replied, swinging his head sideways. "Luna is the strongest amongst us. She can beat me as well since she is so good at Wind Magic. So, keeping up with her is a hassle. Elijah is best at magic, especially Fire Magic. Keeping up with him is also a hassle."

"And you?"

"Hmm, I don't have a strong element. So, it is quite hard to keep up with such remarkable siblings. I think they'll get along with me down the road." He leaned back.

"But you do hav--, hm, well, if you want to keep it a secret."

"Haha, father, I have no idea what you might be talking about." He smiled at Julian.

Xavier Greyrat. Currently the most cunning and devious out of all the Greyrat siblings. When he became too clever for Ariel to control, he was sent to his father. Coincidentally, Julian always wanted Xavier to live with him.

"Hm." Julian just hummed in response.

They directed their attention back at the ongoing spar as Xavier leaned forward. "Well, they're done."

Adam swung his sword as it landed into Luna's ribs, making her fall back into the trajectory of the Stone Canon. Elijah clenched his teeth as he changed the arc, narrowly avoiding Luna's impact with the spell. Digging her sword into the ground, she reduced her speed, but a wooden sword made contact with both Luna and Elijah's neck at the same time, almost without a delay.

"Dead." Adam mumbled as Elijah dramatically fell to the ground.

"God this is so frustrating." He threw his hands in the air.

"Stop complaining." Luna replied with a frown as she gasped for breath, a bitter look on her face.

"Better than before." Adam complimented before pointing his finger at Luna. "Think more." And then he turned his attention to Elijah. "Think less."

"Yeah, I don't think that is going to help much, Adam, but *phew* thanks, regardless." Elijah took deep breaths.

He was physically the weakest among his age fellow siblings. Luna had a naturally gifted strong physique, thanks to the modifications from the Laplace Factor. It wasn't an uncommon factor, since Rudeus' second son, Sieghart had exactly the same constitution as her. Strong bodies and green hair.

"Sit." Adam spoke, a bit louder as both of them sat in a lotus position. After that, he started explaining things about magic and swordsmanship.

Julian turned his head towards Xavier, as if asking him if he wanted to join them in the mini class. In return, he just shook his head. A few moments passed by as they listened to Adam explaining their mistakes.

Xavier leaned closer, placing his head on Julian's arm. "Dad? Can we go outside?"

"Now?"

"Hm, yes. Just the two of us." He spoke as his voice was whisked away by the wind.

"Sure."

"Me too. Me too." Xavier turned around and groaned. It was his youngest sister, Lara Greyrat. "Brother!" With a quick dash, the six-year-old hugged Xavier from behind, making him fall from the elevated surface and on to the grassy patch below, face first. Lara also fell but the impact was cushioned due to her being on his back.

"Fattie, get off me!"

"No. I like it this way, hehe." She forced her body weight on Xavier, pinning the boy down to the ground. "First say I can go along as well. I will get off then."

"I can remove you from my back. Do you really think I need to say any of that?" Xavier asked in a calm tone.

"I am still coming." She whispered.

"...Fine. Get off me."

"Heh, I think I'll let you suffer a while mor--"

Her sentence was cut off midway as Julian picked her up from his back. Scooping her up in a shoulder hold, Julian looked down at him. Xavier stood up and dusted off his clothes from the grass sticking to him.

"Dad? Can I come along?" Lara asked, her head still on his shoulder.

Julian looked down at Xavier who nodded.

"Sure."

"Thank you! Let me down, I want to get dressed." With an excited squeal, she was let down as she hopped like a rabbit towards the house, ready to get changed.

"Was there something you wanted to say outside?" Julian asked Xavier once Lara was gone.

"Nothing, really. I never went outside with you. Or with anyone, in general. I haven't really seen how the common people go around and do whatever they do. Going out with you, father, seems like a good experience." Xavier replied as Julian hummed and placed a hand on his head, before turning around and walking away.

"Main door. 10 minutes. Sharp." Julian instructed before walking off.

Xavier smiled, however, as soon as he disappeared behind the door, he looked back the two twins. Luna's head jerked back in his direction, almost instantly. The two locked eyes as Luna huffed.

"Hmph."

'What did I even do so wrong?'

(***)

In the heart of a magical medieval city, where cobblestone streets wounded their way around buildings adorned with ivy and flowers, Julian stepped into it after a long time.

For the past seven years, he spent his life in boredom for the most part. Once the third and fifth spots on [Seven Great World Powers] was occupied by a human, there was a worldwide search for both Rudeus and Julian. Challengers from all over the world who thought that the title was merely passed on the Void and Magic God began to search for them everywhere.

No one could really tell where he was, since it was obscured in plain sight using multiple levels of protective barriers using Barrier Magic, two of them which were God Ranked Barriers. The barriers placed limitations on the mana usage, despite how much mana one held.

Since almost no one had more mana than Rudeus with Elijah coming in close second, it was impossible for someone to use full extent of their mana inside the barrier, except those who were Greyrats. And their caretakers. Like Eva and Adam. Or Suzanne, who was now a nanny for Rudeus' kids.

While challengers seek Julian and Rudeus for a spot into the world rankings, ministers, envoys and others searched for him for delegations. Possibly to get either of the brother's protection. They had extravagant offers, like offering ships upon ships of gold, or a place in Royal Assemblies.

But everything died out in 3 years. Once Julian reached 20 years of age, there was no one left to challenge him. Or rather, put up a serious battle. He had some really good fights in which even his life was endangered. However, after 3 years, the sole source of his entertainment died out.

However, the envoys still searched for Rudeus and Julian. Due to that, the Asura Kingdom was always filled with honeyed letter, to coax Ariel and in extension, the Greyrat brothers. By now, it was common knowledge that Julian Greyrat was the father of the crown prince of Asura.

More baffling matter was that Xavier had Greyrat name attached to him, and not Asura.

But those things hardly mattered to him. He was living him life in quiet peace. Julian was now 24 years of age. He had 5 kids. He slept peacefully without a care, every night with one of his women, woke up as he liked, eat ice cream, had a jog, eat ice cream, did some bodyweight exercises. After that he used to spend time with Zenith. And some more ice cream with her.

After his time with Zenith, Julian and Paul train. That is just an excuse, since Julian merely wants to bully Paul. However, Paul, despite realising it, kept silent and took everything Julian threw at him. The training usually ended with a dessert like a banana bread, peach cobbler....or some more ice cream.

His sisters, Aisha and Norn were now 18 years of age. Both had graduated from the school.

Norn opted to become a writer, writing her Julian's tales from his childhood to until now, almost like a biography. But not using his real name, of course. However, even from a glance, one could tell it was about him. Alongside Julian's accomplishments which was her favourite work and something she took great pride in; she also composed a Superd book on the request of Rudeus.

Aisha was a bit less ambitious. However, her role was even more crucial. Which was to act as a handler. Since she went into the school, Julian admitted her into more educational and algorithm classes. She now handled Julian's chain of restaurants accounts and Rudeus' mercenary group as well.

The mercenary group was just a name though. It was actually a secret, miniature army under Rudeus and Julian's flag, with Komrade Bluewolf as its first commander.

Life was going well for him. Or so it looked like.

Back to the main thing, today, Julian was determined to break free from the chains of his own uninterested demeanor towards his kids and take his eldest son, Xavier, and youngest daughter, Lara, on a tour of the city, on Xavier's personal request.

Xavier Greyrat, the epitome of his father's unyielding composure, was a young man with a noble bearing. His light hair---inherited from his father and serious yet nonchalant eyes gave him a palpable air of superiority.

He almost seemed like a more expressive Julian. However, underneath that stern exterior laid a heart full of love for his family, particularly his rambunctious sister, Lara.

Lara was the polar opposite of Xavier, with her golden curls, sparkling blue eyes, and a mischievous grin that could melt the coldest of hearts. The bond between the two was unbreakable. As much as Xavier refused to admit it, he doted on Lara with all his heart.

Xavier was walking on Julian's right, holding his hand. Since it was his first time coming outside in a normal city, he was way too immersed to know where he was going. Lara on the other hand, hopped freely, still holding Julian's left index finger. She knew about all the streets and places since she used to follow Roxy, who was a teacher in the Magical School.

As they made their way towards the main part of the city, they came across a plethora of flower shops.

Lara--in her childlike enthusiasm, darted ahead, giggling as she chased a group of colorful butterflies. Julian let her go, knowing she knew about the streets and ways to come back.

Xavier, however, remained vigilant, watching over her with a protective eye. "Lara, be careful," he admonished, his voice soft but concerned. She stretched the tip of her tongue out, teasing him as she continued her chase.

As they strolled through the enchanting streets, Julian couldn't help but notice the joy that emanated from Xavier, albeit hidden.

He marveled at the glistening canals adorned with lily pads, the quaint shops filled with enchanted trinkets, and the street performers who brought laughter to all who passed by.

They strolled without stopping anywhere. Since this part of the city was comprised mostly of vendors, they could see everything without entering an establishment.

As they continued their tour, they came across a charming ice cream parlor tucked away in a cozy corner of the city. The three of them gulped audibly.

Lara's eyes widened with delight at the sight of the colourful ice cream flavors on display. "Daddy, can we have some ice cream, pretty please?" she pleaded, her big blue eyes wide and innocent.

Xavier placed a hand on her shoulder. "These can't by hygienic surely. We have some in the house..."

Lara narrowed her eyes at him. "Dad must've eaten all of it." She spoke and looked up at Julian who just averted his gaze away from her.

"Uh, its well-made. I know this man." Julian spoke, placing his hands on the back of their heads and slowly ushering them towards it.

"Oh? Sir Julian. Such a pleasure to have you today! Shall I pack everything?"

"Uh, no. A cone would do. Take their flavours as well." Julian motioned at the two little kids, standing beside him.

"Oho, little Lara! How are you today?"

"Good!"

"So, the usual?"

"Yep, yep."

"One chocolate then and errr, hmmm, let me see. Blonde hair, blue eyes. Is he your son?"

"Yes."

"Really? I never saw him around. But then again, I haven't seen anyone except Lara here so I think it is normal, haha. So? Mister little guy, what would you take?"

Xavier cocked his head in mock disdain but wiped it off as he leaned a bit closer to Julian. "Whatever father's taking."

"Ehm, err, ok. Coming right up."

The man kept stealing glances at Xavier who was not removing his eyes from the man. Not even for a single moment. As if the moment he removes his eyes from him, something would happen. Once they were done, they started eating their ice-creams while strolling back into the streets.

With their ice creams in hand, the trio walked until they found a quiet corner to sit and enjoy their sweet treats. Lara's ice cream towered over her tiny hands, and she couldn't help but giggle as she tried to take a bite without causing a mess. "Xavier, you're so boring with your vanilla. Live a little!"

"Uh, I just ordered father would eat."

"Hm? Mine isn't vanilla."

'That guy...huh? Hmmm. Ughh... Hm. Never mind.'

"Oh well, to each their own. I like this one as well." Xavier spoke, looking down at the cone. Because of all the glaring he had done, the man slipped him a basic flavour. By no means was it a bad one, but he just wanted something that Julian was eating.

Looking down, Julian extended his hand. "I haven't taken a bite still. Want some?"

His features brightened up. "Thanks."

With the cone still in his hand, he leaned closer, taking a small bite from it. His eyes opened wide as he looked up.

"It's a mix of different flavours." Julian explained as he slipped it into his hand and took away his ice cream. "You can have that one."

He looked down at it, a bitter smile forming on his face before looking back up at Julian. "Thanks, father."

"Hmm."

As the sun began to set and the city's magical lights started to twinkle. He had allowed himself some free time, by going out with his kids. It was a rare occasion. For his own kids, he was someone like a faraway star, a constant pursuit to catch up to him. Except for Xavier who had never really heard or experienced the mountain of expectations on his shoulders.

The three of them walked back through the enchanting streets. Xavier was holding Lara's arm, keeping her close to himself as she felt tired, ready to drop any moment.

Julian got closer to Lara and scooped her up in a princess carry. As if she waiting for all this, she fell asleep as soon as he picked her up.

"Xavier?"

"Yes, father?"

"You should train starting tomorrow. If you want to pass the test, that is. It is not an obligation."

Xavier pressed the edge of a smooth pebble and kicked it up to his face level, before catching it. "Don't get me wrong, father. I want to take and pass the test. Maybe it is just me being scared." Once again, he laughed, scratching the back of his ear.

"Lie."

"Was it that obvious?"

"It was."

"Maybe I did take after you." Julian looked down at him. "Mom always says you are too tired to tell proper lies. So, you spout half-baked ones that get you in trouble. But I am genuinely bad at them." He laughed, a forced one before looking down with a crestfallen face. "I still do not think I would be accepted. Ariel Anemoi Asura is my mother and Julian Greyrat is my father. But they are not married. That opens rooms for a lot of speculations."

"It does?"

"Asura demographics shows a lot of people with features like us, you, me and mother. Queen in the history of Asura are known for taking many escorts. Will I still be accepted with that speculation hanging in the air?" Xavier asked as he bit his lip.

"And acting pitiful and weak would solve it?"

"Not really. But it won't make me a target for every kind of scorn and envy."

"I see." They walked in silence after that.

Ariel's words kept echoing in his ears. When Julian wasn't interested in anything, he would end the sentence in a "I see." Which meant that he wasn't interested in this matter altogether. He scoffed internally at himself. Scoffed at his optimism.

"You think too much." Julian patted his head, pulling him closer by slinging his arm around his shoulder. "Do you cherish someone in your life?"

"I do. You and mother. Little Ruby. Lara maybe...Ehm, yeah, Lara as well."

"And do they love you back?"

"They do."

"And why are you so confident about that?"

"If I wasn't, I wouldn't talk about it in the first place. Abstract concepts are a bit hard to put into words, though."

"Then do other opinions matter?"

"But the rumours result in a blemish on your name."

"The name? Hm. I don't think Ariel ever told you, but I don't really care about titles. I'd give it away to one of you once you are old enough. It is something that updated on its own."

Xavier's eyes were wide, red streaks in them. He could understand the implication behind his words.

"I understand."

After a few minutes of walk, Lara woke up again.

The sun had almost dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden hue across the city. Julian, Xavier, and Lara made their way to a picturesque bridge that overlooked a serene canal. They leaned against the stone railing; their eyes drawn to the tranquil water below.

Lara's curiosity got the best of her as she gazed at the floating lanterns on the water. "Daddy, what are those beautiful lights in the canal?"

"Those are magic powered lanterns, Lara. People write their wishes on them and release them into the canal."

"Will it make our wishes come true? If we do it as well."

Xavier slightly tapped her head from behind. "Of course, no. Something that absurd and outlandish doesn't exist. Just some people trying to find imaginary hope in life. False one, in simpler terms."

"Ok, old man." She rolled her eyes, and then looked back at Julian. "Can we make one too?"

"Uhh--"

"Please, please?"

Julian shrugged his shoulders as she jumped with joy. Despite being the kid of two one of the gloomiest members of the Greyrats, Lara was the most cheerful of them. While the other were scary freaks that belied their age, she was equally talented whilst retaining her innocence and cheerfulness.

After that, the three of them each chose a lantern from a nearby vendor. Lara scribbled something on her lantern with the enthusiasm, her cheeks flushed with excitement. Xavier, always thoughtful, penned a more reserved wish.

Julian, surprisingly, though usually reserved, found himself writing down a wish with sincerity he hadn't known he possessed.

As the lanterns were released, the trio watched in silence as they joined the others on the water. The sight was both magical and serene, and Julian felt a profound sense of peace wash over him.

A fleeting moment. And mirroring the sailing lanterns, the peace that had come sailed away from him, replace by the same emptiness that he carried all the time on his heart, weighing down like a boulder on his shoulder.

They continued their journey through the city, visiting enchanting gardens and hidden courtyards. At each turn, Julian observed the delight in Lara's eyes and the quiet vigilance and satisfaction in Xavier's, looking over his little sister.

As the night deepened, they decided to conclude their adventure with a visit to a renowned restaurant.

His own.

The moment they entered, the aroma of freshly grilled meat and sweet confections enveloped them. Lara's eyes widened in delight, and she tugged at her father's sleeve. "Daddy, this place is heaven!"

"Because there are sweet things? No wonder you're gaining weight already."

"Oh, shut up! Don't spoil the fun."

The restaurant was adorned with crystal chandeliers that bathed the space in a soft, warm glow. The waitstaff, dressed in elegant medieval attire, greeted them with warm smiles. Julian, Xavier, and Lara settled into a cozy corner, and the menu was presented to them.

Once they were done, they called out for the waiter.

The waiter arrived. A man with a skeletal face as he brought his face closer to Xavier.

His heart almost jumped but he kept his face straight. "Excuse me?"

"Oh, Young Xavier! You certainly have grown quite a lot." The man commented.

Xavier looked over to Julian.

"Hm, oh yeah. This is Randolph. Randolph Marianne."

Xavier frowned. "Seventh Rank?"

"Yes."

"And you work here?"

"I am the cook here, but I have been punished."

"By whom?" Julian asked this time.

"I....uhhhhhh.... may accidently have added a bit more salt to the gravy. Lady Aisha took away my hat and told me to be a waiter for the whole day."

"Ah, Aisha. Well, nothing that I can do then." Julian raised his hands in a placating manner.

"Uncle Randy. Uncle Randy. Take our order."

Randolph gave an eerie smile, which was actually a sincere one.

"I want everything sweet on the menu!"

"Ah, so the usual."

"Yes!"

Xavier sighed and ordered something moderate, comprising of a few vegetables and tones of meat. Julian, however, didn't eat. He said his appetite wasn't there.

After they placed their order and completed their dinner, an array of desserts began to arrive.

The first to arrive was a rich chocolate fondue, with an assortment of dippable treats. Julian couldn't resist the temptation of dipping a plump strawberry into the velvety chocolate. He savored the combination of sweet and tart flavors.

"Xavier, look at Daddy enjoying the chocolate! I knew he had a sweet tooth hidden somewhere!"

Their next dessert was a tower of decadent cream puffs, each filled with a different flavor of cream.

They continued to sample the various desserts, sharing laughter and stories, creating memories. The siblings good-naturedly teased each other about their love for sweets.

As the night became murkier, Julian, Xavier, and Lara walked back to the house, their hearts lighter. They released the last of their worries into the night air, their wishes carried away like the lanterns on the canal.

"Why did you leave Luna and Elijah behind? She was crying!" Nanahoshi argued, keeping her volume moderate.

"They had class."

"That is not fine, Julian. They already think you are discriminating between them."

"I am not."

"They're seven, Julian. They can't think of it."

"Xavier could understand it."

"For heaven's sake, don't compare them. See? This is the problem. Should I also believe that you are discriminating?"

"You have the freedom to think what you want. I am not the one to restrict you in any way."

Nanahoshi sighed as she cupped her face into her palms, running her fingers into her hair as she let out a frustrated sigh. Sitting beside Julian, she leaned her head on his shoulder. "Sorry."

"It's ok."

"You look mad."

"I do?"

"Nay, just assuming. Would be natural if you're mad...I didn't mean to doubt you. It's just that they are young. The expectations of anyone who knows you are titanic. They're too young."

"They have to leave in 3 years. It's for the best."

"Why do they need to go? Can't you teach them at home?"

"I can't give real-life examples. I have my limitations."

"I see. Well, let's drop this topic." Nanahoshi changed the topic. "How was your day with Xavier and Lara?"

"It was fine." Julian replied as he felt Nanahoshi silently slip into his lap, swinging her arms around his neck.

(***)

Inside the castle of Asura Kingdom, a five-year-old girl groaned, ruffling her hair as she tried to complete the book in her hands. Her hair was wavy, just like Xavier's.

"I give up."

(***)

Four months later, Nanahoshi showed signs of pregnancy.

(***)

Three months after signs, Nanahoshi went into depression as she lost her child, due to a fatal disease. The Drain Syndrome.

The pre-formed fetus was removed with a surgery by Julian himself. After that, she fell into a coma.
